Facist Burner Demagauge Camp

Post by RagnaRoss » Sun Oct 09, 2005 6:14 am

I'm so sick of hearing everyone moan about the fabled "evil fat frat boys" and the "selling out of burning man" that I think it's time all these snotty whiners should start there own theme complete with a 1984-esq re-education center and "rally-car" art car with a podium for a leader to speak from and seating for 30 or so people to sit and obideintly absorb information.

They could have some kind of mission statement like

"We will wipe the playa clean of the scourge of the evil fratboy scumbag. Burning Man is a festival exclusively designed for beautiful new-age, organic lip balm wearing, Californian electronic music aficianados and NO-ONE-ELSE. Any spectators caught in their wretched non-decadant non-flambouyant attire will be terminated!."

And don't forget to bash all the disgusting men who chase after the critical tits race with their tounges hanging out! They really have no clue about the "true spirit" of burning man!
Here we go into the sea of meaninglessness in the persuit of truth.

Facist...as opposed to Bellyist? Leggist? Assist? :P

What's a Demagauge, anyway? Did you mean "Demi-gauge"? I'm trying to visualize half of a gauge...but then...which half? Is the line horizontal or vertical? Perhaps...dare I even surmise...diagonal???!?! :P :P

One can only guess, I guess.

Whadya know, it is spelled d-e-m-a-g-o-g-u-e. You learn something knew everyday. Must incorperate more strategery when writing inflamitory posts.

Actually, I recommend you run spell check on all your messages before posting (in Word, perhaps?). It is difficult to take rants seriously when every other word is misspelled. Sorry, I have a thing for spelling. I won a spelling bee in the fourth grade and have never gotten over myself.

Say anything long enough and you'll believe it

Post by RagnaRoss » Tue Oct 11, 2005 3:40 am

I think the camp needs some mantra along the lines of "we are beautiful, original, spontanious and Special." They'll need uniforms too, all clad in rainbow versions of prussian uniforms. The re-education center will program captured "spectators" that unlike a frat party, no-one gets drunk, and also unlike a frat party no-one is trying to get laid. That's what sets Burning Man apart as a spiritual experience of peace and community.

RagnaRoss, lordy I agree with you. But uh oh, I am a member of TWO fraternities: ZBT (Zeta Beta Tau at UCSB) and E Clampus Vitus (don't faint BBSue) and everybody knows what an asshole I must therefore be. And the only reason that we do Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro isn't to socialize and give something back to the collective community, but clearly now I see it: We do it to get laid! And By God, some people in our camp have actually met people that they have gotten (and in a few cases) remain committed and amorous with! And at least one marriage has come from this (hi B & E). But oh fuck, we're a bunch of frat boys, sorority chicks (yes, Chi Omega), and other ne'er-do-wells that so many burners would like to ostricize right out of the playa. Oh sure, you'll drink our wine, come to our parties, play with our Barbies, eat our Otter Pops, use our shower, but all the while you are placating us because you know we must be inferior because there are frat boys amongst us! I get it now; next year, we'll just all stay home.

I think your sarcasm is a little bit misdirected. There is good in all of us, that the best part about BM is that it brings that out of us. Specifically, this topic was aimed at the typical, 20-something-MTV-watching-spring-break-forever-I-don't-give-a-fuck-cause-I'm-just-gonna-get-a-job-at-daddy's-firm-anyway-show-up-drink-all-day-golf-cart-riding-non-dressing-up-beastie-boy-frat-boys is who this is aimed at. They don't participate, pick up moop, barter, etc.
I saw quite a few others not dressed up this year as well, especially around center camp, and I didn't get nearly as much barter crap as I have in past years. 'No Spectators' really needs to be emphasized more, especially through the first timers guide(I find it very stale and not very informative of what to actually expect).
One more thing, the beauty of BM is that through dressing up you really don't know anyone's background and a lot of barriers are brought down, but if someone shows up without making an effort at all looking like he just walked off the set of 'Jackass', well...

Ooh Doc I never realized you’ve had to overcome over so much, it’s a miracle,.. a Miracle I tell you!
That even a double frat boy can rise above his former organizationally involved deficiencies to shine as an exemplary Burner. Witch is why even if all this bullshit about ( Frat Boys ) was true, it would provide good reason to welcome them into the community. Jerks are Jerks, some of them grow out of it some of them don’t . Some people need the opportunity to belong to something that has the potential to let the best part of themselves grow and shine,... Like a fraternity or burning man.

God who ever would have thought I would be defending fraternities, when I was in college they represented to me all that had gone wrong with humanity..... I was young and not that enlightened.

Even if people are using ( frat boys) as a short hand way of referring to a stereotype of another kind of person, it’s as distasteful and offensive as using derogatory ethnic slurs.

Any time you focus on the stereotyped ( other ) to help define yourselves and the appropriate behavior required to be ( one of us ), it belittles both sides of the line your trying to draw. it breeds division , hate, and the terrine of a code of conformity. I thought that was what burning man was about getting rid of.

I'm all about

Post by RagnaRoss » Tue Oct 11, 2005 10:55 pm

The whole reason I started this whole meme is because two weeks ago i met this burner girl with this repulsive personality and seemed to believe that BM was only for a very select group of people that did not include "fat frat boys" or "hippies." I just thought that types like her could have there own special spot where there could gather and justify their existance togather and hate on all us hippies and frat boys. BM is for everyone that makes the trip, pays for a ticket (and a few that don't), and behaves and respects other peoples boundries. I did a speech about BM for my public speaking class this last spring at collage and sparked the interest of one chubby Pi Kappa Alpha president while he was sporting his Bush/Cheney '04 t-shirt! Anyone who thinks this guy shouldn't be allowed to give BM a shot needs spanked with leather flogger by someone they don't like the looks of.

That being the case I commend your effort.

I do understand the problems and complaints a lot of burners have with others behaviors , and the fear that the good things they have found at Burning Man will be lost to those who don’t seem to give a dam about anything but there own belligerent good times. Like I’ve said before some jerks will always be jerks, but a lot of the problems seem to happen because of a failure of the community to acculturate the new comers.

That doesn’t mean just yelling at someone they perceive as an “ Evil Doer” but teaching through example, and sharing some of your time to explaining why you have issue with the others actions. Keep in mind as similar as burning man is to a cult, it isn’t a cult with a monolithic culture it’s a community, with a dynamic culture that includes all kinds . As a living culture it is always in flux, always questioning what it is , what it values, what it wants to be. The debate is a good thing it keep the community vibrant and in it’s self serves to create community.

Some new advice/rules for the first timers guide:

1-Stop worrying about the dust!

2-Don't assume a costume makes you or anyone else cool.

3-Don't assume a lack of costume makes someone uncool. What if they're dressed (in costume) as a frat boy? Ooh, there's an idea- organize a "critical frat" parade! Everyone put your cap on backwards, wear a college sports shirt, drink cheap bad beer & scream "Whoooo!" a lot. Ride bikes and follow critical tits around.

4-That's not an art car.

I suggest upping the ticket price too $675 and having a background check on all burners.

Not all "Frat Boys" at BM belong to Fraternities, and not all members of Fraternities are "Frat Boys" at BM. There is no direct causality. I like the F.R.A.T. term, for this very reason.

Now, if we want to start speaking in broad sweeping generalizations...
