Effective Online Communication
>> i have offered all including equiptment for not only the past month but since 1994.
Oops. Missed your earlier post on that. Sorry.
>> still text/journal seems all that most burners want. they dont want music i suppose.
You are only getting feedback from a very small subsection of burners
here. I'm guessing many burners actually would be interested in a radio
station. Don't give up on your vision just based on what a couple folks
here have said.

personally i think what goes on on this borad is perfect for speakie live on internet radio. dont get me wrong....not like in a commercial way even though i think that could work too. but for example the flame throwing can be pretty good in fact in most cases really funny.
also a learning experience.
but all i can contribute is technical. i'm not very good at administrative which seems to be what girlie and III are talking about.

there are 3 aspects to setting up an internet radio station:
- providing the service (servers and streaming, and all that)
- providing the content (music, psa's, etc)
- promoting it (getting listeners).
none of the above require direct llc action, although they provide resources which could be useful for the last point.
i think girlie and i are discussing something web oriented. it'll have the same issues, plus that whole editorial thing. but we expect it to be an unofficial thing as well.

Self fulfilling prophecy

This is why (title of this thread) is important.
Well, if you keep assuming we won't trust you & telling us you don't trust many people yourself, what do you expect?as you probaly aready know and would'nt trust me near anyway.

re: Burning-Man-related Internet "radio" -- I suppose, as has pretty much been said, that people who've actually done radio at Burning Man might be a good source of initial advice, or at least of historical examples and context. The RFBM-- http://www.rfbm.org -- crew, K-Svert-- http://www.k-svert.com, etc. I really can't comment on much, not being in that loop (esp. re: the FCC business this year) and never having stayed in one place long enough at the event to have listened to radio much. Check links at those sites -- some probably have cached excerpts of live broadcasts available. Dusty Balls worked with RFBM a while ago, though he hasn't been to the burn the last couple of years.
And keep in mind that radio at Burning Man has some roots in other subcultures -- listen to KPFA, out of Berkeley-- http://www.kpfa.org/ on Thursday nights for Over the Edge and Puzzling Evidence. Puzzling Evidence keys off the Bob Dobbs / Subgenius thing-- http://www.subgenius.com .
Anyhow, RFBM announces on their site that they'll be at the decompression party this weekend.
Obviously, any high-bandwidth Internet medium would only be effective, community-wise, among those with access. I'm on dial-up at home; while those with DSL/cable/wireless/etc. could certainly get it, many people only have access at the workplace. Among DPW, we can barely rely on email as a reliable method for "effective online communication", and many of those who think nothing of sending huge packet streams across the ether often have to be reminded of this.
Seems the obvious audience (initial, anyway) would be those already geeked into that type of media and with some vested interest in it. As with other Burning-Man-related activities involving bringing a lot of resources together, the focus is usually what gets presented at the event, and the various "radio stations" would more aptly be described as collectives of individuals with common interests doing audio art projects via common means.
Not sure if ya'll are talking about that, or something else, though.

sorry i just could'nt fit into the click.
BM at the beginning was easier for me to deal with because being straight foward was not a problem. my communications over the passed 2 DAYS for others have been as i was told too complicated.
so to make everybody and the clicks happy i will depart for awhile as i've just gotten off the phone and found that i have a few weeks of work ahead.
(i'm sure all are happy)
so i leave you all with this.

works on pc's and unix. not sure about macs. but hey you can't say i did'nt try or have fun.
it's a simple broadcast and i'm sure BM'ers are gonna try harder to do better because they feel they have to.
as i've said always, that's all good.
gotta go and gotta work.
see ya.
