Stalking On and Off the Playa

This is the second year we (my spouse of 20 years and myself) have been stalked on the Playa. This year included a death threat the night of the Temple Burn and a threatening phone call on the way home to our cell phone (among many other serious threats). Although no injuries were sustained this year, a private investigator has taken this on as a pro-bono case even though we offered to pay for his services. The local University hospital is cooperating by providing documentation of the injuries incurred last year by this group. We do not know who this group of people are although we do know that they have met and conferred with the Bureau of Land Management in 2004 and participated with the Burning Man medical staff. The cell phone provider is now also providing help. The PI is starting by determining which police agencies to make an official report to and also to identify a young man and woman who were photographed while stalking us.

We would very much like to drop this whole thing. This group made it very clear they knew our home address by saying it to us and also my vehicle (not the one we came to BM04/05 in, but the car at home in my driveway). My past profession was in documentation and making hard concepts easy to understand. I have begun to write up the details of these events, tactics, and threats and will post them, however, I would rather not. I value the safety of my family over any desire to publish this document. If this group will contact us (not by posting here, or using the harrassing 1 800 phone number, nor email) by leaving some kind of information (not in a harmful or destructive manner) at our home or on the vehicle (you made it very clear to us that you knew this information), we will meet with you to discuss what we did wrong at Burning Man such that it resulted in this stalking and death threat. We will meet at a reasonably safe place and bring no recording devices. We simply want assurances that this stalking will cease and we will be left in peace. After that, we will absolutely discontinue any pursuit of this matter.

I have begun writing and am not a slow worker. I figure you have a week to conact us and make arrangements. I also figure if you plan not to do this type of stalking to any other Burner in the future, then it won't matter if I publish the details, but we will continue to seek the identity of the two people who were documented participating in this stalking etc...

If this posting sounds like a threat. You are reading it completely wrong. This is us begging.

Responses here will be varied including that this kind of thing is not possible at Burning Man. I will not defend or refute claims. This is where things stand.

Why on earth would someone want to stalk you in the first place? You sound paranoid. Sure you didn't take one too many "orange sunshines" back in the 60s?

Further intimidation is not communication. You definitely win on that score, enough so that I'm terrified to publish, but without assurance that you can control your entire group, including those that made the death threats, means there's nothing in it for us except possible further harrassment and fear.

The workings of the LLC are general opaque to me, but I cannot imagine they'd take on the liablity of continuing to associate with a volenteer who was behaving in such a way.

ESD is less mysterious to me, and I can say with a great deal of confidence that I don't belive that the professionalism of our department head would let anyone back for a 2nd year to do that.

I can second Fishie with regards to ESD - our chief is the epitome of integrity and doing the right thing (that's why I love working with them so much - working for people like him really spoils us for other things in the mundane world!!) and if it *were* someone somehow attached to our group I have no doubt that (1) they would no longer be part of our group, and (2) because of the liability that would incur to the LLC if they were, they would no doubt be coordinating with the authorities if one of our ranks somehow were implicated in this kind of brouhaahaa.

God help them (putting on my default world supervisory management hat here) if they worked under me. I have NO sense of humor when it comes to staff creating liabilities for whoever my employer is, and they would find themseves on the short end of my boot up their... um... you know.

Of course, by "medical staff" they could well be talking about REMSA or maybe even other persons or staff who are not attached to ESD. One never knows.

Then again, like he pancake... things seem a little fuzzy about all of this...

a little of the couple who left our village in the middle of the event a few years ago. Said they felt sick and weird after hosting some strangers during a white out. They thought the BM board should warn others about dosing. I pointed to the existing warning in that year's suvival guide.

Male thought he was being disrepected in our work zone, and developed repiratory distress. They didn't follow community kitchen theme meal menu planning and brought what they considered an unappreciated donation of meat. Left and returned before their final departure to buy new water supply. Garbage can full of gas station hose water tasted bad to them.

Female wrote cryptic followup email punctuated by the blurting out of the word "kindness". Warned about dangerous toxins in common drinking water (No, it wasn't dihydrogenoxide). She also advised that folks shouldn't drink a lot of alcohol the moment they hit the playa.

Went to their website and found they specialized in making film docs about toxic house molds, after fleeing their own mold-laden digs.

Seen the movie "Safe"?

Enlightenment? Sheesh, the only thing missing from that list of trumped up charges is assault by the Pershing County Sheriff. Every other group with authority seems to have picked on them including Sanctuary whom I have heard nothing but the highest praise about...until now. And the U-haul packed with the telephoto lenses? Puhleeze!

Someone needs some hardcore medication. And fast.

I know a thing or two about being stalked, this isn't stalking, it appears to be paranoia. On a grandiose scale. If they don't get meds they certainly need to consider therapy. Or if it really is a stalker spill your guts, dump the entire batch of evidence online and let the online world and the internet in general help with your fight. It works...as they say, been there, done that, got the t-shirt and the bumper sticker too.

Kind of reminds me of the DC Sniper case a while back. Remember how the police were giving those loony news conferences in which they were told by the Sniper to repeat those nonsensical phrases so that he would stop (great police work by the way!- ugh!).

So maybe that's what's going on here.
