Today was dedicated to forging out a bunch of vines for the current railing that's inshop. Or at least pieces that will eventually be vines. And... I found a ceiling fan at sLowe's that was on clearance... one I'd been looking at for a while to boot!!! So I got it hung up and now am feeling pretty swell.

But don't worry... I'm sure tomorrow will beat me back down.

I'm waiting for the sandal picture.........ok, later then!

LeChat, the trailer axle I heated up and pounded straight again worked perfect! When I went over to my friend's house and handed her the axle she was amazed at how straight I got it!

I thought she’d stumble on that saying ,

reminds me of when I was in High School before my parents stopped asking questions they really didn’t want to know the assure to. Dad asked if I’d smoked any of that Pot stuff , I told I had, and all he said was “ Just don’t get caught with it“....

I think some of his co-workers at the packing plant, had gotten into legal problems in the past.

Yeah!!!!! It’s amazing how you can straighten things back out like that. When I forge out a long piece of whatever-size-stock, it’s always gets all wiggly. But you can take your time and eyeball down the length of it and get it right back to where it was to begin with.

Just watch those fingers, ok?

I've got a slack tub, which is half a bourbon barrel filled with water, sitting near the forge. If I need to cool something off, say... to handle it from the other end or whatever, I dip it in and swirl it around. If I don't have to mess with it for a while, I sit it on the work table, which is steel, to let it cool on it's own.

If you cool it with water, you can cause internal stress and you may not want that. Sometimes, like with certain types of heat treating, you want to quench it quickly, but that's another matter all together.

Oh, too late now....I used the garden hose on the axle. If they don't load a ba-zillion pounds of dirt into the trailer again maybe it won't bend again!

(slides RebA a piece of coffee cake and a fork)

Might as well have 2 pieces!

Ok so I realize talking about things that took place at the dawn of time in my youth seems strange for a guy my age, but I never stop remembering those things , I guess for me it’s part of cherishing my life not only the past but the present.

In the mid 70’s in Iowa, I don’t think most parents would have dealt with me as well as my parents did. My Mom had nerves of steel . I was probably in junior High in the basement experimenting with gunpowder propane, butane , and home made gun powder. after what must have been a few hours of explosions, I heard the door open up and Mom called down “ you ok” I said yeah, “ ok “ the door shut.

And now I’m toying with the idea of making a propane canon, the more things change the more they stay the same. ...

I miss my mom

Gees now I'm sounding like a sloppy drunk.

I have one of those fire pits on wheels for the backyard and i was burning branches and wood and I ust put it under the hot embers for a while. Then I took it out and I have a piece of angle iron to put it on because I didn't think it would work to bang on it on the sidewalk.

this is a garden trailer-like axle, yes?

If anything you added carbon from the burning branches to it and made a little harder. Don't sweat it. If it were a spindle from a road-worthy trailer on the other hand, we might have a problem.

Z... you must... simply must, next time I’m up that way, remind me to tell you about homemade cannons and how I made the cats stay hidden for two days when I was a kid. It’s much better if my brother is there to tell the story with me, but...

And then we can move on to potato cannons.

Hey Geekster, have you ever seen those models of the solar system that they sometimes have at large parks? Maybe you could do something like that? Set up the solar system model on the open playa and make each planet move on a gps controlled in accordance with the actual planets?
Interesting idea, but too "busy" for me, I think. Might be a good "community" project though! Maybe even add an asteroid to have a "near miss" with Earth ... or maybe collide on burn night.

Was thinking more along the lines of a big fucking box. Sometimes you would be able to hear voices coming from inside, like people are tinkering with something. Every once in a while they might "fuck up" something and a blue flash and maybe some smoke will leak out. Maybe a couple of pretty small "radiation hazard" stickers on it in certain locations. Haven't got it all sorted out in my head yet. Next year is going to have kind of a cool moon setup. Moon will be out at sunset. I believe on burn night it will be setting at or a little after midnight if my understanding of the phase is correct but I haven't looked at actual moonset times. I want there to be a really severe "accident" at some point and the whole thing catches on fire. It would be cool to make it look like an emergency response at first and then the "responders" actually become burn perimeter control. Need some kind of way to make a fairly spectacular burn without causing any (uncontrolled) explosions. Don't know where/how I would test it first but I would need to. Maybe start off with magnesium and smoke inside the box, bright as fuck but shielded enough by the box so it doesn't blind anyone before adding some serious fuel somehow to make a spectacular flame. Need to figure out a burn pllan that give me an "emergency situation" ... some smoke, some flashes, then a really, really fucking bright fire inside the box that then starts a rather spectacular "conventional" fire as it dies out and engulfs the whole thing. The outer shell would need to stay intact long enough for just about all the magnesium to burn up.

You guys remember the old pop cans that were tin and not 'luminum?
We used to take 5 of those, cut the tops and bottoms off 4 them and the 5th one we'd punch holes in the top and one hole at the bottom(to light it) on the side. Then we'd duct tape them all together, take a tennis ball with most of the fuzz burnt off, squirt lighter fluid in the bottom can, stick the ball in the top and shake it up....then quickly set it on the ground and light the thing off! Man.....you could barely see the ball because it went so high!

(Oops, you were right Geekster, it was lighter fluid)

We used to do the same thing. Used lighter fluid in the "cannon". I think they evolved into potato guns at some point.
