Crystal Meth is death in white powder form. I've cut off multiple friends who use it, and will continue to cut off anyone I know who starts. I've seen way way too many lives destroyed by it (one of the bad parts of being gay in SF). It's the only drug I feel this way about.
Hows that for TMI?

Met a girl about 5 years ago. I was smitten. SHe said, "I do meth sometimes." My friends said, "Run." I'm glad I did. Her beat-up ass, rusted out car was one clue to her priorities.Eric wrote:"Party and Play"Petalford wrote:ok - lets think sex and try again - saw it posted in craigslist personals

Meth = death.
It's what you make it.

We kidnapped my oldest niece away from a meth addict. Literally went to her workplace, put her in the car, went and got her car at the meth house, then scooped up her stuff from the shithole apartment and wouldn't let her speak to him again. Doesn't sound reasonable to treat a full grown adult that way, but she was pregnant and on the verge of living on the street. He was putting meth in her food trying to get her addicted. We're fairly certain the next step would have been forced prostitution, although she doesn't believe it. She's still pretty naive.

Good for you AntiM. Many people should be allowed to run their own lives,,,,only up to a point. Then the people who care about them have to come in and drag them up out of the shit.
Just as Joel quoted Dylan from "Masters of War" ,,,,,I feel the same way about the people behind the Mexican Mafia's huge push of the meth business.
Unlike Dylan, I don't want to wait for the people behind the meth infection to die. I prefer to kill them.
Our justice system needs some serious overhaul. If I kill 1 person, I get life and do 7 years. If I promote meth labs, I get 20 and do 4.5.
I know a former meth producer. He always got out after a short time. Society would be far better served if the justice system considered the cost to society of a particular crime when it considered sentencing guidelines.
The [more or less] moral people who write our laws have no comprehension of the mentality of the the true predator or psycopath.
Our lawmakers want to salve their collective concience by only using the death openalty for extreme cases. The true psycopath isn't deterred by prision. Our Judeo-christian etthics keep us from instituting punitive measures that are real deterrents. Our prision system is called "catch and release"
The code of Hamurabi and the biblical code of Dueteronomy are draconian, but something has to be done.

Did that scene from high school (to "study") through my service years and 4 years after...
The addiction runs in the family as well... my Brother had it, My daughter had it, my stepsister had it... We're all clean for now, but it *still* haunts us. It's the one drug that literally scares the hell out of me. Worse than H, worse than Tobacco, worse than religious cultists, worse than... well, you get the idea.
I can pick out a tweaker from a mile away. I *still* have aftereffects from it after 20 years clean, both physical and mental. Some hurt bad - like not being able to have had kids since my daughter was born and the physical shit that went with *that* scene. Some are a hassle - the shakes, the rage, the bullshit. It is literally the road to death in a nasty sorta way, and it makes me sadder than you can know to see someone in it's clutches. I will do almost anything to try to get someone who's using to break the cycle... anything short of risking myself. Usually.
They say 1 in 1000 can get away from it and not look back. If this is really true (somoene else said it, not me) I consider myself lucky.
Now you know something I don't tell most people. For some reason, it just seemed right to out myself. Hope you don't mind... after all, you're all family...
From beyond the edge..

20 years clean is not luck Sue- it's inner strength and determination. It says a great deal about you, and that is a very positive thing.Bay Bridge Sue wrote:They say 1 in 1000 can get away from it and not look back. If this is really true (somoene else said it, not me) I consider myself lucky.
Knowing you've had the strength to make it gives me hope for some of the Lost in my life- maybe some of them will be able to break free. Though in the last decade I've only had one friend clean up and become productive again without backsliding, so I may already have that one in a thousand.

My thought is this - if I can make those odds 2 in 1000 I've done well! >>grins<<Eric wrote:20 years clean is not luck Sue- it's inner strength and determination. It's not really 20 years clean. It's a whole metric s**tload of one days at a time... sometimes one hour (or minute or second) at a time. They just all added up to that. It's just not going down the hill to where the dealers are... you ready for reality? It's still (20 years later) as close as that. I *still* think about it. It's the memories - and the 20 years I have that I wouldn't have otherwise - that keep me from dropping that $20 and starting all over again. And the picture I have of me back then. That, and those who are my family, which (for some wierd-ass reason) make me want to stick around. Like y'all. >>grins<<
There's a something there... I can't quantify it - that isn't like antything else. I can drink like a fish and be OK (some know this! >giggles<), I can do other "things" and be OK on Monday (or whenever) or do them once and walk away... but meth is an irresistable thing that will grab my arm and drag me into an alley and rape me until I am dead dead dead... and, but for whatever keeps me from it, I would go willingly, knowing what it's evilness is...
Sorry for the graphic-ness, but I can't express it any other way. Crazy s**t, huh?? Strength and determination? Maybe. I don't know WHAT it is, I'm just grateful whatever IT is, I got some of it!! >>grins<<
Hugs 2 you...

I'm waiting for the environmental movement to get its claws into meth. We have some houses right across the highway in Springfield that are "cleaned up" meth labs. Emphasis on the quotes. Anyway, the cops bust them, they get "cleaned up," and rented/sold to people.
Ten years later, the people living in the houses get cancer. House gets inspected and is found to be a fucking Superfund site.
Personally, I think that once a house is turned into a meth lab, it should be razed and the Hazmat teams sent in.
Edit: On to the question...

LMAO is "Laughing My Ass Off."

It saddens me that my lovely West Michigan is a HUGE hotspot for meth production...When we lived in Van Buren county we would witness the raids (and fires!) with alarming frequency. Michigan ALREADY has plenty of superfund sites, without idiots playing with red phosphorous and ammonia.

Whoaa, I seem to have missed out on a whole chapter. When coke was big, I abstained. I was afraid that I might like it.
I watched a gorgeous and extremely intelligent aquaintance turn into a coke-whore. That was enough to affirm my mistrust of chemicals. Weed messes up my stomach and I am NOT a person who should drink. I ended up being a party-pooper,,,,but a clean party pooper.
I recently read about the dopamine cycle and how meth affects the brain.
I can understand how "clean" is a day to day effort. I have no way to relate.
I think that there would be far less meth problem if they just burned the crack houses,,,,with the crack dealers inside. No one deals H or crack without knowing the annihiliation of body and brain that it causes. If a person willingly chooses to destroy the lives of others,,,repay in kind.
Screw the "Ivory Tower" politicians. Let the reformed hard core criminals write our penal code. They know what it takes to punish people who have made the decision to prey on society. There is no justifiable reason to preserve the lives of individuals who are willing to destroy others 1 dime bag at a time.
Why should society pay 26 K a year to incarcerate irredeemable garbage?
Personally, I suspect that the Gov facilitates drug distribution to cause a refining process in our populace. The US and EU could convert Afghanistan away from poppies into other crops for far less money than it costs to deal with opiate addioction. Chemical Eugenics???

I'm almost getting a case of the warm fuzzies reading this. Sometimes this board is so accepting of drugs. I haven't had a whole lot of contact with methheads, but I don't treasure what I have had. I've also seen some ugly overdoses that can still knot my stomach when I remember. It's nice to see a less than completely sunny evaulation of chemicals here.

Sadly, you're not alone there. I spent 3 years awake, and lost my marriage, my kids, my home, and my job. Not to mention my sense of self preservation, my self esteem, my dignity and my mind. That shit is EVIL in ways I wish I had never experienced. I count myself lucky to be off that shit and have my life back.

I'm in the same boat on this one. I'm a very firm believer that the current drug laws cause much more harm than good, but meth is a hard one to wrap my head around on.regionalchaos wrote:In general I think that drugs should be legalized and controlled, instead of outlawed so that the black market controls them. Meth however.... Meth is the drug that makes me re-think that attitude.
Con (reasons not to legalize):
The stuff is murder. Plain and simple.
Addictive as hell. Destructive of the majority of the people who use it (in my experience).
Pro (reasons to legalize if other drugs become legal)
Manufactured safely- no meth labs in apartments or the house next door.
Cleaner drugs (same with all chemical drugs- coke, acid, e......)- if it's made under safe conditions, the end product will be "safer"- ie, less likely to have really noxious shit in it (I know this point is pretty much moot with meth, as it itself is pretty toxic)
Could be regulated, and users would know what amount they were taking, much like anyone knows a beer has less alcohol than vodka, a "type 1" meth might have more pure meth than a "type 6", giving addicts a way to control their addiction.
I don't know that any of those "pro" reasons trump the fact that meth utterly destroys lives. In my heart and my reality they don't, but I still have trouble justifying (in my head) my liberality on other drugs and not this one when it comes to the laws.
How I wish the shit had never been invented, and how I thank my lucky stars that I was able to try it once and step away without getting trapped by it.
Sorry, babbling.
