I rode by a bike that had been thrown down. It was right in every ones path. I though, "MAybe I should move it". But then the owner must be close by. I passed the same area about an hour later. A art barge stopped to let a guy off. He jumped down, picked up the bike, waved and yelle "thanks' and jumped on the bike rode away. Other people are robed in there own camp.

Go figure.

An idea I liked but not sure where I saw it, maybe on tribe, maybe here, maybe on the dark side ...

small diameter aircraft cable connected at one end to the bike frame. About 20 to 50 feet of cable. The other end connected to something very sturdy, like the axle of a truck or something. Thief rides off with the bike, gets a little ways away, cable goes taught and the thief gets taught.

An idea I had was for a piece of plastic, say about the size of a license plate mounted on the back of the seat with the letters "BIKE THIEF" cut out of it and illuminated from under the seat with a bulb powered by one of those little tire generators. The thief announces to everyone behind him that he is riding a stolen bike. You announce the existance of this bike widely on any BM forum you can think of and publish exact plans so others can build them too. The community then keeps an eye open for these people and nails them. The bike would have a band on it someplace with the name of the "owner" and their camp and location.

I like the sabotaged seat idea. If it is a foam padded seat, squirting it full of india ink might be fun. A fairly durable stain on skin and clothing. Maybe on the hands too.

Reversing the brake handles might be fun too.

I still like the "short leash" idea best.

Turn the fuckers in

Post by Capt. Ahab » Thu Sep 29, 2005 3:34 am

All though i shudder at the thought of dealing with BLM or other law enforcement I suggest that when anyone ( within your own safety ) catches a dick head in a tent or RV or camp fucking with peoples stuff that they be reported to law enf.- 2 teen age fucks going thru things and they walk away - we must work together - scream for help - unless your afraid of your personal safety get help -chase - persue follow and scream - punching someone in the face for touching a bike - that fuck should be dealt with also. sounds like assault and battery to me.

Wave mage doesn't want clearly defined borders, but that is just what is needed. We do it off-roading and water-skiing. It makes a big difference as far as things just walking off.
It's obvious that locking valuable things up when nobody is around is the right thing to do.
It's also obvious that walking around through people's valuables when nobody is around is the wrong thing to do.
Respecting the boundries of an empty campsite is an ageold thing.

Securing the perimeter of your camp is going to slightly inconvience the people who feel that they should be able to walk any place their heart desires.
It will also make thievery much more difficult and hopefully discourage the thiefs from attending.
Attending to your valuables is part of self-reliance.

I was awake in the rv on friday night at 7:30 and ego, but my boyfrind was sleeping so all the lights where off, I noticed another rv driving through that had a few people jump out and started running through the camps, so I was walked towards the door in the kitchen area in the dark and this guy just opened the door and tried to come in, I was shocked and said what do you want? and all he could say was oh sorry I thought this was my rv and ran back to the girl that was standing by an rv in our camp next to ours and they both took off to the rv that they got out of. All I know is that no matter how fucked up you are, you usually know that you're not in your own rv or tent. I got a good look at this guy, he looked like Merry from the lord of the rings and the girl outside was asian with long black hair to her mid back.

People who are wasted don't go running and jumping in the dark. I hate to say it but your boogeymen sound organized,, but not very smart. You don't put your own RV at risk as a gettaway car. You park it up the road and wait for a transfer. You're lucky that they were stupid enough to bring their rig close enough to wake you up.

I watched a buddy of mine lasso his wife while she was on a dead run. Great party trick.

Wouldn't it be GREAT to nail a thief that way?

That is a good trick. I was Love Parade and a girl was doing some trick roping and I asked her to show me. Man, that stuff is a lot harder than it looks.

You would not need anything real fancy.... Just take a 50,000 volt taser and rig it with a contact switch in the seat.. The split second they sit on it they don't go anywhere with a 50,000 volt jolt up their ass!!! And when you want to ride it just switch the taser off. Incorporate it into the design of your art bike and you could hide it just fine. It could be your personal anti-theft device on your bike and no one needs to know it is there!(Accept the loser that tries to take it from your camp)

Catching a thief is always the problem. Most people give the benefit of the doubt to the thief and just ignore it or shoo him away. He has no risk.

There was a story in the papers about a guy in Oregon who broke into thousands of cars in campsites. On the occasions when he was caught,,,he talked his way out...for years.

"It takes one to know one" Honest people aren't prepared to detect thieves.

As Chai observed, it's very difficult to master the lariat.
Branding sounds good but remember "it doesn't matter what you do,,it only matters what they can prove". Branding leaves a mark.
If you saw the movie "The Cowboy Way" they had a means of extracting info that didn't leave any marks. On second thought I'll leave out the details.
Maybe what's needed is a paintgun shooting balls filled with mercaptan. The smell would make a skunk puke. It wouldn't wash off for weeks.
The problem is that no thief would show up while you were watching. It's murphys law. http://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/trek/4wd/crash.htm

As a last resort, you could leave a bike unlocked where no one would accidently grab it. Cover the hand grips with thick ink. Maybe mix iodine crystals and ammonia and put the precipitate [nitrogen triiodide]on the seat.
Uuhhh, I better leave.

If you are over 45 and sometimes look all over for your glasses, only to discover they are on your head, don't try a security device that requires you to remember to turn it off.
