WHat I find interesting, tho, is *I* post in Russian and it works. No funky code, no nothing - standard cyrillic. Why is it then their "messages" come thru as garbage? That's what makes me think it's corrupt code rather than a genuine message...

Has anyone looked at many of the new people signing up? If you do you'll find wonderful profiles like this:

If it's not the Russians it's bogus socks like this guy. I know the admins are swamped but perhaps it's time to consider moderator / admin approval of new people to screen this sort of stuff out? I don't know how well the idea will go over but with all these accounts being created and based on what's already happened with some of them....I betcha this will become a big problem before long. Is this a good idea, is there something better out there? Or does everyone feel this is not a problem yet?

What's already happened with them, K? Are there spam posts that need to be removed? Just point me to them. I get it that you are hoping we'll monitor every signed up account for commercial urls in their profile, but that's not realistic at this time.Kinetic IV wrote:I don't know how well the idea will go over but with all these accounts being created and based on what's already happened with some of them....I betcha this will become a big problem before long. Should we point theses out as they are being made in the newest registered user field?
Or do they need to be posting in a thread? I see when no registered users are on line they will log in and just sit there. Waiting? Maybe they where waiting for all the guests to click on their URL. When a registered user comes on poof their gone. Yes… I was hidden.
When a new real registered user comes in the field the commercial info is lost in the sea of users. It makes it Hard to find them in the pile. I don’t click on their URL at all. If they get no response to their work then it becomes a wasted resource for them. Won’t stop it but maybe it will slow it down.
Yes... I had my web site on my profile when I first came here. But removed it after more reading. I did it out of respect for this site and other users. Due to my site is for my income.
I just want to help. Please tell me how I can.

I understand that we can't really delete every obviously fake person who's here to promote a marginal website, but I'd like it if we could report them to admin and have them removed.

I understand the desire to be "hypercautious" about this...however let's look at this from another perspective. The TOS has this to say:
#5: Non Commercial Use by Members. The Eplaya is for the personal use of individual Members only and may not be used in connection with any commercial endeavors. Organizations, companies, and/or businesses may not become Members and may not use the Eplaya for any purpose.
From Section 7e:
upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail," "chain letters," or any other form of unsolicitedmass mailing or "spamming";
(The part on advertising and promo stuff is what I wanted to highlight.)
upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that displays pornographic or sexually explicit material of any kind;
(This covers the porn listings)
Wrapping it up the way I see it is the admins have all the authority they need right there in the TOS to boot these people. If someone's worried about a potential abuse of power the admin can do a quick screen capture or cut and paste of the profile screen with the offending links, post it in case studies and say it's gone and be done with it. But with the ongoing flood of these accounts I feel that's a bit much to ask. Anyhow what does everyone think about this? Can Emily and other eplaya authorities be granted permission to boot these accounts? I'd say yes.

Regarding sycophantic drivel
This is the kind of sycophantic drivel that only lends to the further stagnation of the 'Project'. Not to detract from the Admin's effort, but the reality to administrating this BBS is that it requires only a few minutes of effort every other day.Mozy bonz wrote:thank you , emily for the work you do for us.
thats all I don't need anything... just a big thanks. (11/16/05)
Certainly, we can be appreciative of those who 'give their time' to the Burning Man Project. But it's this kind of cheap and servile language quoted above that contributes to the nefarious cults of personality that have already plagued the BMORG for years: Many people come to 'volunteer' for the BMORG simply because they crave the self-anointed attention of pseudo-eminence; And their motives are selfish, ensconcing themselves into positions where they often deny other volunteers who might want to contribute, the opportunity for participation into the growth and development of a better BBS or web site, hence the stagnation in this BBS and web site that we are experiencing today.
This sycophantic drivel serves only to posture its author's own apparent pseudo-selflessness while flattering the establishment. The gratitude is empty and vague and yet allows its author the posturing of being on the "in". If this person really intends to be helpful, he or she could develop some constructive criticism, suitable for a 'Case Studies' thread that might actually lend to the continued evolution of this board instead of just merely kissing ass.
Sincerely yours,
Captain Fuckwit

Re: Regarding sycophantic drivel
Let me get you right, so please correct me if I dont.Captain Fuckwit wrote: ...Many people come to 'volunteer' for the BMORG simply because they crave the self-anointed attention of pseudo-eminence; And their motives are selfish, ensconcing themselves into positions where they often deny other volunteers who might want to contribute, the opportunity for participation into the growth and development of a better BBS or web site, hence the stagnation in this BBS and web site that we are experiencing today.
How does Emily crave this? I dont see it, never have - so please give me examples or I will be inclined to think this is another sociopathic rant. She mostly works behind the scenes doing work that never gets noticed or even heard of, that does not 'fit' into your description. She has done this for years with little to no recognition or reward.
Or maybe you are referring to someone else... are other volunteers keeping people from contributing to this site? Who? And how are they doing this?
