I think the more interesting question is how many snarky, cranky pants posts one has to make to be plonked.

Yep. one

but it's the one you post every time you post.

you can always be an ass, you can always be an angel...it just depends on what you say.

it's an e-playa rasa.

am I a chronic lurker? I like 'inveterate'.

I had a name, a long time ago, but I've lost it a few times. Even lost 'lurker' for a while. But I kept it, 'cos I remember where I got it.

Someone, I think it was the rebbi, started a 'lurkers thread' to get the seldom posters talking. I don't remember if it worked, but I liked the sound of it

A Lurker thread sounds like a good idea.

Actually, I'm kinda suprised that the Rebbi has'nt posted here yet.

I guess I am less of a chronic lurker than a "serial" lurker. (Sounds deliciously sinister.)

A transcript of a lurker's thread......

Lurker 1: "_____________"

Lurker 2: "Why don't you put that _______________"

Lurker 3: " You're both ________________"

Maybe a better question would have been:

How many posts must you make before you feel you have the right to claim Seniority?

It's kinda hard to answer this...but since you asked my personal dividing line on credibility comes down to participation. Have you been to BRC? If so and you've just come back and start posting here you've got my attention because you've been there. You rode out the dust storms, you know the ins and outs of the event so many of us love and you're now part of the community. So if you write about event related topics....you've got that "seniority" status and I will pay attention to whatever you write.

Now if you come on here and spout off about board policies and the like and it's been a week I'm going to laugh at that. A few weeks, some time to observe the workings of the board...if you've done that as time goes on you'll get my attention. So to answer your question there is no magic post count number, it's all a bunch of variables that in the end you control. It's how everyone else interacts with you...sorry there's no prepackaged formula to eplaya acceptance available.

One other tangent, some of us were here on the old board way back in the day. Anyone that's been around from those days automatically qualifies.

Blyslv needs to answer his own question as he has me plonked.

I witness a lot of people who have participated for years, throw their credibility right out the window by being so judgemental. Many of them can't agree to disagree. If they don't like what you say then you are a troll or you are baiting them. I feel sorry for them. It may appear that they don't have the ability to function in a society where everyone is not just like them.

Sometimes small things like that can make a difference but they just dont seem to be able to sustain themselves. The intro thread is the only current place spectators feel free to voice out. The whole newb problem is something I tried to wrap my mind around and deal with but never made much progress, wish someone else had more luck.

I think it has some to do with people generally feeling shy in face of the sometimes hostile feelings around here. Or at least that is one of the important things I got answers to from people at the meet and greet.

Post by ravenluv » Fri Jan 13, 2006 2:20 pm

oh no! this begs the question of how many posts must you post before you're no longer a newbie!

i think i'm a newbie.

as for this acceptance question, and the one about seniority...

i accepted your seniority the moment i read your first post. and i still do. it seems the best way.

so why did we come here? why we do stay? these are the great mysteries of bbs and bars.

i read your posts.

and then, either boldly or timidly, i posted myself.

i thought: i'm naive, uninformed...a newbie. i tried at times to pretend i wasn't.

'tis true, i wonder what in the cosmos i've sauntered into.

i kept posting. emotions ran willy-nilly. what are we up to here? this is a strange realm indeed. this is art.

then i think, we're all just birds in the trees, a thousand voices singing at once to the air and the breeze, or at least it would seem, somewhere on another branch in a nearby tree is one who understands our song, this is why we sing.

true story.

i'm not sure.

It could have been the 2 shots of Hennesy after I had the 4 beers or maybe it was the 3 shots of brandy after I had the 2 shots of hennesy.

Anyhoo,

As someone that has been on eplaya now for 3 years I would like to say that I am very very happy to see this mostly new eplayan crew of posters.
So far everyone of the newbies I've seen on this board, even on this thread seems to be of the true burner philosophy. And for anyone that has bumped into OH's that have given newbies a hard way to go on this board, I can say this, most of the ones that complain about some of the dumbest things on this board do not represent most of us on this board that are truly tons of fun.

Just keep on being true. Eventually every eplayan of any substance will have a high post count.

Cabana, you should consider the time on the playa as a growing and learning experience. For the sake of harmony, it's moderated by the Rangers. I believe that most playans and e-playans have an appreciation of the beauty and tranquility of the setting at BRC. They don't go there to have crap shoved in their face. Harmony does not include confrontation.

Creating confrontation just for the sake of confrontation with no learning attached is not productive or harmonious. People prefer not to accept the confrontation or the originator.
They're expressing a preference and you want them to change their preferences. Won't happen.
There's nothing wrong with lurking. I'd prefer that people lurk rather than wing it with foot firmly in mouth. I believe that seniority generally relates to the number of well-thought out ideas one profers rather than the number of letters that appear on the page. Pablum and verbal diarrhea is not an attribute.
Do some reading, bring something to the table. Look at other people's style. Zulagoona is the most analytical thinker, Ms Crypto the most responsive, BBS- the straightest shooter, Mozy Bonz-one of the most empathetic along with Cowboy Angel, Joel is down-to-earth, EDB is the master of the short come-back. DVD doesn't let anything by.

They all bring something to the table and it's NOT confrontation. I've only been here 7or8 months, but nobody has made any big deal of it. You talk about acceptance. People are accepted for who they are. Confrontation is not a who.

I would'nt have a problem with that.

Eplaya for years has needed some new blood. It was getting VERY VERY STALE as I just stated to someone not even 3 days ago.

It's not the fact that the newbs are newbies, ya'll have a refreshing twist. Which I have been trying to implement myself along with a few other eplayans that are no longer here for the past couple of years the kind of energy that you folks are generating these days.

You guys are great. Hope you folks stick around all the way up to the event. It would be nice to see what the eplaya meet and greet will look like.

Why "should" I? So my experience will be exactly like yours and all your friends. That sounds like loads of fun. Do some reading. WTF? Why so I can be just like you? lol. Look at olther people's style. Why so I can post just like them and be just like them? How am I ever going to learn to be self-reliant if I am spending all my time trying to conform. You have me confused.

I am not looking to be accepted. My original post was just a thought I had after reading someone on another post get blasted because he didn't choose his words like people with "Seniority."

I don't create confrontation for the sake of confrontation. I ask questons. I cahllenge people's authority. I challenge people's motive's. I offer my opinion. I am sorry you need to feel that is confrontational. I don't get my feelings hurt.

I think you meant that "your" harmony doesn't include confrontation. Maybe more people agree with that than don't. but I disagree.

Hmm. I went back and looked at everyone that posted on this thread....just the names, not post counts or when they joined. And it seems that with the exception of Blyslv whenever you post I always read it.

Maybe 'cause I'm an old hat I'm blinded to the problem but is this really an issue? The replies don't convince me that it is.

Cabana and CSS are kinda goin at it but it seems like something small and like they'll work it out or blow it off but everyone so far here seems pretty darn cool.

It would be a shame if some OH dead beats want to come here and mess things up.
