Last place to get gas? Name of unattended station last year?

Post by HughMungus » Fri Aug 12, 2005 3:12 pm

Last year while driving in we happened upon a very small gas station in either Gerlach or Empire and were able to use our credit card to fill the tanks even though no one was there. Was this in Gerlach, Empire, or somewhere else? Other than that, where's the last place to get gas before the Playa and how late is it open? What's the next previous place before that?

Last place is definately Bruno's in Gerlach. Don't know of its openness. I'm thinking I've seen pumps in Empire, but I could be misremembering. There's that place in the fork of the two roads to Reno.
And then of course right off Highway 80 there's the Pilot and then the place in Wadworth. Try to have enough gas when you leave the playa to not have to buy until you hit 80. Saves you time and agrravation.

That last line is why I fuel up at the Mirastar in Winnemucca and haul the extra fuel with the weight penalty over Jungo Road. I got so frustrated waiting on everyone at the gas stations in Empire and Gerlach to say never, ever again. I won't do it.

And when I say Bruno's is the last place to get gas before BRC, I'm not talking about eating at the restaurant, although that is accurate too.

I like to top off in Wadsworth right off 80. As the Gerlach/Empire stations can be nightmares (especially after the event!). These are not massive truck stops, they are small 2 or 4 pump stations and some are on the opposite side of the road.

My recollection is that the gast station in Empire takes only cash. I've paid with a credit card at Bruno's, but I can't recall whether I paid at the pump.

Louise and I always stop in Empire on our way to the burn and give out buttons and such while we're in line for gas -- we want a full tank heading back without having to stop for it after we leave the playa. It's a great opportunity to get in the mood with a bunch of wonderful Burners who are all still friendly and energetic.

Well, the concern is more about having enough gas to power the generator for 6 days or so. Anyone know Onan generator fuel consumption rates?

If you check the company's website they should list the fuel consumption rates for your make/model genny. Remember those rates, like the rates for your car's gas mileage are done under optimum conditions, so factor in more to be safe.

On the OTHER hand Bill's Texaco station is now a Gulf station. The pumps now take cards and diesel is available. That's not to say that he won't cut power to the pumps after he shuts down. The traffic going to BRC dwindles his supply pretty rapidly and I think he makes an effort to have some reserve for the folks living in Gerlach.

A bit Off Topic, but for folks who don't normally drive large RVs:

If you're fueling diesel at a truckstop on the Big Truck side, do remember this piece of fuel island etiquette: If you need to go inside the truckstop after you fuel, pull forward enough so that a semi can get in and fuel while you run in. Note: do not pull forward and saunter in, eat, check out the sunglasses and take a dump. This has spawned urban legends about enraged drivers shooting the offenders. If you need time to get the entire crew fueled and squatted also, please take the time the park over in a truck slot.
