Jumping Stilts?

Post by bdeywoo » Thu Nov 10, 2005 4:50 pm

I found these poweriser stilts that are spring loaded whilst surfing the net and I think i saw some people out on the playa this year with them. Just wondering how they held up in the dirt and were they a good time? They are fairly pricy but seem like a great way to get around the playa quick and certainly in a unique way.

I always thought they seemed like a great way to hurt yourself. I've seen some people do amazing things with those...

I watched a guy jump 10 feet into the air many times in a row and then do flips while wearing these. Very impressive.

Dry wallers wear the short ones. They are the mess of man kind. They never clean there stuff. The stilts seem to last for ever.

My friends have a pair and toured the playa with them. They had a great time, but said they were pretty tiring. just takes getting used to.

Those springs are used to replace lost limbs. Saw a kid playing baseball with one. He could out run most anyone.

poweriser

Post by swampdog » Thu Dec 22, 2005 12:00 pm

Powerisers are not the same as drywall stilts or prosthetics, they are just for fun. skyrunners.com is a good place to find out more. You can also check out poweriser.tribe.net for a community of helpful 'Riser users. I have a pair, they're pretty easy to get started on altho I'm nowhere close to 10 ft jumps or flips. It's a whole lot of fun. When I go to practice in a local park, EVERYONE wants to know what the heck they are. They are surprisingly tiring, I think the better you get the less effort you expend.

Walking on them is (I expect) a lot like walking on stilts. I'm still pretty tentative, I'd want to be pretty certain of my surface before running or jumping, so I'd want to be sure I've got a pretty good stretch of hard packed playa. Since the playa was pretty hard packed this year it was probably great for powerisers.

they look awesome just from that video...

looks difficult and PAINFUL if it goes wrong, though ...

also from the way the actual "feet" are positioned, it would be awesome to dress them up as devil/panpipe-playing goatmen hooves.... assuming you could do that without interferring with the normal mechanism...

Swampdog, have you used skyrunners.com before? I made my order many many weeks ago with them and have gotten no response. I've e-mailed and left messages but no one will contact me. I'm beginning to think i have been hosed here and may need to go to the BBB to complain.

Louise and I saw a guy with goat feet on his at a decompression party a few years ago. He was leaning against a wall resting, by the way. :-\

My boy bought his risers from skyrunners and got them very quickly. We heard good things about them from other riser users too.

It's the incredibly busy holiday season, so maybe it fell through the cracks? I'd call them to do a check on where the shipment is. (or maybe your neighbor is wobbling around his backyard on un-expectedly spring-loaded feet!)

I've had mine for about a year and ordered them from Skyrunner. The guy (Pete) is local to me, so I was able to pick them up. He is a pretty nice guy. They will get to you. You won't be dissappointed. I found mine much the same way you did, and have turned a few of my friends on to them and their deliveries were pretty quick. It must just be the season , I would'nt worry.

Give me a month Ugly and I'm sure I'll have video of myself eating it a couple of times. I found http://www.superdairyboy.com and they shipped them to me this morning, unfortunately they are much hevier on the markup than the other place :( .

sorry!

Post by swampdog » Thu Jan 05, 2006 2:50 pm

Bdeywoo - sorry to hear about your problems wiht Skyrunners. I haven't dealt with them, but the buzz over on poweriser.tribe.net seemed pretty positive.

All in all, it's a pretty flaky business. Powerisers are a Korean knock off of a German original, they may get caught up in legalosities at some point. They don't seem to have a well thought out distribution plan - distributors just seem to pop up here and there. ANd apparently, disappear. I considered trying to be a distributor for them (the Korean mfg), every time I go out in public I could probably sell a pair, but they never returned my email.

You may have good luck with eBay - there seem(ed) to be people who'd get a few pairs and sell them new on eBay. That's where my wife bought mine. SuperDairyBoy seemed to be the most heavily invested in the US.

Good lucK!

(oops, just re-read the thread and realized you have found a pair on SDB. Good luck with the wipe-outs! It's been recommended to practise falling, I haven't been able to convince myself to try that yet!)

Practice falling.....NOOOOOOOOOO I have a problem with that. Not the falling part but getting back up on them. i've had them for a week now and can run jump and balance still but how the heck do I get up after I fall or take them off without a "landing pad" like my car bumper? i dont know if I'm flexible enough.
