Silver Clay

Post by diane o'thirst » Fri Dec 02, 2005 7:30 pm

I read about silver clay in The Crafts Report and found a site that sells the stuff and all pertinent supplies. They offer it in gold, too.

It requires firing at 1200ºF so you need at least a Hotpot or a torch, but naturally anyone with a kiln could have A LOT of fun with this stuff.

I'm hoping they'll offer copper and/or bronze clay eventually. They'd make a killing and that would seriously rock for us sculptors who don't have access to a foundry.

I buy from PMC Supply but I also buy a lot of stuff from Fire Mountain Gems.

Both are good companies to do business with.
If anyone is looking at small kilns I went with Paragon, they offer a programmable one that offers customized firing sequences. I really like it.

Yeah, Fire Mountain Gems is great. I couldn't believe it when their catalog landed in my mailbox...I thumbed through and my jaw just kept hitting the floor. "SCORE!!!!!"

Can you keep a kiln indoors? Or do you need an outbuilding? If I know my apartment managers they'd probably be edgy about me having a kiln up here in my apartment, though...

If you're torch-firing, make sure you get the right kind of PMC. I think that PMC3 is the one designed to be "easily" fired with a torch. Something like 3-45 minutes, depending on how hot your torch gets.

I haven't used it yet, but thats the one I'm investigating.

Yes, you can keep a kiln indoors. Heat protect the area--there's that cement board wall board stuff for instance. Wallcrete maybe? Also at that point venting becomes important. YOu can use an old stove fan from a remodel apparently. If you can do it in an outbuilding, that may be better. I had a small (6"by6"by6") rapid fire job that I did glass on that I used in the cellar. Have a shed for my kiln that I hope is on its way. You can probably find a local potter and talk about set ups. OR a bead maker. or a glass worker.

I use PMC3 and a Hot Pot, a very small (size of a large coffee can) Kiln for my PMC firing. I use it outside on my steps because it smells chemically when you light it. Google it, easy to find.

I love my and have even use glass in one of my pieces...

I'm going to run over to Georgie's tomorrow and see if they carry it. They probably do, they have everything else...it would at least save me a few dollars in shipping.

Seriously, I *want* to play with this stuff!
