Was the man smaller this year?

Post by respecttheplanet » Tue Sep 06, 2005 10:45 am

The Man was actually difficult to see from the road and didn't seem to have any neon on it like it did in years past.

Why the change? Any particular reason for it or were they just trying out different things?

(I really am just curious. That's all.)

It happens sometimes. Don't worry about it.

What just happens? The Man varies in size from year to year? If you actually know, great, then answer the question.

Perhaps some curious burners would like to know too.

It sure looked that way.

I don't know for sure, but I believe the man was smaller. Our group had made several comments on that. The maze he was on was pretty large, so they may have had to make the man smaller.

I'd say the man was smaller, but better! The maze under him was an awesome experience. He was lit with neon at night... so perhaps you were looking at something else.

Neon

P.S. does anyone know how to edit your name on this thing?

The man was multi-colored and the neon work was more elaborate than last year. By most accounts of those with whom I spoke, this was the best Burn in several years.

The temple disappointed me initially but the burn was spectacular and profound nonetheless.

Zaphod,

I thought the temple burn was AMAZING. I heard that Best didn't do it this year which is why is was so much smaller, etc...but I thought the Temple itself was beautiful and the burn was SO QUIET. It was like I've heard people describe the first Temple Burns. Almost nobody where I was standing (which was about ten yards from the promenade, two posts out from the Temple) was talking. There was one girl behind me who was talking, but she seemed to be reciting a poem to herself.

I thought it was amazing.

At the Man's burn, too...people SAT. It blew my mind. I've only seen three burns, but I've never seen people sit for the man so others could see the fire dancers and stuff...I just can't say enough how great I thought this year was.
Thanks to Addis, I had more free time.

The second structure that they brought in with the big hole in it blew me away too, we saw it from the front and I kicked myself for using up my last roll of film earlier that day. Just gorgeous.

My wife cried. We posed for a picture in that structure last year, which was our first. It burned beautifully.

God, I miss Black Rock City so much already.

Thank you everybody!

It was an amazing event. I don't think we could have asked for better weather. A little dust on Monday and a little after temple burn, but wow.

Some said that it seemed like they enlarged the radius of the city and that is what made the man seem smaller. He (or was it a she this year?) was farther away and so looked smaller. That might just possibly be bullshit, though.

All I can say is wow, though. It was just amazing.

Anyone notice the sign on the way in that said something like “The man is not smaller, you are bigger.” I think he was smaller and closer to the Esplinade to make room for the big blue head further out. I still think that 03 was the best burn I have been to (granted my 1st burn) But there was so much wood in that thing, and we were in the front row, we were sure our faces were going to melt a la Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Size is relative. I saw a huge space ship in the sky with red lights all over it and a green beam shining down on earth, then I realized it was an antenae coming off a bike.
