I'm saving up $220 for the ticket. They say that it costs the ORG $212 per participant to put the shindig on, so I figured that'd be a good benchmark in terms of ticket price. I'm kicking in a few extra dollars to help the Potty Fairies buy a macerator.

I'm also going to invest a $1000 or so into getting a trailer to haul my gear in, leave the car for personnel transport. I'm budgeting about $65 for my food and $30 for water. I get my giftable materials from Freecycle mostly so there's no real budget for that. I'll probably invest $100 in costume materials and incidentals, like I'll see something and go, "Ooh! That'd be perfect for the Playa!"

Gas is covered...

I usually bring some "Oh Shit! Don't Panic!" money in case something unexpected comes up.

Basically I'm guessing this year's Burn budget is $1600, with a thousand of that reflected in the trailer. But like I said, that's an investment which will pay for itself over several years' time. Everything else is taken care of because I've been to seven Burns already and pretty much have my infrastructure down. Your Mileage WILL Vary.

No idea about the average ticket price but I do know that the earlier you buy your ticket, the chepaer it is (check Burningman.org often).

Your other expenses depend on how you're getting there (e.g., drive your car vs. ride share vs. fly in vs. rent an RV in your home town and drive up). Do you know how you're getting there yet?

I like to think $100 a month through the year, not counting camp dues and fees.

Then there's my "special projects" budget, which isn't counted in that. That number is classified, tho...

And since you're coming from Ontario, your single biggest expense might end up being GAS. I spent about $500 roundtrip, from West Michigan, driving a fully stuffed Honda Element. Don't go crazy on your food budget your first time out- You'll probably be surprised at how too-busy-to-eat-and-not-hungry-anyway you are. I always have something to give to the DPW at week's end.

I drive an RV with trailer from central California and still buy much of my food/water/fuel in Reno. It keeps me from lugging the extra weight over Donner Pass.

Yes, it will involve a trip into Reno. We always did our grocery shopping at Winco Food Warehouse because they're cheap and open 24 hours. Simply Water is on the way and we got our dry ice at Scolari's.

Or dumped some of the extras earlier. Or hadn't listened to a con man like Fremont. Or not been so snappy with each other. Or had read the survival guide... When you read up on these folks you sort of realize why they are the only ones of all those wagon trails...a huge run of bad luck.

I don't understand all the fuss about the modern day Donner Pass. Now back in the wagon and railroad days it was something else. And with snow...that's another story entirely...the snow fall there is legendary. But late August / early September that's not a hard drive and yeah I've done it with a loaded trailer. I just don't understand why everyone thinks it's so big and bad. Now I-70 climbing up to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado at 11,006 ft...that's a tough run.

My wife is a Murphy, so we photographed her trying to eat herself. (Of course, if she could do that she'd probably still be a Murphy.)

By the way, a sick joke to play at fancy restaurants where you have to put your name on the list is to put down "Donner" and add an extra person.

That way, if you have to wait a long time and they finally call out "Donner, party of six" you can loudly reply "There's only five of us now. We're pretty hungry..." (Often as not, the host won't get it.)

I've never been able to go for under $1500. First off is the ticket price, say $200.
Then camping supplies-When your there you realize how cheap your shit actually is and how ill prepaired you are for the event in terms of wind and shade. My carpot cost $200. Stove $50. Generator $900. 3 tires for the tent trailer I already had $150. Fixing lights on said trailer $90. Pots, pans, plates and stuff $40. Cool and fun clothes to wear $100+. Misc. camp stuff (shower, lanterns, flashlights, rope, stakes, etc) $250 (it adds up).
Illegal Party favors (dont plan on getting them there) $60-$350. Gas was $500 for me coming from L.A. Ice about $30 at the event. Purchased tent trailer last year, used for burn twice, so cost was $500/trip. Making your shower structure $60. Coolers (ones that will work good) $80. Bike $80. Bike Rack $100. Bike lock $18. Lights for bike $30. Chairs $20. Cmaera and film $100. batteries $30. Carwash for after event $12.

you get the idea, it all adds up pretty quick. You'll want shade. you'll want to be warm at night. you'll want to drink water. You'll want to drink something besides water. you'll see everyone else dressed up all fun and wont want to feel like a tourist yourself. you'll see people gifting and will want to do the same.

I say, take out a 2nd mortgage on your house.

What's sad is we're considering purchasing a generator. We camp in Hushville, so we'd never even take the genny to Burning Man, we'd use it for regionals (synorgy, dark skies, winter solstice, suntunnels). Certain in-laws of mine think we're obsessive. No, really.
