BM 2005 - thunderstorms??
BM 2005 - thunderstorms??
been seeing online about weather at BRC could be hit with some
thunderstorms this week?
Ok.. this would be another added caution for us all this year.
New Moon the night of the burn - will be pitch black..but gratefully
things will be all lit up more so that evening with LOTS of fire.
so when it rains, thunders out on the playa what are the best
precautions to take?

2. IF OUTDOORS...Avoid water. Avoid the high ground. Avoid open spaces. Avoid all metal objects including electric wires, fences, machinery, motors, power tools, etc. Unsafe places include underneath canopies, small picnic or rain shelters, or near trees. Where possible, find shelter in a substantial building or in a fully enclosed metal vehicle such as a car, truck or a van with the windows completely shut. If lightning is striking nearby when you are outside, you should:
A. Crouch down. Put feet together. Place hands over ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder.
B. Avoid proximity (minimum of 15 ft.) to other people.

Definitely, repeat definitely, Do Not stand under a TREE if you are caught in a thunderstorm at Burningman. Definitely.
If it rains, come out and play with the rest of us. If it thunders, who really cares. If it lightnings, see that link posted. If you're near your car and it starts lightning, being in your car is a good thing. Out on the playa, duck and cover as described.so when it rains, thunders out on the playa what are the best
precautions to take?
My immediate thought was, "Huh? What trees?" But then I remembered the various palm and pine trees I've seen in past years and remembered you could encounter just about anything on the playa!Cabanasprings wrote:dinosaurwilly wrote:2. Then there's the news article, "New light on the human torch mystery," atINJURED PERSONS do not carry an electrical charge and can be handled safely.

But only at Burning Man, I presume. The wick effect means that a person could burn slowly without attracting attention from passers-by.
The weather in BRC is random and cannot be predicted by looking at weather reports from websites. The nearest reporting station to BRC is Lovelock, which is not very accurate. Hell, it could be bone dry and hot in Gerlach and you could be in the middle of a monsoon in BRC. Then it could be bone dry and hot again 10 minutes later. You just dont know.
There is no obvious logic to the way the weather behaves on the playa. Bottom Line: Be prepared for anything, keep your tent zipped up and staked down good and enjoy whatever Mother Nature may or may not present you with.
