How do DJs protect their equipment?

Hey, I've been to burning man a few times, but I never took note of how DJs protect their tables from the dust... I remember at BM '02 at Bass Wave Marina, the DJs were behind glass in a large wooden structure. But I'm trying to find out a cheaper way to do it. Any ideas?

I don't think the DJ's behind the glass was a dust preventative measure, and I doubt that would help all that much. Alot of Dj's have beater equiptment that is more suitable for the playa but that is all I know.

I used to try to protect my turntables from the dust but have now given up the cause.

I started off leaving them in my van and spinning from there, then a dome. Finally I ended up just sticking them under a tarp (for the rain) and leaving them otherwise exposed. The real problem I found is that anything that will protec the turntables from dust will also protect you from adequate ventaliation and will bake you to death during the day.

They got less dust in them in the van, but it was about the same in the dome as totally exposed. They have lasted like 5 years and are still running strong so I am under the impression that dust doesn't really mess with them that much.

Keep in mind I dissamble them when I get home and clean the crap out of 'em. Also I have Vestax's and they are built like freaking tanks. I actually dropped one platter first onto the playa from chest hide one time and it's still working fine.

Second day of my first burn I just accepted the dust as a condiment, fashion accessory, and pervasive (yet welcome) friend. It gets everywhere and I'd suppose turntables are no exception to that.

I’ve read much of Sandwichman’s great adviceon keeping the records packed snug and in the cool until the point of use, but can’t find anything specific on cleaning records post playa. I’ve heard different things about the brushes out there, but I cringe enough at the idea of a soft, clean cloth and Naptha. Anybody wanna share thoughts on cleaning, both day to day and post playa?

If your equipment goes to the desert it will get dusty. Our plan for this year is to place the equipment inside the box truck like a DJ booth. and close the door when it's really bad. The truck will be backed up to the dome and the dome cover altered with some tarps.

I'm already dreading what my subs, mids & horns will look like when I get them home.

In the Pharmaceutical biz, there is a thing called a clean room. It has positve air flow, meaning that anytime a door is opened, the inside air (From a pressurized source) pushed outwards noticably. Obviously, this would entail some engineering assistance from greater minds than mine on the subject. You would need to be able to have an interior/exterior barometric pressure differentiometer with adjustable variance. There are
numerous other variables to take into account. Ask the wise ones here, they will give you better ideas perhaps.
