minature galleries looking for distribution

Post by kila buni » Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:03 pm

I am looking for some Chicago people or people traveling through Chicago on the way to Burningman to help me with a project. I have put a Call out for Mail art on my website. The theme is "Here and Now". The deadline is mid-June. Once all the artwork has come in I will be making miniature galleries out of cigar boxes. They will show at an event through the artist collective I work with (House of Payne) then I want to ship them of to Burningman. I am looking for individuals or a camp that would be willing to take them to the Black Rock City and distribute them in front of sleeping participant's tents. If you are a Mail artist please check out the call for art.

OK, dumb question, what is mail art? Do you have a picture?

Your project caught my eye because I am an unabashed miniaturist, yes, dollhouses and roomboxes and shadowboxes, and tiny, tiny paintings; even down to 1/144th scale.

I wanna see how it turns out! Sounds great!

It seems mail art is newer than I thought because you are not the only one to ask me this question in the past couple months. So not a stupid question. I was introduced to mail art a couple years ago through a friend of mine, "The Emperor of Ephemora". If he recieves your address he sends you art in the form of writing, magazine clippings, collage, manipulated objects, drawing and well just about aything he can mail to you. This seems to be consistant for the way I've seen others work. Sometimes it's a home made post card. It's really wide open for interpretation as long as it travels through the mail. The "miniature" comes in the form of a cigar box. Each box will be packed with 3-4 pieces of mail art. So when unsuspecting victims recieve their cigar boxes they will be recieving a miniature gallery with art from around the world. The mail art community is an international community, with concentrations in Europe, and the Americas. Here are some great websites.

Check out the call for art on my website. I think miniature work would be great for the galleries.

I like it, and surely can fit a few minis into my now hectic painting schedule. I've promised to bring the Home for Wayweard Art not only to Burning Man again, but to Dark Skies and Synorgy too, so I have to knuckle down and paint like mad.

I'll see what I can do. If painting is my here and now, would that mean self-portraits? Dang, now I have to actually think about something!

Thank you for your excitement. I can't wait to see what you come up with. Who knows you might just wake up one morning to a miniature gallery on your doorstep. By the way all the artwork recieved will also be documented and archived on the website.
