Bonneville Salt Flats, just east of Wendover. The rest area right before that has elevated viewing platforms.

The Wendover Airport has a small museum, WWII buffs should make a point of a small detour to see it. Creepy diorama of the Engola Gay being loaded up for that infamous run to Nagasaki. There's a monument to B-52s outside the visitor center in town.

Thanks! I even found a Spider-Man doll at Bonneville, last year. He's being morphed into "Playaman".

-Forgot to resurrect my I-80 Poetry:

MICHIGAN

Sadly, every road
but Jungo, perhaps, will be
much nicer than ours.

INDIANA

Indiana's job-
selling illegal fireworks
to "Michiganders".

ILLINOIS

Big Shoulders- Hog Butcher-
You are SO CLOSE, Chicago,
that I want to stop.

IOWA

Rolling, rolling road
corn and corn and corn and corn
65 WHY, now?

NEBRASKA

Adventure must lie
West of Kearney because there
are TWO Cabela's.

WYOMING

Yippy Tay Yi Yay
I feel like a cowboy here,
which is pretty strange.

UTAH

A tennis ball tree?
Growing on the salt lake's shore?
What the hell IS that?

NEVADA
Just down the road from
Wile E. Coyote's home town-
Goddamn, it's dark here!

I would hardly describe that as the salt lake's "Shore".

I've seen that "tree" / communications tower once. It makes me glad I usually come across the flats at night.

Another quirk...last year a group of us were heading West towards Wendover when we saw a flashing red light far ahead. Thinking it's a cop we all slowed down and for 30 miles we rolled along at the speed limit or slightly below it. When we finally get to East Wendover and the port of entry we look over....and it's a red flasher on top of a gas station. Talk about being fooled, we thought it was a cop all that time!

The shore of Lake Bonneville maybe, but not GSL. I-80 is probably the world's most boring cross-country route. Take I-40 if you can. Much more exciting ... though I realize many are tight on time.
