Did the Man burn way too fast?

Post by golgotha-a-go-go » Fri Sep 09, 2005 7:45 am

As far as I could tell, it looked as if the Man caugh fire too fast and ignited all the fireworks at once. Did anyone else perceive this? Usually the pyrotechnics last longer and the burn is slower. Any thoughts?

Maybe this is how it's actually supposed to work, and every other year has been screwed up. :) At least both of his arms worked this time.

I thought the man might have been burning a little faster than planned too, but I am not complaining at all. The effect was the most intense fireworks show I have ever seen at that distance. The crowd went nuts too! It was a really impressive show I thought. After seeing the troubles with the machine the night before, I needed it too.

I've heard the ignition did not go as planned and everything went off at once. Premature pyrotechinics, I wonder if there's a little pill for that.

The pyro may have gone off early (or too quickly) but the man burned for a long period of time.

The 30 minutes of fire spinning could have been cut down a bit, too.

They only got through 4 of the 30 or so pyro cues before the whole shebang went off.

Hey, the man burned hot, and when the "maze" went down, he still stood proud and defiant...

we at Apokiliptika like to think because, for the first time, he realized (and recognized) he had an offspring... who went to visit him. >>grins<< Nothing like finding out one has a kid to make them endure just a bit longer.

And... um... you mean to tell me this is the first time you've had a man go off forcefully and prematurely?? >>grins<<

I thought it was awesome. If it wasn't intended to go off that way, it should have been! Those pyrotechnics, that close up, at the peak of my experience, was just amazing. Best of my 4 burns, for sure.

I thought this was easily the Best Burn I've seen out of 7. I did'nt think the Pyros went off too fast and he burned beautifully.

But hands down, my favorite part of the whole thing was when the second level collapsed................ and he KEPT standing !!!!

Coolest thing I've seen in a LONG TIME !
It's like he was saying
'Twenty years you've been torching my ass then dancin round my embers, not this time...........
NOT THIS <WOAH!!> (looks down)
hmm?

Like I said, NOT THIS TIME !!!!'

We were camped next to a couple of rangers that worked the burn and they told me the following. Someone lit the man in the wrong place which burned through the firing leads for the pyrotechnics as well as some zip ties, allowing some of the fireworks to fall over causing, what appears to me as, a horizontal explosion in the east facing wall of the man and all the fireworks went off at once. Since my wife and I decided to watch the burn from afar we did not get a real good view of any explosions though I could swear I saw an explosion off the east side. At any rate it was quite spectacular and reminded me of the Death Star exploding. In the end I think the burns are turning into to much of a circus, no pun intended as to the design of the man this year. Anyone agree/disagree?

I watched the burn from out at the temple and it seemed like the fire dancers took forever. Of course that gets into satisfying some egos and touches sacred cows so I won't push the issue. As for the fireworks I don't care about fireworks other than an opening salvo to announce to the world that things are underway. I'm glad they did go off at once..now with that crap out of the way lets watch the fire vortexes and discuss which part will fail first and what direction he/she will fall.

All that being said if there's one event that deserves all the spectacle it's the burning of the man. After all we're not driving out to see the burning art car festival, we're out there for BURNING MAN. It is the signature event so like it or not we'll be living with overkill surrounding it for some time to come.

I have to say there's advantages from watching it from a distance. The experience was a lot better without tripping over art cars, being shoved, watching fights, or being told to sit your ass down in front.

(And one last thing...there's a guy who comes out with what looks like a giant mushroom with stringers hanging down, and he twirls the damn thing in front of you, or over at various dance camps when you are trying to dance. You have no idea how much I dislike that damn thing....it's too bad a strategically placed knee or foot in the nether regions couldn't discourage him from messing up other people's experiences when they ask him to move multiple times.)
