Brief announcement:

Just wanted to let everyone know that I think art cars still suck, even if Burning Man now insists we call them "Mutant Vehicles" (which I notice isn't really catching on, so it might be time to think of a new name).

Thanks, and be safe out there!

The day that Mutant Vehicles are outlawed, only outlaws will be mutant.. er, I mean only mutants will have laws, no I think I meant to say, only virgin alien art will be allowed to drive . . . ?
.....(Sorry, I'm practicing for an art council position)

I like the big, slow, lumbering art cars (isn't David Best's project this year basically a huge-ass art car?), but the gas-powered scooters and glorified golf carts are often lame, especially of the "art" on them appears to be simply a token gesture of work required to get the lazy-ass "artist's" vehicle on the playa. Was half-tempted to bring my old Battlebot this year to patrol our perimeter and chase those people down. (18 mph, will pull my jeep, but if it goes astray it will dismember people, so I nixed the idea)

I have a hunch that those people are more the problematic ones overall anyway. If you spent thousands of dollars and countless hours building your land zeppelin and hauling it to the playa, you're probably going to respect IT enough to drive it carefully.

OTOH, I was almost run over by the viking boat last year, which blew past me on my bike toward a dust-devil while I was riding as fast as I could go. So, it was probably doing 20 mph minimum. It let me know it was coming by breathing fire toward me. That was comforting. Perhaps the BLM needs to apply .08 rules and DUII the dumbasses that break the speed limit while they're intoxicated.

BTW, saw the Landspeeder from last year for sale on Ebay awhile back.

Last year the rangers did call BLM to have somebody arrested for drunk driving an art car. I know of this one case because I was camping with the ranger who was involved in the chase across the playa. There may have been other incidents. You should report problems to rangers and let them handle it.

Block Rock Rangers need to know this stuff. When you get home make sure to write to the Burning Man MV dept. I did this one year and the next year the thing wasn't there. I must have been the last straw.

High speed? I thought BRC pursuits were kinda keystone kops because the persuers stay to 5mph and the perused goes way above. Of course, you do get the occasional poetic justice when some trouble maker wipes himself out on a lamplighter pole and is taken off the playa on a helicopter....

So the option, then is that we empower the Rangers to start POLICING the art cars to make sure they have the proper registration?

Do you really want to see Rangers in jeeps barreling down the playa in hot pursuit of some dumb ass on a pocket bike?

The mantra you need to remember is this:
The Rangers are not cops.
The Rangers are not cops.
The Rangers are not cops.

The gate does a pretty good job of picking out the non-registered vehicles and impounding them before they make it into the city, however some still get through.

If you really dont like seeing vehicles that obviously have no place driving around the city, stop them yourself and detain them long enough for a Ranger to get a hold of a LEO and do something about it.

Maybe you could build an entire camp around the idea of enforcing the driving policy. You could have everyone dress up like the highway patrol, name everyone either Ponch or John and spend the week chasing down the bad guys.

Hoo boy, what fun that would be!
