I'm tempted to take you up on that. I ended up spending most of my day out there on the Marin headlands, on the GGB and in Sausalito with a short drive into the city itself. Without the GPS and the real time maps I'd have been lost.
I have an idea as to where The Empress and Tiara / R-Pod live but beyond that If I get off I-80 or 101 I am totally lost out there. I did follow the signs and found my way close to the tourist stuff like Fisherman's Wharf, Pac Bell and other places but I played hell getting back on 80 to cross the bridge. When I went to Chicago for my first time I paid a cab driver $50 and said show me the basics of how you get around this place. 45 minutes later I knew and have never been lost inside the city since. I need to do something similar with SF.

No, you can't walk a mile in my shoes...
I like SF by foot or the variety of public transit. You see more of the city on foot than any other way.

So in all seriousness, scrap the rental car idea and use transit.....
I've looked at some websites that were recommended and am trying to plan a way to get up to the GGB so I can rent a bike and go explore the Marin Headlands again. I want to check out the lighthouse that was closed when I was there last month and get a few more pix of the Nike missile base and other stuff up there.
I thought the buses had bike racks, in a way I'm tempted to box my bike up and bring it along. Those hills though are killers in a pickup, on a bike...I'm like I don't think so!
The whole thing comes down to cost as it so often does. It costs so much to stay out there, even overnight that it's going to take me a bit to get enough extra money to do it. I'm worried it will be early November and I'm haven't checked into what the weather is like around then. If anyone can offer some feedback on this I'd appreciate it, a lot!

Hubby and I had no troubles getting around sf on our visits there. Bussing, BART'ng and just wandering around. They sell day and weekly bus passes (that made it easier getting around and not always having correct change on us)
If you do happen to visit SF, besure to visit the Magnolia Pub on Haight its got the RebA! & Hubby Seal of Approval.

Why I think it is!
I've gotta be careful here. One of my friends still reads the 3Playa and she noted that Badger has commented about my friendly posts to you. It seems to have drove him into some kinda snit..which is nothing unusual but still. I don't want to see Miss Iso get upset, it messes up her makeup.
Anyway I'll see what other good stuff is hidden around here..back to looking again.
