DRIVE SLOWLY while coming through the PL Rez communities
PLEASE drive the posted speed limits when coming through the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservations communities of Wadsworth and Nixon. Every year we see thousands of vehicles speeding through our little communities, quite a few even getting pulled over and getting speeding tickets. Please remember that even though your anticipating getting to BRC, or on your return ride home....your disrupting the normal day to day lives of the people on the reservation. Just trying to cross the hwy on foot, bike, or car would normally be a split second stop, and cross...when Burning Man participants are traveling through this can take upwards of 10 minutes.......Please remember you are guests passing through, if you go to swim at the lake, you do need a permit. I wish you all a safe and happy journey, thank you for letting me speak my mind. ps, don't forget to stop and eat an indian taco! 8)
PLEASE!!!!.....when driving through the communities Nixon and Wadsworth on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, OBEY THE SPEED LIMITS!.....TOOOOOOO many people speed through every year, we worry about the safety of our children.

While we're on the subject. Please be respectful and put on some clothes and act appropriately in the communities outside of Black Rock City. Seriously, I've seen some embarassing shit happen on the way home stopping for gas and supplies, it's not cute or funny it's lame. You probably wouldn't act that way in your hometown, so please don't act that way in their's.
And be aware that the speed limits change rapidly, and often without a lot of warning, sometimes going as low as 10 or 15 mph. I'm going to go one step further than Iso and say that 5mph under the posted speed limit is probably a good idea.
Passing cars on 447 should be done with the utmost caution. If there is a line of cars (more than say 2 or 3 cars together) then DON'T FUCKING PASS!! Arriving 15 minutes ahead of the SUV in front of you isn't worth your life, my life or anyone's life on that road.
For some reason this is a REAL fucking problem on the way home. Plan on giving yourself an extra day (at least) to get home. No matter when you leave you will probably encounter some degree of traffic on the way home. Again, DO NOT PASS! Just take your lumps behind the big ass RV, put on some chill music and relax.
This issue is one I'm particularly sensitive to as I had a friend end up in the hospital for 6 months one year driving home from the event as the result of someone making a seriously unsafe lane change while passing on 447. I don't want the same thing or worse to happen to anyone else here.

Chai's post touches on a major hot button thing for me. Idiots that pass going up hills. I usually go in and out of Gerlach on Jungo Rd. but I've taken 447 to Reno and SF a couple of times now. And I've had several very close calls including getting passed by a bus going up hill of all things....that was one of the scariest driving experiences I've had. He tried to pass 5 cars in one shot...and he almost killed us all. He met a car head on that took the soft shoulder but managed to keep control...it could have been a total disaster.
Even with heavy traffic it's been a 2 hour drive from Empire to Wadsworth and I-80 at the most. I understand the urge to pass that lumbering overloaded bus or RV ahead but don't take me out with you. Pop in a CD, relax, look around and see why 447 around Pyramid Lake is a National Scenic Byway. I don't want to go home in a body bag because you were in a hurry. Save that lead foot urge for I-80. It was built for speed, 447 is not.

Here Here! Also, open grazing means cows wander all around the place in the open, get it. In 2001 I watched in my rear view mirror the horror of a steer getting hit by a motor home. None of the jack asses in the line of cars slowed down before this happened, even though the herd of cows was kinda freaking out and running along side the road and then one crossed onto the highway and P O W! The front of the motorhome vaporized on contact. The steer flew into the air, legs straight up and shit. It was awful. Completely awful.
And another thing: STOP INTENTIONALLY AND UNINTENTIONALLY DROPPING YOUR GAWDDAMNED TRASH ALL OVER THE ROAD FROM EMPIRE ON SOUTH. Such a slap in the face to the native people who live there.

Not only do you wreck your vehicle by hitting a half ton steer, those are worth $500 to their owners. Think of your bills for both...
(and yes, I am the one who made a joke about hitting one to get steak. It was a joke. It may not have been funny, but it was a joke. We have a hitting a wild boar story in the family. It's no joke.)

That also means don't pile your trash in the trash bins at the rest areas along I-80. The first one West of Wadsworth always looks like a warzone when I pass it after the event.cornelius wrote:And another thing: STOP INTENTIONALLY AND UNINTENTIONALLY DROPPING YOUR GAWDDAMNED TRASH ALL OVER THE ROAD FROM EMPIRE ON SOUTH.
