Repackageing bunk

People keep chattering about repackage your food. Bunk Why do the extra work. My pantry is a mid size cooler (no ice). I put all the food in there own contaier in the pantry. When I use an item I clean the container and put it back in the pantry. When I get home I pitch the emptys. I carry extra cooler container for left overs. Less work more fun.

That's where we get to the "to each his own" answer. I'm with you. Louise and I bring all our stuff in it's original packaging, but we have a cargo van and all the room we need for all our garbage.

BMOrg preaches the "de-packaging" stuff, and people swallow it. If everyone takes back everything they brought, no problem. I guess the fear is having a cardboard box from your TV dinner get loose and end up out on the playa somewhere for someone else to MOOP. And we all know there's tons of crap left out there every year.

I like to avoid taking things that are in glass because they tend to get broken somewhere along the line. I also like to freeze as much as possible too and pack it in a cooler with dry ice if only for the ride up. Things like eggs can be scrambled and placed in plastic tubs and frozen solid. Pickles can be put into plastic jars. Stuff that comes with a boatload of packaging can be repackaged in plastic tubs. For example, if you are taking 6 boxes of mac and cheese or roce-a-roni or something like that, take all the smaller packages out of the cardboard boxes and put them all in the plastic tubs. If there are multiple packets associated with the dish, tape them to keep them together. You might just slip the side panel directions in there too just to be sure.

Anyway, my goal is to minimize space and eliminate glass. The plastic tubs, when empty can be stacked inside each other to further conserve space on the trip home.

Why pack it in if you don't need it?

I think one of the cool things about suggesting de-packaging is that it makes people realize how much trash is generated just by food.

...Let's not forget the added incentive of getting to play astronaut! Being six years old when we landed on the moon has permanently imprinted the idea of astronauts being just about as cool as you can get....Every trip to the playa in my "road capsule" is secretly a moon mission, in what's left of my six-year-old's mind....All of THEIR food and toys were repackaged, and if it's good enough for THEM.....

....And, while I'm on the subject, it made my whole day that Discovery came back safely.
