Seeking details about mousetrap explosion (Monday?)

Post by mr. fang » Fri Sep 09, 2005 6:00 pm

I just heard today that a friend was hospitalized after being struck in the eye by shrapnel after the moustrap folks decided to drop a large safe onto some propane tanks. Did anyone witness this explosion? I would like to know more details about what happened.

I can't condone such reckless behavior (that must have endangered a lot of people)

Thanks for the condescension, but I've already read the ticket. I'm not preaching or passing judgement here, just asking for more info about what happened at the mousetrap.

I heard that someone set up a big ass ladder that you could easily fall off of and die...

I don't think it's a good idea to intentionally try and hurt people, but did you really look at that contraption and think, "I bet it'd be safe to hang out right here while thousands of pounds of steel are flailing wildly around."

As a side note, I recommend buying "Bomber" sunglasses. Not only are they less than 10 bucks, but they double as safety glasses (and look cool, to boot).

I guess I should make another note here: I'd like to hear from people who actually have some concrete information about what happened. I'm not asking for opinions or advice. Thanks.

Its ALL fun and games until someone loses a propane tank!

I could never quite get my Mousetrap game to work properly at home either. I wonder if the borg2 crew could come over and have a look?

Not quite the info you are looking for, but I will say that when I watched the mousetrap game in action, the whole thing took a looooooong time to set up. During that time they took donations for smashing under the big safe. While they were doing that, they warned spectators to put on goggles or move away, because schrapnel was likely to fly. They especially warned that the inside liquid from the glow sticks that were donated might get in their eyes. Few people moved. Several put on goggles. I closed and covered my eyes when the safe dropped. There was plenty of time in which to take any number of precautions.

Now, of course, I don't know if this guy or gal who got hurt just happened to come up upon the scene at the last minute and had no prior warning, which, IMHO, would have to be chalked up as an unfortunate ACCIDENT. From what I experienced at the Mousetrap, I can only praise the crew for their creativity, ingenuity, technical skill, costumes, teamwork, and crowd consciousness.

Madmatt,

Please refrain from childish name calling on the eplaya. It's perfectly acceptable to disagree with an idea, concept or point of view but the name calling thing is not ok.

Thanks,

Chai Guy.

Sorry, it just pisses me off when well intentioned people come here and post sincere questions or requests that are genuinely interesting and IMHO something I wanted to know about, and they get that kind of response as their reward, and no less from a guy who supposedly is helping people, etc.

a crusty old salt like badger can handle the name calling. But the sincere questioner should get some respect and I think badg would have given him a straight answer if he had the info. He's just playing around since he don't know.

I did find some stakes on the playa that had no lights on them and notified our friendly rangers. I hate to see people get hurt even if the whole game is at your own risk. Next year, I'm going to carry extra safety lights in case I see more of that out there.

Steer clear of the falling and burning crap. always wear glasses or goggles.

My friend Paradox was at the mousetrap when they dropped the safe on the propane tanks. Sounds like everyone there was warned of the danger, and she hid behind something solid. She said one of the guys performing the stunt got hit with shrapnel.

Love them Badger Smooches! >>gerins<<

Sorry I missed the safedrop - sounds like it would have been quite the "fire art"... It sucks that people got hurt, of course (since I know the people who have to respond to such things) but as in real life, people have to (1) be aware of their surroundings and what's going on (Hey, what's this propane tank doing out hee with a safe perched above it... Hmmm... Look at the pretty rainbows... BOOM!) and (2) take responsibility for their own actions.

I'm sorry, but I agree a bit with Badger - you're an adult, you're the one ultimately responsible for your own safety, you KNOW the event is inherantly dangerous (yeah, read your ticket and all that), so it's up to YOU, not some outsider (like the rangers or the llc or whatever) to be responsible for you. They provide a safety net, but that doesn't mean you can ignore common sense.

It's also up to the camp who rund the display to have some control over their contraption, so if something *does* pose an unexpected hazard they have a reasonable chance of aborting the gig. It's like having a fire cannon and realizing that it's not a prudent idea to fire the thing when someone is looking down the barrel of it (tho there are some people... >>evil grins<<)...

So yeah - it's up to the "displayers" to use reasonable caution when operating their heavy machinery, and the spectators (OK, OK, Participants, whatever) to be aware of their own personal safety.

Yay, another unsolicited post full of opinions, even after I asked for concrete information and not opinions and advice.

Is there anyone here who's not an egomaniac?

Sometimes, you even get *more* than what you pay for! Ask our friends at the BLM... >>wince<<

It's all part of the gift economy, dont'cha know.

I am sorry your friend got hurt... now let me give you my sage advice... Ever thought of asking the friend what the hell happened? After all... they were there. How about the mousetrap people? Ask them? How about the Rangers or ESD? Bet they have some info. Just beware - some of them are egomaniacs as well...

Speaking of... I've been called many things, but this is the first time I've been called an egomaniac. Kinda nice ring to it. Thanks!!

I know what happened. I know all about what went down that night. I don't tend to discuss it for very practical reasons that and my ego would undoubtedly get in the way of telling the tale.

BB Sue's advice is spot on. Ask your friend about what happened. Your probing here sets you up to look like either a hack reporter or a lawyer. Not saying that you are or that your intentions are necessarily questionable BTW.

Exactly! This is the third or fourth post I've read of the type: "I heard something bad happened to my friend, will someone please publicly post all the details..." WTF? If they're your friend why don't you just ask them?

Confused,

Emerald

Geez, and all this time, I heard that propane tanks were safe ... now I don't know what to think! Sheesh

Now if you will all excuse me, I have to go back to thinking highly of myself.

You gave opinions in your original post; that generally results in people giving their opionions in return.

For the record, I didn't ask my friend because he had not yet returned to the city we live in. When he did return, I did ask him about it.

You post a smarmy reply in a thread I started, and you then later you have the nerve to ask me for something? If I thought you were serious, I might actually answer.
