when is the best day to arrive???
hi guys and girls! i have never been to this amazing experience, and i am coming this year for the first time with three friends. (we are all musicians...)
here is my question: we are not going to be able to stay for the entire week, since we have to be back in NY, so is it worth it for us to come for the first 3 or 4 days and then leave before the final weekend? or will we be losing out on the entire experience and therefore be better off coming a different year....
obviously i hope you guys tell me that the first 3 or 4 days totally rock also, but i know i will receive the truth here!!!!!!!!

I came close to making this decision myself this year. If I had to do it I would go Wed-Sat and that includes staying for the burn Saturday night. Mon and Tue are fun but filled with a lot of setup...

cool.... so it seems we are not making a mistake by getting there early, even if we have to leave early!
next question, and then i promise to leave you guys alone: if we are not in a camp, and we have an RV, do they give us a place to park it that is not too far away from most of the action???
in other words, since we are not in a "camp", do we have to park miles away from all the fun?

Park in any open spot that is not reserved for theme camping. But do kinda get to know your neighbors and make sure that you're not parking in the middle of thier camp. Take a look at the map off the main site to get an idea of where the reserved spots are and where the action might be. But this is definately a time to be open to currents and possiblities rather than getting hung up on trying to find the perfect spot...

if you do end up coming on monday or tuesday you'll have a much easier time finding a good spot for your RV. it can get pretty crowded, well.. it WILL get really crowded by thurs/fritruthfreesyou wrote:cool.... so it seems we are not making a mistake by getting there early, even if we have to leave early!

Wednesday arrivals are not too bad for finding a camp space a bit closer to the Esplanade. On Thursday....bring your shoehorn cause it's going to be a very tight fit.

That sucker part was "kind of" a cheap shot...as I know quite a few people that come in for only 4 days. 4 days beats not going at all and many of those people volunteer and bust their ass during those 4 days. Stealing Unjun's tagline, some days are better than none. If 4 days is all I can get and I contribute art or volunteer does that mean I'm a sucker? I don't think so.stuart wrote:so trueMon and Tue are fun but filled with a lot of setup...
better to let the suckers do that work so you can roll in fresh and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
yup, this is why I like it earlier in the week

if you've never been before, and you can only come for a few days, you'll have a totally different experience early in the week versus late.
early in the week, almost everyone on the playa is there because they are DOING something - making a contribution of some kind: building an artwork, creating a theme camp, doing performance, etc.
it is a community of artists (or at least artists-for-the-week) who are doing what they do to give a gift to each other -- as well as to have a great freaking time.
everyone has a very open, generous spirit. and as soon as they're done building or installing, they're ready to party HARD!
now, by the end of the week, two things happen.
first, there are TONS of new people who arrive, many of whom aren't making ANY contribution except to get wasted, put on a costume, and go dancing -- or even worse, to get wasted and just go LOOK at people dancing in costumes. you do not want to be one of these people. they don't have as much fun.
second - and this is kind of key - the nice, friendly, great people from the beginning of the week have gotten a little burnt out. they're still wonderful - but they're not as open and approachable and mellow as they were at the beginning of the week. time and stress are taking their toll. and with all these newly arrived yahoos wandering about, they can even start to get a little grumpy.
yes, there are more people, and there's more noise, and more fire, and more blinking lights at the end of the week. but there is PLENTY of that at the beginning, too... and the vibe is SO much better -- kinder, more creative, much more intensely special.
finally, yes, you'll be missing the burn.
but if you come for the first 3 days? you're going to come back the next year, for sure.
so you'll see it then!
