Canadians at Burningman

Post by trevisty » Thu Sep 08, 2005 2:31 pm

This was my first year. Intially I was happy to see so many canadian flags being flown at BRC but after I thought about it and started to get into the spirit, I was a little confused. I thought part of Burningman is about inclusion and letting go of yourself and your real world life. By flying a Canadian flag, it identifies you as part of a group and excludes people. Secondly, its a tie to real world life, politics, ...

Just wondering peoples thoughts and opionions. Maybe a couple fellow canadians could help me understand.

Normally I do wear the flag on my backpack while travelling and I'm a proud canadian, but I didn't feel the need to display or identify myself while at burningman.

I wanted to have a Texas flag but never got around to getting one. The thing is that if you're from SF, Portland or LA, you know there are people from where you are there. If you're from somewhere farther away, it's a real kick to meet someone from your area (because Burning Man is a year-round thing for many people and you get to meet people at b-man you can connect with back home).

Remember, that's your interpretation. Sounds like you did the right thing. If you have a problem with flags then don't fly them.

Ashamed to see the flags...

Post by greyheart » Tue Sep 13, 2005 11:57 am

Hey there..
I am a Canadian...And actually just returned to Canada after six months in the States.
And a Canadian, I was ashamed to see all of the Canadian flags.
Flag waving never was a part of the Canadian identity I know as a Canadian. And it seemed really incougrous to see it upon the playa.

I actually had an interesting conversation with a man from Ontario
(Eastern Canada) upon the matter.
He said his camp flew the flags in order to stick out and be individuals & be different from everyone else...not expecting so many other Canadians to be thinking on the same tack.
My response was: At Burning Man everyone is an individual- why fall back onto Nationality- when so many other things about you could help you to shine out? (or something to that effect)
He had no answer to that.
And that is my two cents upon the matter.
As a Canadian, I apoligise for all of the flag waving...truly it saddened me every time I saw one go by...

Personally, I love canadians. They always have lot's of beer and ham (which they refer to as "bacon" for some reason, even though it's really ham cut into circles). Oh, and they're always willing to share. A lot of them actually know how to speak English and they are super fun to hang out with.

They are , however, secretly trying to take over the event. I heard that next year they're going to put a giant maple leaf on where the man's heart should be, and put a hockey stick in one of his hands.

I don't really care though, they couldn't do anything worse to it than what the English and Australians have already done.

(and don't EVEN get me started on the Japanese!)

We'll see how much you love Canadians once they launch their invasion of the US.

Canadians are evil. Cunning, beer swilling predators who've been eyeing the US for years.

BTW, did you know that 'aye' is Canadian code for "I want to drink your child's blood while I hold a pike with it's head stuck on the end?"

As long as they bring their "bacon" and beer, I'm cool.

(I'm also hoping to get on their good side, so maybe they'll let me run one of their re-education camps!!)

You should really start practicing so you'll blend in when they over throw the current regime.

We actually bring out the fact that we're Finnish quite a lot in BM. No, we do not have a flag, but we like telling people where we come from and bring Finnish specialties to taste, and if alcoholically enticed to do so, I will also sing a little in Finnish.

Sometimes I feel a bit uncomfortable about making being Finnish my "thing" on the playa - after all, it's not something I did myself, it was something that happened to me. But then again, it is 1) not the only "thing" I do, and 2) something people seem to enjoy.

I would also like to ask the people who feel that Canadian (or some European) nationality is not something to make part of your individuality, would you feel the same way about someone bringing customs and decorations from some more "exotic" culture (say, something African, native American, Chinese...)?

Let's ALL move up there with our guns and great American Attitudes, Eh?...
(I also learned that: Some Kanadians say "Eh?" and some say "Hey?" It just depends what part of Kanada they are from.)

We also paid a couple friendly visits to Kanuckistan. Tarzie, Darling Dave, J-Cloud, Kane (camped next to us elsewhere) a wonderful woman from Edmonton camped I think @ Bliss and another couple from F.U.C.K camp who I can't remember their names at the moment but they always dropped by our camp for a shower.

All these people contributed greatly to making and in some cases actually salvaging our burn from the wreckage of our theme camp the went up in flames long before the man did...

To all the Canucks who warmly welcomed us, shared their Molson, came by to warm up the atmosphere of our dome tent.... THANKS !! Wish we could have spent more time with you all !!

Nothing to do with Rangering, Our little fish was just making reference to the eventual overthrow of Larry Harvey and the current American regime by the Canadians.

While some people are resistant to this change, I embrace it. I also want the Canadians to know that when the eventual coup-de-tat occurs that I will surrender immediately and embrace the new Canadian World Order.

Bull pussy. Spoken like someone who has never seen a bunch of drunken Canadians at Oktoberfest before. The Canadian National Drinking Team at one table and the fucking Wizzards of Oz at the other. Both teams waiving their flags for all they are worth. Fun police even had to come around and make the Aussies put their clothes back on. Canadians were laughing their flag waving asses off until they realized someone had switched their maple leaf for a union jack. Now THAT was funny.
