putting something in the open playa?
Who do I talk to about the possibility of putting a structure in the open playa?

ok how about more specific questions:
What do I need to do to put something on the open playa?
Is is too late to do this?
Who specifically do i contact about this?
Does the Artery have an email addy?
EDIT: sorry, wasn't trying to be rude, but that didn't tell me much...
Basically I have created and shrine for a past friend, someone who was well known to a great many burners, and I'm playing with the idea of placing it in the playa. Otherwise it'll end up in open camping or in our theme camp. I think the open playa is the best idea, theme camp pulling a close second but might be some political issues leaving open camping at the final option. I'd rather not take up camp space for a structure that won't be lived in and won't have any ONE person near it regularly...

Make DAMN SURE that you can secure your shrine against wind, souvenier hunters and wayward mutant vehicles.....And that it's properly lit during the dark hours, which is more of a challenge than it may seem since there aren't that many truly self-contained options for illumination. Better be prepared to check on it EVERY NIGHT, and swap batteries, unless you use solars, in which case you'll STILL need to check nightly, since they dust over and won't charge. Maybe setting your shrine up on a street edge is a better idea after all, unless you have time to address these problems.

The open playa is open. Feel free to place your structure anywhere that isn't already marked (they tack CDs to the ground for placed art). Keep a good distance from any placed art that isn't in place yet (because you don't know how big it will be). Obviously you want to do the things Robotland suggests above since you don't want it destroyed. Don't feel you have to register your art. It is not necessary. It is nice for historical purposes, but not necessary.

... And light it up or at least the peremiter so what Robotland suggests doesn't happen at night. Cheap solar powered landscaping or malibu lights work great and don't need to be maintained. Available at garden stores.

I"ve got 8 solar spot lights, plan to place 6 and have 2 backups. I'd be making at least 2 trips a day (sunrise and sunset) to clean and turn the inside lights on and stuff.
Had thought about souvenier hunters tho. YOu really think someone would jack something off a memorial altar? I mean its gonna be pretty obvious what its about...
Maybe I should just place it right out side the theme camp, like across the street.

Assemble 100 people, and at least a couple of them'll be assholes....Burning Man gets 35 THOUSAND. People will be more likely to "liberate" items from your display out in the Big Wide Open, and solar lights are a commodity in BRC. Ever see someone chase a glowstick on the Esplanade?Elemental666 wrote:IHad thought about souvenier hunters tho. YOu really think someone would jack something off a memorial altar? Sucks to have to be pessimistic....I'm not saying anything WILL happen, but it'd suck to have your nice tribute fucked with. If it's your desire to put it in the deep playa, which DOES seem artistically appropriate, I'd say just be prepared for the possibility of vandalism. Sounds like you've got it well and conscienciously covered as far as safety's concerned.

I'm with Robotland on this one. One year there were several pleas in the JRS after the Burn with artists begging for the return of very expensive pieces of their art projects. I'll be a little more charitable and include the impaired along with the outright thieves; people who are attracted to blinky things and just walk off with them, having no clue the next day what happened.

All very good points. I'm glad I asked this. I think for the sake of my own personal sanity as well as the well being of my piece I'll pitch it some where closer to my camp so I can keep closer tabs on it.
Thank you all for your contributions, see you soon!
