theme camp

Post by Honest Joe » Wed Oct 01, 2003 10:52 am

I really want to bring something from new zealand.

Is there anyone in new zealand that is working on a project
or interested in starting on one. I have access to plenty of construction materials and all sorts of strange inventions. carbon arc lights a laser controller, smoke ring cannons, flame fonts... I also work as a pyrotechnic so I can build and fire fire works (if i can get the permits in the US). I work for an unusual events, fireworks and other stuff company so I can get all sorts of strange things there too.

so have you got any ideas ?

before you get really keen think about the practicalities of getting some really cool pyro thingy into the US in these days of ramapnt terrorist paranoia.

Fireworks (and rockets sigh - what I do for fun) are mostly banned at BM except for specially permitted stuff (fireworks are actually legally banned by both the BLM and the local county - rockets require FAA permitting over a certain size).

even flares

Are large illumination flares prohibited too? I want to use some to cast light on to some mirrors. If they are, I am tempted to use a carbon arc lights. They have the advantage that they can be run for hours.

I think they'd be OK (you probably ought to check with the BM pyro people first. As far as carbon arcs are concerned remember that you have to bring your own volts (and if you buy them here they will be the wrong sort :-)

Probably you should think carefully about having REALLY bright things at night - put a ways out on the playa and try to make sure that people who come upon your wonder don't get nightblinded accidentally - the last thing you want is a whole bunch of people run over by bikes/art cars.

Remember that whatever you leave out there will end up having people touching it, climbing on it, poking it to see how it works - this is a good thing people will do things with your art you never thought of - but it has to be robust

currently I'm still zooming around California but I normally stick to Christchurch unless I can find a reason to travel. I might go stay in wellington for a while when I get back as some friends have moved that way, and I have to go visit a friend in Dunedin (she just got engage)

and you?

Wow! How amazing! Just over in Laingholm (I'm in Huia). I went to this year's and last year's so only two times. I've thought about doing some music out there many times but have never organised it to be so. I play the piano and sing :)
