BLM Rule change for Recreational Permits

Post by theCryptofishist » Tue Nov 22, 2005 8:57 am

The complete announcement
SUMMARY: This proposed rule would update the regulations of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) that tell how to obtain recreation permits for commercial recreational operations, competitive events and activities, organized group activities and events, and individual recreational use of special areas.
<snip>
(4) This rule does not raise novel legal or policy issues. It cites new statutory authority that does not have substantially different effects on the program or the public.
As far as I can tell, no big deal, just tightening up cooperation between various agencies and clarifying where fee monies are sent. Still, if you're interested in seeing how the buracracy works, may be worth a look.

The bigger concern is the Pombo legislation to start selling federal (BLM) land to the mining industry and other congloms. You can bet that a lot of real estate in Nevada, California, Colorado and New Mexico would end up on the plate, or should I say in the feeding trough.

Yep. Read about that a few days ago and the first thing I thought of was how it might impact BLM lands near the playa.

...maybe a LLC could be formed to "mine" the resources of the Playa, at least a small part of it...

Does playa dust have any use as a commodity other than to evoke extreme emotional response from burners?

Hmmm mining...

One part Playa
two parts water
toss in some aluminum foil

Hydrogen!

*Starts converting art car to hydrogen*

(I wanted to try this while on the Playa last year, but got side tracked. This should work. Anyone got a handy jar of dust to try this on? :D)

No one is supposed to KNOW that! it's all supposed to be thought of as pure worthless desert wasteland so our friends at Alcoa can buy the land for 2 cents an acre as a "public trust"... and mine it to the largest pit mine in history in a matter of years. Not to mention it'll be so much easier to get the Granite Fox generating plants (20 by 2020 - called the "20 cubed" plan) installed where that hippie drug festival used to be... Then GM can build those new Hydrogen Cars, and sell them at enormous profit...

So... mums the word... the contributors to the RNC and DNC thank you for your assistance keeping the public in the dark.

I just tried it with a teaspoon of playa and a dozen small pieces of foil. No bubbles, but it smells like wet playa (and my cup now has playa mud in it...)

Hmm.. nuts. I know lye works, and was thinking the playa might be basic enough to do the same. oh well... :)

As a "National Conservation Area" the playa itself is probably "safe."
Some find reason for concern.

I once got an invitation to buy into an LLC to buy some land in Arizona. We couldn't live on it but we could camp, hunt, and the title included "mining rights." None of us had the equipment to dig but simply leaning over and picking up a rock on the ground, so the LLC said, could come under the definition of mining if done on a regular basis. A number of people in the LLC were jeweler/crafters and the land being examined for purchase had a wealth of semi-precious stones.

Okay, so playa dust isn't worth much. But the "black rocks," basalt, have some value if you're a crafty type. And I daresay that leaning over and picking up a rock isn't a very high impact, environmental-wise.

You forgot Montana. Our own Congressman Rehberg is the originator of the bill of which Pombo is supporting. Rehberg is a member of the Sage Brush Movement which is a anti-federal (un)Wise Group of ranchers, timber and mining interests looking to take control of government (publicly own lands) lands. He was recently quoted in which in likened his bill to, "selling polluted lands like the Berkely Pit (http://www.mbmg.mtech.edu/env-berkeley.htm) in Butte". He made it sound like selling lands like the pit would be of great relief to the tax payers since they wouldn't have to worry about who gets to foot the bill for its clean up. The Berkley Pit, once the largest manmade hole in the world (a diamond in africa now holds that title) and now the deepest polluted pool in the world, is privately own and is actually worth billons of dollars. The lands that would be sold are worth in the trillions. Since the 1810 mining act allows Royalty-Free mining in federal lands we would really not lose anything, but the conservation movement to change that is gaining force helped by our congressmen wanting to balance the budget deficit with a 5% royalty.

You may recall that a similar bill supporting the selling of federal lands was tried during the Bush 41's administration. It was soundly defeated!

Richard Pombo sez that he's a rancher, but his family is the largest land developer and Real Estate company in the central valley. He is a whore!

Don't know, shortly before I was ready to commit to it I ran into some financial trouble (cough, B'GOC, cough) and the money I was holding aside for it went far, far away Image

You forgot the swan killing appeleation. I thought it was spelled Berkeley, actually and at one time didn't it belong to the Hearst family of Rosebud fame? It's a superfund site, so it must have some federal connection...

Would your rep be willing to open it in its new function as a swimming pool?
