To the Person who left an UNMARKED Car Seat on the Playa:

Post by nova_mike » Fri Sep 09, 2005 5:55 pm

You ruined my friends trip. She was riding her bike at night Mondayand hit the car seat you left lying on the playa unmarked. She flew over the handle bars and slammed her face into the ground.

35 stitches
Broken nose
and an eye that won't focus correctly now.

:x :x :x :x :x

PLEASE MARK YOUR SHIT!!!

Sorry to be the ass and devils advocate... how lit was your friend? If you light yourself up enough and use a bike headlight like suggested in the Survival Guide the chances of something like this lessen.

I hope your friend heals well with minimal scarring because no one deserves to be hurt. Also I do think it is shitty to leave items on the playa without lighting them.

So yeah, have at me all you want.

I know that one of my friends has trouble seeing at night anyway, and was having particular difficulty at the event, even with a good headlamp. Gotta have lights, but any object in the open playa really should be illuminated.

I felt obnoxious every time I turned on my very effective headlight; the shit was almost always brighter than everything around me (it's a halogen CatEye, fyi). I had those feelings of, "well, I guess everyone can see me, even though I don't look all cool like that dude over there rocking the el-wire, etc. etc.". But then I realized just how much shit I was seeing because of my light, and said fuckit. Felt much safer, and safer still when I decided to cruise slowly everywhere (okay, my GF decided that one for us).

Having said all that, there was indeed wayyy too much unlit stuff on the playa, including a few artworks-in-progress right by the esplanade that had crazy guy wires going with no lights whatsoever.

I'm really sorry for your friend. I hope she heals okay, and wants to return.

That's one of few reasons why my girlfriend and I always walk during the night.

The main enemy of burners are those mean corner markers from dpw. Allmost half off the injuries i treated at the med tent were caused by these stakes i actually managed to run into one myself during the week lmao. I had lights on i knew the pole was out there bam i nailed it lmao. Anyways for the rest of the week i illuminated the ones in front of my camp at 930 and catharsus others should do the same. or not . BIG E

So this is her fault? Fuck that.. she probably could have been riding slower but come on. The issue is some fuckhead leaving a car seat on the playa.. that's bullshit.

There are plenty of people who go to burningman and are not on some type of substance. I'm sick of the stigma associated to everyone who attends. Oh and BTW, she doesn't party.

I've been hospitalized several times becasue of bike related accidents. Still I have a hard time sympathizing with the injured girl. I think it is idiotic to ride at night. To be safe, i.e., with enough light, you have to hurt the eyes of other people. That just makes you a selfish asshole. Or to be considerate and not blind other people, you have to ride in the dark, which means that you will hit shit that is unlighted on the playa. Given that such unlit shit is a given, riding at night is pretty dumb and inconsiderate. This reponse is also colored by the fact that several years ago I was hit by a biker, despite my glowie things. He was just fucking stupid and high as a kite.

Afraid you can't consume as much art when on foot? Too bad! When the sun goes down, go on foot. Everybody's happier!

Suggestion: Petzl LED headlamps like the Tikka with red lenses. Bright enough to see where you're going yet not be obnoxious. BRC is a bike oriented city. There's no reason why you should have to give up your bike when there are alternative lighting methods available. Even a pinkish piece of plastic wrap can be made into a simple but effective light filter to fit a wide variety of lights if the Tikka is too pricey.

Also makes me wonder how many lights are stolen by ravers as eye candy when put on playa art. A lot of the art on playa when I was first attending had no lights attached to them. I find it odd people blaming others when running into them. Yes it would be nice if everyone was nice, but is it truly bad if everyone is naughty?

You are all missing the point. It wasn't a piece of art she hit. It was GARBAGE someone ripped out of a car and left on the playa.

Not missing the point. Read the ticket. While lighting your art is nice, don't count on everyone doing it. You can't make assumptions that everyone will make life easy for you. This would include someone leaving crap somewhere on the playa. I never took my bike out at night for just this reason.

personally, i think it is George's fault.

George has really let the country down, and this is simply one more indication of his inability to lead this country.

impeach george for leaving that UNMARKED Car Seat on the playa.

damn him!

There is absolutely nothing obnoxious about having a light at nighttime, especially if you are on the open playa, walking or riding. It is the safe thing to do. Don't worry about blinding me or another. Your light will pass. Your health will last.

I carry multiple lights when walking or riding. if I see a bike coming at me directly, I flash warning signals. An LED light is not enough. LED plus el, plus other lights is the only way to go. I plan on carrying extra lights in case I run into that dangerous unlit stuff out there. If you think that is obnoxious, I think you are a fool; feel my light!

Even in broad daylight, when I'm out and around in the city I habitually jingle my bike bell or honk my horn at intersections, where there's ALWAYS someone on bike or foot whose head is 180 degrees off from their direction of travel...This is compounded hugely at night, of course. In addition to blinkythings on yourself or on playa art, a few well-placed strips of reflective tape can make a difference, too- You can light the crap out of your Shrine To The Manga Gods, or whatever, and have ravers strip your lights off (seen it happen) leaving pure obstacle behind.

I'm telling you that being blinded is obnoxious. It is easy to light one's bike or self up sufficiently and still not blind anyone with a harsh electric light. If you're on bike and following the speed limit, you will have plenty of time to not hit anything. If you are going faster, too bad.

What do you feel allows you to deny my perceptions and experience and to call me names?

I'm sorry, did I mention you directly? You are not the target here, unless I mention you by name. Please excuse the appearance of my remarks.

I'm sorry if I blind you for a second with a good strong light, but I think safety dictates the use of good lights when either walking or riding at night. I would rather slightly annoy some people than hurt or get hurt.

Excuse me if I hurt your feelings. Mostly I am sorry for those who were physically hurt on the playa this year. My advice, and you are free to ignore this, is to use good lights, and use as many as you can.

I love exploring the deep playa at night and I would advise those with similar inclinations to use lights.

How that is a denial of your perceptions is beyond me, but if you were offended, please excuse me.

In my exploration of the open playa this year, I came across a number of unmarked sights, and I plan on bringing extra lights if I make it out there again....not less lights, but more.

I love this line, "if you are going faster, too bad." Compassion dictates a good strong light. too bad indeed.

I do not think he means "lit" in the sam way you appear to think he means "lit". That or I missed any implications of her partying.

said accident sounds aweful.

that said and sympathy given, she really should have either walked, fixed a light on her bike or not gone so damned fast. any one of those things would probably have resulted in a different ending than 35 stitches.

personally, i go out on foot SANS lights. i like being dark. i am agile enough to move out of harms way if need be. i am slow enough that i probably wont incur a major injury if i do run into something.

also, my friend hit one of those damned street corner things put up by dpw. he had stitches and an UGLY black eye but that didn't ruin his trip.
