Are you referencing Malcolm in the Middle? This is a satire about Burning Man, and least the Bmorg did not sell us out on that. Malcolm can get away with this the "one time fair use" clause as stipulated in US copyright laws.

But the BMorg did sell us out to the Discovery Channel/New York Times.

Here's the full details: http://www.savebrc.org

Larry Harvey once said: "The Internet is a populist medium which has a unique way of empowering every individual. And it's an interactive medium -- unlike TV -- which allows people to connect with other people and out of that precipitate new forms of community. And that's what we are."

As a community, I urge you to get on the internet and save Black Rock City.

It's been spoofed on Family Guy, American Dad, Simpsons, and now that fucking ass-ramming Malcolm. That's the worst show on tv.

Somebody watches Fox for more than sports coverage?
I'm glad my life is not that boring.

But it's boring enough to watch sports (much less coverage of sports?)

And in response to the so-called and self-appointed BRC-CC (Black Rock City Community Council):

Your misplaced modifier is quite telling:

You're the community, are you? How many people you got in there? I assume you meant "I urge you to get on the internet as a community and save Black Rock City." Telling, though.

But I agree. We must save the community. From uptight, sanctimonious dogmatists. Anyone know where we can find some of those? We can start at http://www.savebrc.org

Give me some Stanley

It was great. Give me some "Stanley". Somebody over on Tribe posted some of the script and the descriptions of "what Burning Man is" were surprisingly fair.

Of course not. It was a TV show, silly, nobody expected it to be ACCURATE. NOTE: People don't watch Malcom in the Middle for accurate portrayals of real life stuff or real useful information. I am pretty well sure that even people who have never been to Burning Man would understand that what they see on Malcom in the Middle is comedy. Why in the world would anyone even begin to expect it to be accurate? That would be silly.

AntiM suggested (and I think she's probably on to something) that it was written as a rebar injury (all too common) but it was decided that your average viewer wouldn't really understand what rebar was or why it was there, without having to add more informational dialogue than the joke was worth.

I can understand the ire folks are feeling over this. It's always a bit disconcerting when "counter-culture" goes mainstream in any way, shape, or form.
While the "Malcom" people didn't get the physical environment right (Where the fuck did Dewy find those huge rocks?! And did anyone else see the waste station? WTF?!), they did an ok job of representing the community that we build and the friendlieness of most folks in BRC. They also did a pretty good job of illustrating someone who gets it (Lois) versus someone who doesn't (Hal). They could have gone with the popular belief that BM is just a drug filled orgy in the desert, instead they tried to depict us as the generous artists that we are. Sure, they didn't get it spot on, but it could have been far worse.

I do realize that I'm probably setting myself up for eplaya ridicule for defending the show, but I'm pretty sure I can take the heat.

I think we all agree that they could have done a much worse job of portraying BM. But I also think this is a harbinger of things to come. If we excuse Malcolm in the Middle for filming "Burning Man" because they actually put some effort into reproducing BRC accurately we are opening the door for all media to start picking it apart.

It’s not really our door to open or try to keep closed, Burning Man exists and has become a small icon of a cultural movement. Burning Man is “ cool “ and entertainment shows who want to seem cool could well want to try to pocket some of that for themselves. Some will do better jobs than others and those that don’t get it right will get burned by there own sloppiness.

Instead of fearing this wonderful thing we have will be co-opted made popular in the larger society and self-destruct under the weight of it’s own popularity I think we as a community should look on this as an opportunity. Fighting agents being co-opted rarely works anyway. Failing to adapt leads to extinction. Managing change and growth is the only viable way to deal with the pressures of the outside world. By this I don’t mean shutting the gates, by becoming to exclusive you only provide fertile ground for bad imitations of Burning Man to spring up, and they if anything will kill the ideals that make Burning Man what it is.

This may only be a fad, like the Brady Bunch going to the grand canyon, or whatever show going to Hawaii, but it could be more.

I think Burning Man represents many things more and more Americans are finding lacking in there lives, Freedom, creativity, openness, adventure, playful fun, a feeling of acceptance for who they are, community, and even a touch of danger. It offers a challenge to grow, be self reliant, learn, and express ones self , not to mention having something worth expressing. It makes people wake up and think, feel, and accept the world and people around them as they are, and deal with it.

Individualism within community, self reliance with social responsibility, exuberance for life and awareness of mortality, and the temporary nature of things . In many ways Burning Man is a secular religion or at least represents one that can be an alternative to repressive conformity in a sterile prepackaged safety sealed world.

America can not function or become like Burning Man , but Burning man can do a lot it enrich peoples lives, by promoting creativity, individual expression, and community it could even lay the ground work to save the world. Kind of the ultimate humanism.

Just a fucking camping trip in the desert / background for a sit-com. or what the world needs, when it most needs it, time will tell.

The right people are going to get to brc. The wrong ones will to as well, but not everyone that goes to see a band is a fan. I've seen the media portray us every way since 96. We (brc/bm/bm community) are a public figure, and as such, are subject to all kinds of praise/interest/ridicule. Of what I've watched, this show did a better job of "showing what it's about" than any other, but do you really give a fuck what someone else thinks about bm? It's a different event for every individual that goes there.

No, I don’t care what other people think about it as long as they are prepared to be a part of the BM community when they get there. I do care about how well other citizens of BRC are taking care of BRC. I think Malcolm did a fine job of recreating BRC. My fear is that BM is going to start being portrayed as a “Spring Break” type of event by people who don’t do any kind of research and one year there is going to be enough moop on the playa and in the port-a-lets and bikes being stolen and “show me your tits” that the whole thing will be shut down.

I am not saying that there should be no media coverage. That would be tantamount to saying that only people at BM should have freedom of expression. I am not saying that people from every walk of life should not be able to attend. That would be exclusionary and go against what BM is all about. I am just being paranoid and selfish about not having BM to go to. I was welcomed to my first burn this year with open arms and I will welcome all others as well. I just hope Burning Man becomes more a part of society as we know it and not the other way around.

Maybe I have too little faith in humanity.

Well, I've only been nine times, and I thought the show was a hoot and a half.

The size of the event depicted, and its proximity to plants and rocks, reminded me of the 97 burn.

It's not like a lot of people are just going to show up because of this and ruin everything. I hope not anyways. Though there are other problems associated with a big profile... always keep a low profile, that's my motto.

I missed the Malcolm in the Middle Show.... does anyone have a copy, or care to send a copy or a link to me? The altruistic one, or (opportunistic one) can recieve a free hearty massage from me at the next rock infested, cactus laiden beach the kids are all calling Black Rock City.

But seriously, any leads to catchin' it again would be most appreciated, forgive me if I am 1 of many with this request.

Also I love the sheaux, and think the comedy really is for a cross section of comedically evolved folks. I think we want those TV Tubers to join us in the future, some people at The BMF are just too serious.

Burning Man on ER

Post by gyre » Fri Oct 28, 2005 2:40 am

Did anyone catch the line about burning man at the beginning of ER?

I've haven't been so_____________________ since the last burning man festival.

I think I heard that much.

Anybody hear the rest?
