Changes to tribe a boon or bane for eplaya?

Post by MoisturePup » Wed Dec 07, 2005 12:05 pm

Tribe sent me this today because I happen to moderate a tribe that is flagged as "Mature." Personally I enjoy Tribe because it's a social network for adults... but that seems like it's going to change now. The BM tribe is almost 9200 users, and I could see many of them coming back to the eplaya...

Here's the mail I got today:
Hi,

We wanted to drop a note to everybody who currently moderates a “Mature” tribe, because of these important changes coming up on December 20th:

1) We’re implementing Community Flagging. To ensure that all posts are respectful, and to respond to concerns from our users about some of the content on the site being offensive, we’re going to allow members to flag content (photos and listings) for removal. In our judgment, it’s likely that at least some of the photos in the Mature tribe(s) you currently moderate will be flagged for removal by other tribe.net members.

2) We’re updating our Terms of Use (“TOU”). This update is to reflect changes in the legal environment facing us and our members. In particular, posting content that portrays obscenity, pornography, or sexually explicit conduct is for practical purposes illegal for members like ours under U.S. federal law. So it will be prohibited in our TOU, and we will drop the “Mature” designation from your tribe and sitewide.

3) If your tribe currently has “public” status, we’ll be switching it to “private” status on 12/20. This means that only invited members will be able to see any content in it, and any links to content inside the tribe will only work if the user is already a member of your tribe. It also means your tribe will not appear in search results. We’re making the switch for you to give you time to remove all the content that’s in violation of the new TOU. (As a moderator, you will always have the option down the road of switching the status back to public).

What to do now: we suggest you remove all photos that you think are likely to be considered in violation of the new TOU. When you’re done with that, and only then, go to the Manage Tribe page and change the Mature category for your tribe from Mature to whatever seems most appropriate. Doing this now may save you a lot of work down the road, but it is only an option to you before 12/20.

Tribe will always depend on great moderators for remaining a great service, and so we’re grateful for your help as we all go through these changes. If you have questions, we’ll be discussing this online at moderators.tribe.net and tribeideas.tribe.net

Thanks,

Wade Lagrone
VP Marketing, Tribe.net

P.S. If you have so many photos to remove that it’s a big chore, let us know and we’ll figure out a way to help.

Forgive me for being completely retarded but isnt the point of having it flagged as "mature" to inform people that there is explicit content?

Well the more the merrier i say bring em over!

I personally hate that there are so many places to talk about the same thing. However, lots of people like the tribe format better than ePlaya and some people hate both.

No more tribe porn?

I wonder if they consider some boy/girl in panties and fairy wings porn. OTOH, eplaya does not have a gallery section for users to post themselves in their birthday best so it seems a moot point.

I'm sure everything on tribe will work out. After all, they have been doing it for years.

I bet they are trying to please their corperate advertisers.

If too many people leave tribe I'm sure they will drop some of the advertisers that are uncomfortable with the formats.

Well the message was not sent to all moderators of mature groups - I did not get one. We do not have any "mature" photographs and it is not a public site, so maybe that is why....

tribe...I talk to Hindu Deists and nuns over there.......
tribe is just looking after itself in a smart way.......it's such a big place, it's kind of like the universe compared to a planet.

It seems that this is a new law that affects all public boards. Might ePlaya have some difficulty? I've seen some content here (specifically in the Apookoliptika threads) that might cause a raised eyebrow in some circles.

They want to remove all "mature" categories so that they don't have to deal with the BS therein (thank your attorney general).
It's what you make it.

New law? Where'd you hear that? I'm assuming that since they can't get age verification via a credit card for most of their users (which is how porn sites, for example, obstensibly screen out minors) that they're turning to self-policing which is fine. If you want people to see your pics, just host them on your own domain.
It's what you make it.

I think Tribe was completely overwhelmed by the outrage their new policies caused. As of right now Tribe is completely down, it's not even displaying the "We're doing maintenance" page.

yeah..that's too bad tribe is truly a great place. They must have been getting some flak from someone in the justice dept. some of the mature posts had made it into the mainstream media, where I'm sure, they fell under the scrutiny of religious right activists. They'll be back. tribe that is

I wonder if this is what's driving the change?

If that's not it and it's another company rolling over so they can be fucked out of their rights by a bunch of fundies then I hope they don't come back up.
