The El Dorado is indeed, bitchin'. The dessert selection is superior, great cheesecake. I had to laugh at the freshly scrubbed couple at the table next to us who brought their water bottles.

When we're on the truck, larry often parks at Boomtown, the truckstop side of it. They have a free shuttle into Reno, when we were stuck for larry's 34 hour reset, we went to the El Dorado's Sunday champagne brunch. AUrrrummmgh, drool. Strawberries and champagne, good stuff too, not some cheap swill. So drive up to Verdi, park your trailer (fairly good truckstop security), take a trucker shower (not in the main casino, to the west of the RV park) and ride the shuttle into town for eats.

There's also a little hole-in-the wall Chinese place with six tables that has yummy honey-walnut shrimp, but I can't recall the name.

please NOT at my favorite sushi place. Eat at one of those other crappy sushi places with "pier" or "aloha" in the title. YECH! Too much rice and the fish tastes rubbery and not fresh. And the rolls...don't get me started...they all taste the same, like that mayonaise creamcheese flavor.

Hey, I got an idea for you. I did this in 2001, stop in Nixon and eat Indian tacos (native) or Indian food (India) in Reno. There's a great place on s.virginia called India Garden...mmm yum.

AntiM, the original Boomtown was founded by a trucker if I recall the stories right. Do they still give the truckers any preferential treatment like they used to do? Or has it all changed?

And from the looks of this thread perhaps it would be a good idea to skip Jungo Road and head to Reno before driving back home.

Boomtown actually has a really good Sonoran style Mexican restaurant in it. We usually stop there. Nothing like gooey enchiladas and refried beans to make me happy on the way home.

The frightening thing is this huge casino restaurant tastes more like the Mexican food I grew up with in southern Arizona than anything I can get in SF.

No, truckers don't really get much anymore at Boomtown. The courtesy shuttle is about it, and the TV lounge is pretty nice. A CDL will still get you discounts, especially on rooms. Now Wendover still caters to truckers, two for one buffet deals, free rolls of nickels; one casino has given away FOUR Peterbilts this summer alone. The brothels love truckers, park there and you get free coffee, free food, free showers, and wake up knocks on your truck door.

I landed a rockin' deal on a room at the Atlantis last year (I want to say $30, tax included - something ludicrously cheap like that, though) on Hotwire before I left; ate in the buffet after I checked in and showered, had breakfast in the coffee shop the next morning (it's called the Purple Parrot - how could I not?), and came out ahead on the slots.

I'm getting a ride from someone else this year, so no hotel for me. I'll miss it.

The Dennys off of McCarran East. The place has more awards for cleanliness, quality service, being the best Dennys, etc. than any place
I have eaten in a long time. Now, obviously, I am thinking budget. If you're up for dumping $20 or more per person and eat alot, obviously
go for one of the buffets. I prefer the Eldorado. I would tell you my personal secret spot, but then it would not be a secret would it? Email me and I may give the location of the secret rebel base...Er,..I mean restaurant, to you!

hell yeah... +1 on the eldorado in reno and its lucious buffet. this is now a post-burn tradition for me. a king sized bed, a nice shower, dr. mario on the video game menu, and a large buffet, all for about $50. i wouldn't do it any other way. there are usually plenty of burners there and nobody seems to mind.

note: there is a dinner buffet and a breakfast buffet. i go pretty minimal on food quality out on the playa, so a couple of monstrous meals back to back after the event is worth every penny to me.

if the jacuzzi room wasn't already sold out, i might have even gone that route.

My favorite place is the Subway in the Flamingo. Its fun to walk through a casino and realize just how incredibly filthy you really are.

Actually my favorite trip was staying at Circus Circus and eating at the steakhouse there. Checked in to the hotel, took two showers, unpacked the clean clothes and hit the steakhouse. Steak never tasted so good.

My persoanl favorite is the Pnuematic Diner. It's located on the top floor of the Truckee River Lodge at 501 w 1st st. In reality, it's nothing more than a room at the lodge that has been allowed to operate as a diner, so space inside is sort of limited. I wouldn't suggest taking a large group there, but small groups of 5-10 should work out OK.

The staff is very burner friendly, many of them being burners themselves. In fact if memory serves me right, I seem to remember the diner being closed during BM in the past...

I highly reccomend the grilled slab tacos. I'm not the world's biggest tofu fan, but DAMN those things are good, especially with an ice cold beer!

Yes the Pneumatic Diner is a great place to eat. Very tight space though.
The whole place is maybe 40'x40' if that big (Small?) It's max seating is about 20. The food is really great though!!

Yup, the PD the place to get awesome veg*n fare on the way home - 11am to 11pm. We ate at Port o' Subs every year until someone clued us in, and now it's falafel sandwiches and choco soy shakes all the way.

The Atlantis resort has an all you can eat sushi bar for $19, I think it is 24hr. You can park on the right hand parking lot opposite the hotel and catch the escalator up to the bar, easy in out access. Great food, air con.

I like Mels Diner in The Sands. They have good service, good food, and a lot of cool pics on the wall. My personal fave is one of WolfMan Jack from back in the day.

Mel's is one of the things I miss about not living in SF anymore...the food inevitably rocks, and the decor is a hoot and a half.

For a nice graceful return to the default world.

It's full of burners, the floor is covered with playa dust, and you can wear your sarong, utilikilt or whatever and not get a second look from anyone.

They still expect you to pay, but will walk you through the process if you're rusty.

The food is so-so, but i guarantee your strawberry shake will taste like heaven.

Yep. We paid $29.99 a night for a massive (non-smoking) room with a king-size bed and lots and lots of open floor space, but I talked with a couple other burners who had just checked in on Tuesday (after the burn) and they were paying $20. We had the best ever time there. I highly doubt that this is the place supposedly being turned into condos. It has noticeably just been remodeled and is of top quality everywhere (except for the public restrooms on the 2nd floor). The food was exceptional, the staff in all departments friendly and helpful to the extreme. This is definitely the hotel/casino which had a package for us last year. I emailed Actiongrl for confirmation of the fact before our reservations were made in July.
I will DEFINITELY be booking rooms before and after next years burn at the Golden Phoenix. It was great watching for all the playa covered footwear going on and off the elevators and all around the casino / hotel and knowing I was in such fantastic company. Lots of friendly smiling faces to greet and meet.

We stopped at (of all places) Bruno's for lunch on the way out. Yeah, *that* Bruno's. Expected to get a ptomaine special. Instead, what we got was remarkably good, extra huge (my club sandwich was as thick as a phone book) and very fresh. I do't know if they do that so idiots, er, people talk good about them to drum business for next year, but everyone around us had the same kind of portions and all looked good.

I can honestly say I've eaten a lot worse both in the Bay Area AND Reno. I think next year we may do it again - after all, what's Nevada without the chance to gamble so close to BRC?? >>giggles<<

Yeah, the food at Bruno's rocks. Portions, prices, the whole schmear. But I generally eat there either on my way in or some time during the week (I generally get off-playa at least once during the event). I think I mentally classify stopping at Bruno's as I leave along with trying to get gas in Gerlach post-event - more likely to cause a backup than anything else.
