BM TATTOO

Post by Bixby » Tue Aug 09, 2005 4:29 pm

Hey Burners..

This is going to be my second Burn, and I can hardly contain my excitement. I can't wait to see all of your beautiful faces.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS! I want to get a tattoo of the Man on my shoulder! I like those designs with the thick black lines. Would anyone be interested in submitting a cool original design? I want him to wrap around my shoulder and upper arm/bicep. Perhaps a little fire.. maybe not.

Or maybe you've just seen a cool design of the MAN somewhere that you can tell me about?

Let me know. Thanks. And remember: Live the Playa every day.

xoxox,
Bixby

for what's it worth,

step back from your design approach and let it simmer for a bit.
your tat's going to roll with you for a long time.

i've always thought a stylized version would be a good and personable approach at what your going for. that way, it would be unique and still hold a significant meaning of your personal experience.

(my friend got the "bud man" tattoo 20 years ago. took him about 6 to realize he had a marketing campaign on his back) note: bm and "beer tattoo" are not to be held in the same context here.

I saw a guy with this on the back of his neck one year. I was so jealous:

I might do this one somewhere.

At least not yet , there's no real way of knowing what will happen in the future.

I'm sure that when the band Minor Threat came up with the image on the left, they didn't envision nike using it as seen on the right:

Good point, Chai. But if it did change, for the rest of my life I could bitch about how "Burning Man was better last century."

Dallas, I really wanted the same design until I saw 5 (yes 5) different people with that very same tattoo last year. 3 men and 2 women in different locations on their bodies. I just got a beautiful BM design on my shoulder. I don't anticipate seeing it on anyone else. I'll be showing it off, so be sure to find me.

Notice how the symbol changed from each 'point' pointing west, to east.. (((or just reversing...)))

Hitler adopted any symbol, as a desparate measure of any small crap org group trying to adopt "wisdom".

Dude, Get your own tattoo. Why don't you draw one yourself???

I just like its simplicity. I have a very realistic view of Burning Man yet it did change my life so I can see it someday but there's no rush.

Where you gonna be? Or should I just ask around?

"Hey lady can I see your shoulder?"

"Fuck off pervert!"

Is there a "Where you gonna be?" thread yet?

I'll be at The Liver's End. Not quite sure where we will be; we wait for the Playa to provide and don't register (snarky discussion in another thread). We do, however, register at Playa Info at Center Camp when we find our spot. I'm planning to be at the Meet and Greet if I don't see you before then. Do you know where you will be?

Post by akridulce » Wed Aug 10, 2005 11:15 am

Hellooo!
I want to get a tattoo at burningman too!! (Not the man specifically.) So, I ask, are there any tattoo camps or tents or roaming tattoo artists on La Playa?

Hello wonderful tattoo/body artists ...?

Besos.

Hey there,
So, you want it to wrap around your shoulder and upper arm... are you thinking of an arm band? or a cap sleeve? this idea could make a really fucking wikid cap sleeve- though I always tend to go big and colorful with tattoos, like a crazy carnival scene in the foreground and have fire and the man in the back.
Do you want to use any color? Do you have any ideas about what you'd want to incorporate into the tattoo other than the man and the fire?
It's awesome that you are excited about getting a tattoo and you have a concept. But if you walked into a shop right now (and I mean a good shop, not just one that'd blast the man into your skin, no questions asked, just give em' your money and then get out) they'd need more information.
I worked as tattoo shop receptionist extraordinaire for a few years, and I have had several custom pieces done for me, so based on my experiences, here's what I'd do if I were you.
Collect different reference, start a little scrapbook if you want. Include different pictures of the man and anything else you might want to include, styles of tattoos you like, or even pictures of people and art from bman, these can be photos too, and that doesn't mean that you have to get something photo realistic tattooed on you, it's just reference, inspiration.
Start visiting shops in your area, good shops will be very clean, ask about their autoclave and whether or not they do spore tests on a regular basis (autoclave is used to sterilize needles, tubes and grips, and the spore tests ensure that that autoclave is actually working as it should). Check out artist portfolios and talk with different artists- find someone who's art you like, who you are able to get along with. Trust me, sitting the the chair of someone you don't get along with while they stick needles in you for a couple hours is not fun!
Once you find an artist you like, schedule an appointment for a consultation, and take all of your reference in with you, and discuss with the artist what you'd like to get done and get a design custom made for you. This will take a little extra time, but it's well worth it coz it'll be a one of a kind design that was made especially for you. Most shops will not charge you extra for custom work, and most artists prefer doing custom work as opposed to flash (the stuff hanging on shop walls or straight from tattoo magazines and books).
Do not let how much they say it's going to cost determine what your tattoo is going to look like... if you cannot afford what you are quoted for your dream design, wait until you can afford it to get tattooed coz once it's in there, it's in there and you have to absolutely love it!
Also, cheap ain't good and good ain't cheap. The best place to go is not usually the cheapest place.
You may want to consider bartering with your tattoo artist too, I know lots of guys that sometimes work on trades (one of my artists just did some tattoos in exchange for massages).
Well, what a mighty long post. If you want more info feel free to get in touch, or look for me on the playa- I'll be volunteering at the cafe throughout the week- smallish girl, large colorful tattoos, answers to the name Charity...

P.S. to the person wanting to get a tattoo ON the playa- BAD BAD IDEA! It'll be next to impossible to give your new artwork the loving care it needs to heal properly on the playa. Too much sun, heat, dust, dirt, grime, people who'll wanna touch it, etc. Please, please wait til after!

This came up a few months ago, and the consensus was that the playa is a horrible place to have that kind of open wound. Do a search on tattoo and see what was said.
