Useless Errata
Somehow, this just tickles my fancy; I like the idea of Ring having his own Resource Management Plan, or some BLM land having its own theme song. Easily amused, I suppose.

I think that she is tickled by the fact that it says Ring of Fire Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement.
So, just imagine for a moment if old Ring of Fire (he used to be here on eplaya a lot more often) would have written such a statement. What it would contain, I bet it would be humorous.
Anyways, I get it. I'm also amused Fishy.

Hey, and every once in a while it does. I heard that song somewhere by 3:30 and delerium.theCryptofishist wrote: or some BLM land having its own theme song.
Though what if just the office that managed that land used the theme song? Think about that, ooo and what if it was staffed by all Ring of Fires.

the owl's essentially right. I imagine a 3 volume document full of verbiage that sez stuff about how Ring's gonna manage his sence of humor over the next 15 years and about whether his icy/hot supplies can be sustainably harvested.
Conversely, I imagine the BLM agents at that particular office, when they meet agents from other offices in inter-office horseshoe games and competitive quilting bees singing rousing choruses of Johny Cash and gaining an incalculable advantage over other field offices having to sing awkward beurocratically written hymns like "Winnemucca" and "Clear Creek Management Area" that just don't have the same power. Obviously, I spend a bit too much time in the bowl of my own skull...

Is this the place for useless errata??? I found something[most likely false] that could make a theme camp centerpiece.

"The link between periods of insanity and exposure to specific infrasound frequencies forms the basis for the ‘Feraliminal Lycanthropizer’, a device claimed to stimulate atavistic animality, sexual excitement, and a loss of inhibitions in its target. As described in an essay published in Dainty Viscera magazine, the Feraliminal Lycanthropizer creates two infrasound frequencies – 3Hz and 9Hz – which, combined, generate a lower, third
frequency of 0.56Hz. The machine also uses a combination of four subliminal, looped, audio tape recordings – playing both forwards and backwards – outside the normal audible pitch.

Beats the hell out of Chicken Booger camp, I suppose. But what I find interesting is how it could be "subliminal" if it is beyond the hearing. Your brain, even the subconscious isn't going to pick it up if it can not be delivered to the brain (outside the frequency response of the ear).
To buy into this would mean the ear having a greater frequency response than the conscious brain can detect *and* some unconscious part of the brain can in fact detect it but can not immediately make it known to the rest of the brain. I think such a thing could be easily tested by viewing brain activity while being offered audio stimulus outside of the normal range of hearing.
My take? I suspect that the mere suggestion of the effect is enough to manifest it. A sort of placebo effect.

I found a strange place.
DW: Calea zacatechichi is a Mexican shrub that induces a divinatory state in the user while dreaming. After smoking and drinking an infusion of the leaves, one goes to bed and dreams. In those dreams, one is likely to find lost objects, people and/or animals. On waking, the subject now knows where to go to find those lost objects, people or animals. I was fortunate to successfully grow Calea zacatechichi in my back yard in the Richmond district of San Francisco during the 1990s.

I just read that the Japanese population is shrinking. The male pop anyway. There are 129,000 fewer males in Japan than last year.
Cities are generally anti-family and Japan is too expensive. Russia and Italy are having similar problems. Sad that so many places are just bad for families.

Hearing
I am not sure what the lower limits are for human hearing. I believe they extend to lower frequencies than commonly believed.
However, low frequencies are picked up by proprioceptors all over the body.
I have a sound system which reproduces well below 20 hertz. An odd effect of true bass reproduction is that the urge for higher volume seems to be tied to the lack of true low frequency. Vocals and acoustic music are transformed by an increase in realism. Loud music is strangely satisfying at low levels when the low end is audible. By low end I mean 20-70 hertz. Most rock doesn't go that low and has actually been filtered off at a high point. Jazz trios usually have great bass. I am convinced that low distortion and accurate low end is crucial for music.
French scientists made low frequency sirens that were extremely efficient and capable of destroying buildings and injuring technicians. I am unaware of any success in aiming such a device.
There have been some interesting things done with resonant tubes and tuned hammers.(separate devices)
Spatial imaging primarily comes from low frequency which is why you never use mono subwoofers in a stereo system.
The Navy believes that hearing can be more directionally sensitive than vision. I think they are trying to produce an omnidirectional sound system to exploit this. (multi-point sources)
Bass at 100 hertz is directional. It reflects well, but it is directional.
MBL has an interesting bass speaker which is virtually omnidirectional.
I understand it is a little expensive.

FUCK THE FRENCH
the fucking french are at it again.
Oct. 20, 2005
" The European Union, led by our good friends, the French, suddenly reversed their position and announced general support for U.N. control of the internet."
They're going to vote in a few weeks.
http://www.cfif.org/htdocs/freedomline/ ... ernet.html
The fucking UN is hot on their heels to tax E-mail.
"E-mail tax. Global taxation zealots smell a powerful opportunity in the Internet. Under their plan, e-mail users would pay a tax of about $.01 for each megabyte of data that they send, generating up to $150 billion"
http://www.cfif.org/htdocs/freedomline/ ... _taxes.htm
Forget the fact that we invented it and built it. How would one actually steal the internet?
I don't understand the tech part. If we refuse, what can they actually do?
I say fuck the UN. Fuck the clammoring masses. They've done land "redistribution" in several countries over the years. It rarely works out. Zimbabwe is a perfect example. Their agricultural GDP has gone down since they started confiscating farms to "redistribute"
The UN likes "redistribute". It sounds better than steal.

Joe,
I heard it was 36,000 people. Unknown number of alien phenomenae.
The mbl speaker I mentioned is the 101E Radialstrahler. It is not as pricey as I thought, but not cheap. It doesn't extend very deep into the bass range, but the sound generation is unique.
If anyone wants clean very low frequency, you do it with a lot of cone surface.

Burning Man Needs More Explosions
I went to a very large building demolition with a lot of explosions the other day. I wore my goggles and kerchief from burning man. (still can't wash the playa dust off) I got as close as I could. The thrum through your feet from all eight explosions was terrific.
Now that is real bass!
The dust did make me appreciate the desert dust.
The dust was very nasty and expanded out a mile or so.
It looked like fog as I drove away. When it first barreled out you couldn't see through it.
Anyone who enjoys this sort of thing should go see a shuttle launch.
You have to be there to find out what it feels like.

Explosions are great. A neighbor witnessed tests at Bikini. He said that he was really impressed to see a battleship 1/4 mike up the column of a mushroom cloud. Personally I'd like to see/feel something like Krakatoa.

The name comes from the poem by Lewis Carroll.
It has a few fairly esoteric meanings as well.
I think Nyiragongo would be interesting, with or without an eruption.
The plateau around the lava tube would be the ideal place for burning man. You voluntarily assume...
Tambora in 1812 is supposed to be more incredible than Krakatoa, but news travelled slowly then and it was somewhat forgotten.
Krakatau was in time for the news to flash quickly.
I suppose either would be lively enough for me.
Crater Lake in Oregon hit a VEI of 6 and later a 7, roughly around 4895 BC. There's a nice lodge in the caldera.
I imagine Yellowstone will go eventually.
Most people don't realize the park is in a caldera. Go out at night to Old Faithful without a crowd and you can feel the water rushing through the ground. When the top came off to form Yellowstone it was rather a large eruption.
I believe a friend died at Mt. St. Helens. Like others, he is not listed among the dead.
