Overused Music on the Playa?

Post by Ugly Dougly » Thu Nov 03, 2005 9:57 am

Although I love the album, Peter Gabriel's Passion is for me the most over-used music on the playa. Everone was playing it last time I was on the sand. Now when I hear it, I have no choice but to think of BM.

Anyone?

I think there's WAY too much bluegrass, folk and classical music at Burning Man. GOD, what I'd give to hear just a LITTLE techno now and then....

As a (rock/blues) musician myself, I love all of the music of Burning Man whether it's the percussion at the Temple Burn, the raves at 10:00, the Burning Band, Soul in the Machine or Jelly from Go Fuck Yourself standing on my structure with his cheapo electric guitar plugged into his two bullhorns.

It is what it is. For me it's not what's coming from a set of speakers or the passing, rolling rave, but the unique sonic mixture of all of it and the little natural effects you forget about like doppler shift from a party barge that's passing by or the rhythmic nodes you experience on the playa where all of of the combined music mixes together in a unique and transient polyrhythmic moment.

But the topic brings to mind a couple of experiments: What would happen if there was nothing belonging to, say, Sony played on the playa? What would happen if there was no major-label music? What would happen if there was no recorded music at all except the vinyl that the DJs spin?

What would happen if, at some given time, everybody simply turned off music altogether for an hour?

The Mutaytor approaches something of the "official" Burning Man sound...featured heavily in Beyond Black Rock, for example, but when you see one of their performances it becomes abundantly clear why. We didn't play them through our system 'cause we figured a hundred other camps would be, but, I own everything they've released and haven't grown remotely tired of it; it reminds me of Black Rock City.

Confession: Before this year I'd never heard of Paul Oakenfold. Since then I've downloaded a bunch of it and have been trying to determine which albums to get.

Lastly, a friend said Sting was in her yoga group a couple of times. Anybody else know anything about it?

I never tire of hearing live music on playa, but overused? I'd vote for anything described as "house".

Drum & Bass.

Some of us prefer vocal trance.

I heard a LOT of breakbeats this year (perhaps because the only time I left camp was at night). But then I like breakbeats. I thought I had a point.
It's what you make it.

the 'booong' tone is way to resonant for any of those cheap ass hippie drums to achieve.

Theivory Corporation. I made a setlist of teh week on paper, and TC comes up several times. Therye good, but not that good....

I love the mix. I love Bluegrass Music, but I prefer to hear it at Hgh Sierra and not a t Buring Man. A little taste is nice, if at all.

My favorite stuff was the pop song mix ups. I love the new trancy versions of old songs.

I liked every single note of music I heard last year with the exception of pretty much everything the Vegas campers next to us would play every morning. I'm not even sure how to classify it... sort of crooning lounge soft rock music....what a terrible way to wake up each day.
Oh, and also the hour long Madonna techno remix someone blasted around 4 am one night.

There was one camp that seemed to have a huge dance area with really loud music .... and not a single soul dancing at their camp. Just saw 3 or 4 guys drinking beer near the speakers. I think it was either on the 4:30 or 4:00 radial and somewhere around "B".

I remember thinking that it seemed odd that nobody was there because no matter what kind of music you play at Burning Man, there is going to be someone that shares that taste in music. You could probably gather a couple of dozen just listening to dripping water.

Stuart, you rule -
as for the "what should be played more" thread, i'm posting here due to laziness:
i will be bringing yet more altered versions of:
WING vs. GOLDEN THROATS, which drives away the posers without fail -
i throw a little klaus nomi in there as well...........

I'm agreeing with the notion that I hear too much music that isn't live. Less canned stuff, more human produced stuff would be my put.

Still waiting for Polka Camp. Okay, still waiting to win the lottery and gifting the whole damn event with Brave Combo. Even if it means I have to set them up in a vegetarian camp and build them a stage.

I agree. That's why we're bringing our own live music this year.

There's too much dance based electronic in general of whichever variety. Not enough ambient, experimental, noise, glitch, IDM, or anything else that doesn't derive from a standard 4/4 funk rooted drum beat.

Plus we need jazz! Bring the bop, modal, free, and avant garde I say!
We are the facilitators of our own creative evolution.

I just saw them live and it was a jaw-dropping infectious experience a lot of people in San Francisco. They brought 3 toasters, two female singers, live bass, congas, timbales, and the two boys on the electronics. I want more more more and I want them live but I'll take it canned like a cold PBR any day on the playa.
