Okay, I was lucky enough to score ~20 sample tubes of lip balm at an event I volenteered at earlier this summer and was planning to pass them on on playa. NOT as publicity but as "hey, cool score, people are gonna need this." Maybe I should wrap them in duct tape first? The Main Site wrote:Rental Trucks & Corporate Logos
Corporate advertising is not allowed at Burning Man. Participants with rental trucks are enthusiastically encouraged to cover or decorate prominent logos. The display or distribution of corporate banners, corporate logos, giveaway items, samples, and other such paraphernalia is strictly prohibited.

I have bought these at the dollar store in 6 packs and handed them out without worrying about the logo (of course, it was probably some obscure company from Georgia, and not the one down south!). Several years ago a friend covered up hers with some cloth that was cleverly tied to look like a cute little penis (think cabbage patch dolls). She called them "chap dicks" and gave them away like crazy. YMMV.

Everybody knows you're supposed to grind off all logos with a bench grinder. I can see it now, like those legendary Ranger v. Mutant Vehicle chases where the Rangers have numbers and radios and the MVs go too fast, only it will be the tattoo'd man followed by the DPW anti-logo squad and their sand blaster...dragonfly Jafe wrote:Wow! THE radest gift I got last year was a bic lighter with a clipped out porn scene, clear taped to the lighter. "College Co-ed Cocksuckers". Cheap, easy, funny as HELL. And sort of seeeeexxxy. I'd catch myself lookin' at the lighter and getting a funny feeling down there and lookin' at the lighter and...

Thanks everyone for your replies. I don't know how I'm gonna solve this, but you make it look like there's a lovely elegant solution!

Re: Ethics
Isn’t Burning Man a corporation? How far do you have to cover or remove every aspect of something being made? I mean does an Artist have to remove her or his name for items made and then given away? Is an Artist required to remove a internet address from a gift item? I can understand if Big Corporations are not allowed to advertise or give away stuff, but does this mean that even Artists or People are not allowed to exchange if gifts with their name or copyright notice or a web address?theCryptofishist wrote:Okay, I was lucky enough to score ~20 sample tubes of lip balm at an event I volunteered at earlier this summer and was planning to pass them on on playa. How ethical is it to not follow your own rules about corporate logos? How ethical is it to deny small Artists or Crafts Persons recognition of their efforts?
Where does all this really end or begin? The displays of CostCo Soul Trading, and of Vampire Fetishes and Techno Music Industry seems to be acceptable to the overall Event, so would the display of a Christian cross be acceptable or would that be considered Big Corporate? Would the display of a Buddha, or some Artistic Ideas be considered Big ART Corporations or Religions?
Will anyone be considered bad, and then insulted, tortured, humiliated, or burned alive for not meeting the loose rules of Corporate displays, or for even displaying the Burning Man Corporate Logo? I mean like I am just curious, so I can get my camera ready, prepare my glorious/tacky costume, and make sure I get a good location to participate/observe.
Will there come a time when there will be a brand new, Expression Event Revolution, that is opposite, and which spurns the rules and ideology of Burning Man? Perhaps, a futuristic event called the Bizarre Water Man?
Can't we all be evil, good, and mediocre and live together in perfect confusion and abnormal drama? I mean can't we just all be enlightened/confused together, and burn/consume in harmony, and participate/observe the splendor/scary liberation/hypocrisy?

As with many things this appears to be a judgement call. But it's a damn good question...as I'm writing this I'm thinking of a prominent logo: Lanceland...we power the playa. It sure wasn't covered up.
I read that part about logos and the like very carefully my first year out there and I wondered how far to take it. Do I cover up the Nike swooshes on my shoes? Do I cover up the Camelbak logo? Do I polish off the logos on my goggles? I ended up not doing any of that. But I can see covering the logos for Cruise America, the Ryder logo, or other large sized logos like that. I've seen the coverups become damn good art in it's own right.
There's no way to escape the logos completely. But you can mute the loudness of them...and that's what I use to draw my line on what's acceptable. My Nike swooshes get covered with playa dust soon enough. My goggles...when I'm using them nobody gives a damn what I'm wearing as they are focused on self-preservation anyway. But if I drove a Ryder truck I'd cover the logo. Others may see it quite differently but that's my take on it.
It's also about common sense...who is going to spend hours upon hours polishing off or painting over logos on everything? And on some things I want that info. Like the Steamworks CD I have and love...and some other art works that I got the artist's card with. I have no problem with that. I love their work. I'm supporting a fellow burner. The key again is keep it discreet. (Choppy post, sorry)

Anything purple is mine. Anything else can be dyed or painted.
