Can I bring a 5 gallon Jug of water on an airplane?|
First time- i will be flying from israel to make this burn happen. I have no idea what campsite or even how to get from the reno airport to the burn but My only question is- since I am flying in I want to bring a 5gallon jug of water with me. (Living in israel i know how tough security can be!!!) Am i able to bring a 5 gallon jug of water with me on an american airlines flight? Who knows if they will think it is lighter fluid or what?! I am not really sure what my other options are..
thanks
Amir
Buy the jug at a camping or hardware store in Reno, fill it there.
You can buy 4 liter jugs of water at the grocery stores for less than $2. Sometimes a lot less.
Any thing you need you can buy in Reno.
But i dont' want to have to rely on someone to take me to the grocery store. I was looking at just getting a ride from the reno airport to the playa. Am i leaving too much up to chance by being that "idiot" who did not bring any water??

You're relying on someone to take you to BRC, no? Just ask if you can stop at a supermarket on the way. They probably had plans to do that anyway.sabeech wrote:But i dont' want to have to rely on someone to take me to the grocery store. Even if the airline doesn't object to the water jug, do you seriously want to schlepp an extra 40-lb piece of luggage everywhere? Also, if you give it to the baggage handlers to transport, it's chance of arriving intact is about nil. It would make more sense to take an empty jug with you and fill it from a fountain at the Reno airport, but it makes even more sense just to stop at a supermarket on the way out of town.
BTW, as someone else mentioned, 5 gallons is not enough for a week.

airport
on that page (repeat the search till you run out of references) -- there are quite a few shopping centers, supermarkets, and other stores that sell water near the airport.
If you have your ride already lined up, alert them that you'll need to stop and buy water near the airport if that's a convenient stop for them. Your ride may have other suggestions on water and such. If you don't have a ride yet, I expect people who pick you up to be reasonable in letting you stop for water. Let people know before they commit to taking you what delays you may cause in getting your final purchases. Many burners will be happy to make reasonable accomodations on time allowed for shopping. Some will not be.
Be aware that BMOrg expects everyone to have 1.5 gallons of water per day per person. You will be asked at the gate before you get in how much water you have. Either have sufficient water or be prepared to lie as to the correct amount. See
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/e ... iance.html
for "What You Must Bring." As you may know, 1.5 gallons a day is a minimum amount and includes _all_ water use: drinking, cooking, bathing, everything.
Five gallon jugs are large and heavy. You may not meet airline requirements for in-cabin storage. It must fit under the seat. Aircrews will not allow an object that heavy in overhead storage. If you know what airline or airlines you are using in the US, drop by
http://www.cieux.com/onlineAirline.html
and see if the airline is listed. You may find links to their Web page on carry on requirements and limitations.
Louise and I are giving away playa clothes at 2:00 pm on Wednesday through Saturday. If you need some playa fashions, stop by. We're in Hushville, 4:30 and Ego, The Civilized Explorer. We should have a sign on 4:30, so look for us.
Welcome to Burning Man, Amir.

It's good of you to be concerned about asking your ride for too much, but asking to stop at a grocery store or *Mart is really not a problem. There's several places right off the freeway. There's a very good chance they'll need to do the same. Don't you need food as well?
You only get so much luggage room on international flights. Use it for clothes and gear.
