The Necessary Beggar

Post by foolsfolly » Sun Oct 30, 2005 12:49 am

So, in a regular trip to the library to look for some new reading material I pick up this book, The Necessary Beggar by Susan Palwick. The dust jacket says it's about this family exiled from another dimension that ends up in the NV desert in our near future. I decide to read it cuz of that connection. As I'm reading about the desert they land in I'm thinking Black Rock Desert and lo and behold the author tells us they are outside Gerlach. Later they're in Winnemucca. I'm wondering if Susan Palwick is a burner. She does teach at University of NV, Reno, so maybe she knows the area and is writing what she knows.
But then it clicks in. The place the refugee family is from is called Gandiffri, which translates as the Land of Gifts.
Coincidence? Anyone know Suasn Palwick or if she is a burner?

Flying in Place is a fantastic book. Makes me cry every time. I'll keep an eye out for this new one and I'm glad she's still writing...
