But what about the 5 Minutes Hate we have planned for various times throughout the event? Shit, that infringes on our artwork.
Plus, what about all those hate mongers who are participants who have the right to participate in the way they so choose...
Maybe you can do a hate free camp. maybe even get it an official theme camp. But I can't see forcing everyone in BRC to uphold YOUR vision of utopia... just don't work. Lots would (sorry) hate the idea. After all... this is Black Rock City... NOT Berkeley... And hate is not something that is really prevalent there, anyway.
I'm sorry to be disagreeable - but from what I know from my scratch of sociology, it's too bueraucratic and too... P.C.esque, with a touch of "force my will down your throat" added ... to work with this disparate a group, especially considering the demographics of the participants, and that they paid big bucks (for most people, anyway) to be there to be individuals, and to get away from rules like this at home.
I think mandating something like this would change the feel of the event, and not for the better... regardless of the eglitarian intent. Sorry...

I can just imagine the results of such a declaration; dozens of camps set up with hate signs. The folks at Gigsville changing who they hate day by day or even hour by hour, with a big neon sign informing you of the current hated group; which, I am sure, would include everyone living in Gigsville at least now and again.
Actually might be kind of fun, I get this mental image of guys from Jiffy Lube going out super nelly and throwing clods at homos. On the other hand it might inflame the old passions between the Santas and the clowns, maybe the Santas and clowns could unite to beat up the bunnies.
All in all, not a good idea.

I like playing with fire.
I hate all the cheapjack art I see out there. I hate the pyramid O'Pooh. I hate the dust and I hate the wind. I hate the trinkets. I hate the tequila and I hate the warm canned beer. I hate the nudity. I hate the implacable sun. I hate the pesence of law enforcement. I hate the lawless frontier feeling. I hate the long drive and I hate the short stay. I hate the high price of tickets and I hate to go away. I hate the way they force us to have fun. I hate the sense that this is my last one. I hate the lack of appetite. I hate that I can't sleep. I hate the 4am coldness.
I hate the fact that I can't finsish this list before I have to go away.

Hate's an emotion, no better or worse than any other...simply one of the panoply of feelings that coat our lives.
Everyone hates something
Some people even hate hate.
But it's not bannable or removable
It just is.
And trying to make rules and declarations to control things neither you nor anyone have any way of controlling just makes you look silly
And I bet you'd hate that.....

Now you are making no-sense.
But, the parody is good and that is were it should stay.
But when people bring up that BM is a segregated white mid to upher class we can say that's bullshit, We're a designated No-Hate community! So what the hell do you mean and where do you get off writing an article like that!"
Just saying, I hate this and I hate that" is alot different then saying, I hate those Nigger's and them Jews and I'm putting up my sign of hate and then going out to kick some queer ass or poison some pagan bitch and rape here.
Nothing is going to change much within the community because we are really an open minded freely accepting people and violent hate is pretty much non-existent here. It's more a label but it means alot to many people.

But, you know what, Apollonaris?
The people that write articles about BM being a too-white event are going to write them no matter what you do. BM isn't racially discriminatory. It never has been. Some of the most open minds on this planet are at BRC every year.
And still these stupid things get written.
They want you to be discomfitted by their nonsense. They want you make some gesture---a gesture that will have no effect on the population and thus be thrown in your face next year, when the next article is written
"Grand Plan does nothing to stem racism at Burning Man"
And now it will appear as if Burning Man tried--and failed-- to combat this ridiculous, non-existent racism on the playa.
The people who leap on this issue, year after year, should be told, in no uncertain terms to go fuck themselves.
NO ONE is kept off the playa because of the color of their skins.

Back in (I believe it was) 2002 an at-that-time-frequent poster to this thread who went by the moniker of Oxean (pronounced Ocean, go figure) and I got into an argument because I felt some people were ragging on me and my campmates at Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro because death camps are the embodiment of hate. Well Oxeon comes along and pokes at that, but also then goes into a rather incoherent diatribe on the victimization of homosexuals and that Hitler hated them as well and why can't we all just get along, blah blah blah. It was then that it dawned on me that, sadly, the age-old art of simply making fun of people who are different than you was verbotin. Here I am bald, Jewish, and playing with dollies out in the desert and I never had a problem with my fellow denizens of Black Rock City making fun of me, but make one joke at the expense of Jiffy Lube and the whole P.C. gestapo jumps down your throat. The irony of the whole thing is that, the next year in the desert, when I met Oxeon, we actually liked one another. Go figure.
I disagree. As far as I know there has been no attempt to try anything to combat racism by BM. There's been no attempt because there's been no need. There'll always be folks like A to Z who see phantoms in the shadows, conspiracies in every whisper and the need to regulate/legislate based on perceived threats. Moralizing while ducking from pieces of a falling sky are the hallmark of most folks who'd demand more rules to insure a safer and more predictable world in the midst of chaos. Fortunately, the status quo are often loathe to give it to them. And now it will appear as if Burning Man tried--and failed-- to combat this ridiculous, non-existent racism on the playa.

But... Doc... your Barbies are, for the most part, White. That makes you, by default, a racist. Modeled after a German as I understand. How... um... *evil*. >>giggles<<Dr. Pyro wrote:Back in (I believe it was) 2002 an at-that-time-frequent poster to this thread who went by the moniker of Oxean (pronounced Ocean, go figure) and I got into an argument because I felt some people were ragging on me and my campmates at Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro because death camps are the embodiment of hate. I would go way deep into this, but the whole racist crap makes me ill.
You want more non-whites to go to BRC?? Buy tickets, give them away. Spread the word to get people out there. Personally, I think they (who the fuck are "they" anyway?? Maybe I'm one of "they" and... never mind... Grrrr...) have too much sense to go out and spend big bucks to bake in a God-Forsaken desert for a week, but then again, I'm one of the baked ones.
Hugs 2 you,

A german protitute apparently. So Doc will have to convert to the new muslim doll, I suppose. I agree that bm demographics do not reflect the diversity of the U.S. I don't think that's due to racism on the llc's part. Someone, please memorise it and repost it everytime this hoary old topic comes up.

Iso, this is my point--though I was saying that if BM tried to do something to ameliorate it would appear to fail because it would have no effect because it's not really needed--BUT, the people who demanded that gesture would take it's apparent failure as proof of their initial point.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out why this topic is getting so much attention. The only thing I've seen that was offensive to me was the cliquishness of certain people on the playa. But racism? No. Maybe I'm missing something....I don't see this as an issue at all.

I believe the O.P.`s beef is with "hate"... which would be
the PC term that encompasses all of society`s prejudices and pet-peeves.
Surely everyone has something ...or someone that irritates them or provokes an ill reaction from them..
....on a personal note, ...I have been extremely aggravated by, if not outright hateful about - illegal immigrant shitty drivers with no insurance, that plow into you, and are allowed to disappear into the woodwork without a trace... (depending on the outcome of my most recent hateful episode, I may be sharing more of my message of hate at a later date) hmmmm a vast supply of people who could be labled "haters".... for various reasons...
...looks like a job for Super Jesus....or some other righteous soul with an exhilirating sense of self importance.

yeah, and what about those people who artistic expression involves leaving trash on the floor, i think the no moop policy violates their freedom!Bay Bridge Sue wrote:But what about the 5 Minutes Hate we have planned for various times throughout the event? Shit, that infringes on our artwork.

oh and thieves too. the thieves guild's art is involves taking property that isnt their's, i think policys regarding personal property are like, totally archaic and represent far too much bureaucracy...
*sigh*. i'm not *for* this idea (cus um... it's not even really an idea. where is the plan, what would entail making brc "hate free", being that hate exists as a natural by-product of humans...) but seriously. how can you guys hate on this so badly? if someone wants to encourage people not to hate... fair play!
just like everything on the playa, it's a serving suggestion, not a law.
