I think the common thread through all these different approaches and experiences, is an appreciation for whimsy.

Quite a rare thing really.

Rare in general, in the Default Realm, is what I think Gyre means. I agree. Peoples' public facades are too rigid from disuse to allow for much silly play without self-consciousness.

In your original pre-Burn post: "quantum physics declares that i am strongly affected by the paradigms which people in my environment are projecting on me..."

Flip that around. Burningman is 35,000 people, including you and me, projecting not paradigms but a quantum wave of chaotic, kinetic, creative energy onto the Playaverse. We contribute to this quantum wave, both by feasting on the experience and by adding our own brush strokes. From all my readings on this here e-playa, and talking with folks at BRC, the intense perception of this energy, by 1st timers like myself, is common and also incomparable to any other experience. Remember riding out onto the nighttime Playa for the first time and your grin almost splits your head in half?

Or, it's your basic pagan decadence. Fun with Fire.

Got THAT right.

One of my fondest memories of Burn One was getting to the campsite and immediately running out to the Man....I wanted to run up the steps (it was '03) but saw the labyrinth in front and decided that protocol ought to be observed- So I walked the whole thing, shouting "I'm comin', you big flammable sonofabitch!!" And THEN ran up the stairs. Whatta view.

meant to suggest that even in the midst of the Default Realm if one were surrounded entirely by individuals acting in a non-default way, that one would experience a Non-default Realm

defaultism would become the rarity

Yes, exactly what Robotland said.

I tell everyone I live at 7:30 and Fetish.

I realize now that is how I really feel.
I'm just temporarily out in the cold.
Just visiting.

There is a very serious problem with burning man.
Afterward, everything else is so fucking boring!

Every day I tell myself that i'd like to see just one art car driving around (aimlessly at 5 mph) on a city street. Just one, dammit! Is that too much to ask?

Move to Berkeley. I can't promise you 5 mph, but it's creepy how many art cars live here. Tres Harrod Blank...

What is the Burn

Post by Rev. Terry Simon Scott » Mon Nov 21, 2005 7:34 pm

Interesting how we went from what is the Burn to a discussion of New Age Spirituality vs quantum mechanics. As a life long Pagan, I hope you are not lumping us in with the new agers.
Quantum Mechanics are the point where the mystics and the scientist meet.
As for the Burn, as an old hippie, I see this most wonderful gathering to be this generations Wood Stock, except you get to have it every year.
Peace and Blessings.

Couple of things:

Burning Man is everything you can imagine, but you’ve got to accept that your imagination doesn’t go far enough.

and,
Remember riding out onto the nighttime Playa for the first time and your grin almost splits your head in half?
Hell, human, third time and the grins still there. This year, me talking to a friend, 'My face hurts.' Her, 'It's that big grin you've had on your face for the last three days.'. Me, 'Oh, well, its all right then.'.
I like playing with fire.
