It keeps coming up randomly in posts. So, I gotta know, have I seen you at the Red Garter? Stand up and be counted.

I swear I know more burners in SD and SF than I do in my own town.
So like, I am interested in 'thelocalcommunity' but I am not interested in Gigsville. It seems like everything BM L.A. based starts and ends with that org. Any west siders have any advice on getting in touch without going through that gate?

Sorry, can't help you there. Gigsville was the only group that I found
resonated with what I was looking for.
You're on Twan's LA announce list, right? Show up to that stuff. It's
not the only stuff going on, but it's a decent start. And certainly not
Gigsville-centric by any stretch.

if you want to avoid running into villains at any cost, it's going to be tough. if you want to avoid things having explicitely to do with the village at burning man, there are a lot of nominal gigsville events that are really just kind of l.a. gatherings.
i'd suggest, though, doing the stuff on the l.a. announce list, going to mutaytor shows, going to inge's meet&greets, paynies loft parties. there's the nuclear family, which is pretty large, has a bunch of people on the westside, and has not too much gigsville overlap. and if you can handle a crowd that's maybe half villains, you could try out santacon, and see if your fears are warranted.
or, you could announce a drinking night in venice, meet a bunch of people there (odds are i'd show up), meet a bunch of people you hit it off really well with, and only belatedly realize you fell through that door.

I totally second Trey's suggestion. I may not be "in LA" but I'm close enough to cause trouble and I'm not too keen on hanging out with most of the people from Gigsville. I totally second the Nova gathering for great low-key, get-to-know-you kind of stuff, and Paynie's place always gets a totally eclectic mix of people.
On a slightly related note:
Various friends and I were discussing the fact that LA has no actual discussion list. Yes, Gigsville has one, but clearly there are a lot of non-Gigsvillians. I know random people have started up Yahoo Groups in the past, but never with much success. Is it just that there hasn't been a demand for it and only now people are starting to inquire? Or is it something fundamentally LA or something else? I just was thinking about it.

yes Ivy, this is curious to me as well. I went to the la regional link and it just dumped me into gigsville. This seems a bit odd. But, of all the cities I have lived in, L.A. definately has the strangest social scene. I swear, it's a fucking art hanging out around here and avoiding all the 'industry' shit going on.
Anyway, thanks to all for the great info on the various back doors. Perhaps I will see you around soon.

Heh heh, tell me about it...

You are going to the party tomorrow night, yes?
so i'm thinking that i'm going to be in venice tomorrow (oct 9th) probably not to far from the red garter. and i'm thinking that if i went out for a drink there, it might be neat to run into some people from here.
however, i can be flakey, so if no one responds, i may go, or i may not. so if you think meetinng there's a good idea, you should probably lemme know...

I'm considering Friday nite as a more probable opportunity for me to "meet & greet". I live in the LBZ near Ivy, so finding burners in our hood would bee good too. I am willing to travel to Venice; just gimme the co-ord's if it may happen Friday the 10th...
>>I too would be interested in meeting other burners in the la area.
There should be a fair number of burners wandering around Art Walk
(http://www.breweryart.org/) at the Brewery this weekend too.
I think Megavolt is gonna unveil his St. Elmo's Fire thang at Abundant
Sugar (one of the brewery warehouses, rented by burners) sometime on
Saturday.

If for some strange reason, none of these exciting adventures this weekend appeal to you, my meager parks & rec theater group is doing their annual show this weekend. Actually, two performances Sat and one on Sunday. Yours tryuly did the costumes and even stars in one of the numbers. Not nearly as cool as the artwalk (believe me, I'd be there if I could), but if you happen to be in the neighborhood, drop me a line. You can watch me trip wile dancing *and* listen to off-key children sing all for a measly $5.
