Hey Everyone!

My name is Dion Magistro. I've always had a great appreciation for art and expression and I would love to attend Burning Man this year. You can check out my website if you'd like. I'm always on AIM. I'm also a great cook.

Just felt like signing up to the forums.
I always thought I was the white rabbit. It turns out that rabbits aren't real.

hi!

last year was my first time to burning man, and it was a defining moment in my life. I have never done anything like that before, a few friends asked me to camp with them, and it was nothing at all like i thought it would be-

it felt like i could do more by the time it was all over, so i was wondering, the people who put the event on, do they work there or do they volunteer? how do the theme camp thingys work, are they hard to join, do you have to do an initiation with them? also, the whole gifting thingy, i brought a bunch of these plastic thingys i got, but most people seemed like they didnt like them-is there something better to give out?also, my friends arent going next year, how hard is it to go to burning man by yourself? are there lists of things to bring, so i don't go out there and get in trouble-

i know these are probably dumb questions, but i'm going again next year, i wouldnt miss it for anything, and want to do more, and have more fun (if i can)-

Welcome to e-playa!

Hermione, some of the people are paid, or contracted to work there like the JOTs port-a-potty drivers and water truck drivers, I think, and some of the medical people too ,but for the most part most of the people you see are volunteers.

Camps are formed in various ways, and function in different ways too. Some are loose collections of people who just camp together, they don’t have much if any shared resources so there usually isn’t any camp fees. The more shared resources ( shelter, food, showers, water ) the more the camp fees are in general, and that goes up if your a theme camp building a major work of art, or big attraction, free bar and so on. Some camps are formed regionally, others like the International Burner Hostel include people from around the world. Some camps may have begun as a collection of friends form one location and grown to include people from all over, I think the death-guild began as a group of friends from a bar some place.

Many of the Theme camps have websites or at least e-mail contacts, look on the main Burning Man site under theme camps for descriptions and contacts if your interested. Also the theme camp section of e-playa has threads of camps that might be recruiting new members, or coming up with ideas to form a camp around.

As for what to bring, read the main site, the survivor, guide, every thing, there are or will be people sharing their lists of things here in the Q&A tips and tricks section. volunteering is a good way to become part of the event, and meet people, there is a section on the main site you can volunteer in advance at .

Do a little home work and you’ll have more fun, meet some really cool people and be better off all the way around.

Hello all,

My name is Camille and I have never been to burning man before but I am looking to head over from the UK with a few friends this year. I don't think i'll be participating in a theme camp but I do dabble in some fire dancing, play a little guitar and can teach people origami. However if there is anyone who needs any extra them camp participants I'd be more than happy to help.

I'm a little concerned about the details of getting there. Is it better to travel to Reno or Las Vegas? Would it be easiest to organise a lift share or hire a car? I guess what i'm asking is how realistically available are the lift shares and if that opportunity was to fail would there be other methods of travel?

When you travel into the site using bikes or walking, how do people bring their luggage with them? Is it a far distance away from the car parking area? Should everything brought be able to be carried?

I'm dead set on going and will be spending every week up until the festival preparing what I need to bring but while travelling by plane, this limits the amount of luggage that can be brought. I read in the survival guide that it is important for every individual to bring their own food and water. Water at 1.5 litres a day makes it approximately 10 litres per person. I can't see how someone would be able to carry that much water with them as well as other supplies i.e big tent etc without some serious help.

Anyway, if any of you ppl have any answers to my questions I'll be very greatful as I am determined to be there and need to know which obstacles I face.

Thank you =)

Hi Camille,
I'm also a Brit going for the first time and everything you mentioned is bothering me too. However the water you should be allowing is 1.5 GALLONS per day so roughly 10 pints. I dont know how i'm gonna transport that myself, I was thinking of hiring an RV but thats when it starts to get even more expensive..........

Hey I'm meeegs and I am an Aussie Burner....and will be making the trip to BM for my second year. This year i plan to volunteer as much as possible, maybe as a greeter this year.

I am quite addicted to blowing raspberries on people's stomachs.....there's something very cool about the child=like gut laugh that it produces in the receiver of this wonderful belly blowing activity  .

I have a few months up my sleeve so will be able to help out before and after the Burn, just need to suss out transportation....closer to the time I guess.

I am happy to take in any burners who travel downunder as from what I can see there aren't too many aussie burners around...am in Sydney at the moment.

Looking forward to another fantastic summer up in north america.

big hugs and raspberries

I'd like to be more creative and artistic but i appreciate the fact that i'm different but i love to find ways to incorporate the more atheistic facets of life into my life, and after being introduced at one burning man event i totally fell in love with the people and concept of burning man. I’m going to Xara this year and burning man as well, i'm very very new to this whole thing but would love to participate and help out where needed. if you know anything i can assist with please feel free to let me know. . .

hi, my name is johnny,
i'm an israeli soldier who's very soon getting released, and i've been thinking of going to BM for five years now.
could someone tell me, besides of the things BM has to offer, if I need to settle down in a camp during the night or just lie around wherever I want?
more info would be great too.

Johnny, where you crash out is largly up to you. There are a lot of ambiant chill spaces (domes, tents, art installations, theme camps public spaces, etc..) around where it will likely be somewhat OK for you to sleep at for a little while. But I wouldn't want to bank on doing this every night. There is a lot of benches and chairs at center camp, but it is usually a little to loud and hectic in there to sleep.

There is plenty to do and see at any hour if you don't feel like sleeping. I usually camp with a few massage folk, so we always have a massage table set up in our camp. This last year I definately spent more time sleeping on that table then in my tent.

Shalom Johnny!
Welcome to Eplaya!
You should be able to find answers to your questions by reading the survival guide and the various Q & A threads here. More information than you`ll ever need is here if you do a bit of digging.
I might add that it is a good idea to plan for having a comfortable camp to rest/eat/relax other than that the options are limitless. Just make a good plan and go with it!
good luck and have fun

I round up as many chicks as I can and nest down in my chicken coop, usually on the early side. Gotta get up early for the sunrise and absinthe with the dawn patrol, still up from the night before.

Hi..My name is Dentn. This is going to be my first year at BRC. I've been pouring over the website and gathering as much info as I can retain. Thought the boards would be the next logical step.

I'm from AZ and will be traveling to BM 2006 with 4 other friends, setting up a Chakra/Electronica themed camp w/ live music and video. I'm going to fill out the Theme questionaire once it becomes available online.

Hope to meet many new friends and I know that it's going to be interesting no matter what.

See everyone there.

Illinois Nooby

Post by GregR » Fri Jan 20, 2006 8:06 pm

Hi, I’m Greg and I’m seriously thinking of attending your event for the first time this year. I’ve been a professional muralist for 20 years and want to bring along supplies to create something while I am there. I have an old conversion van that I use as a work truck and was wondering if I will be able to use it for storage and sleeping while I am there. I understand that the vehicles are not to be used during the event, but will it be in a place where I have reasonable access to it? How much space do I get?

I will most likely be traveling to Burning Man by myself. I’m 45 and most of my friends are more concerned about crabgrass than new adventures. I live in the SW sticks of Chicago and would possibly consider taking along a rider. Provided that you have no annoying habits and are completely tolerant of the hundred or more that I have; smoking, swearing, pointing… the list goes on and on.

I have been intrigued about the Burning Man experience since I first heard about it years ago. Just before Christmas I attended a gallery preview party where I was kissed by a fire dancer. After her performance we met on the stairs I complimented her on her show. She didn’t say a word she just gave me a nice kiss and a pretty smile and then disappeared into the crowd. How lovely. I thought, even at the time, that I should take this as a sign to get off my ass and finally check this thing out. I have always felt most comfortable in the presence of other artists and fringe dwellers, and if given the opportunity to show off my skills as a painter, even better. This sounds to me like something I should be a part of, any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Email me if you like at [email protected] You can check out some of my murals at http://rileyart.tripod.com The stuff on my website is all more than 2 years old and most of it is commissioned work where buyer picks the subject matter. If I get to paint something at burning man I am thinking of painting a mural depicting what people thought the future was going to look like in the 1940s.

Welcome home Greg! :D

It's kind of like car camping. There is no seperate parking area. Although there is a walk in only area out on the edge of the city. You'll just drive into a city of chaos and try to find an open space in the gridded out city blocks. It's like urban squating in the desert! A lot of people use their vehicles as shelter or as a sturdy thing to tie a shade structure off of.

Good luck and have fun!

Hi djdentn!!!

and Greg!!

Welcome Home...

Glad you finally made it.

Greg, to your question about the van...

Yes, you can sleep in your van and store your stuff in there too. There are people who sleep in whales, pirate ships, and glowing amoebas, so your van should not be a problem. The only thing you can’t do is drive it around during the event. Once you find a spot, you park it and there it stays.

So with a kiss, your adventure begins. What a great start. Read all you can on this site. Ask questions and don’t worry... there are some really good people hanging around here who will help you all that they can. Check out the Regionals area. Plenty of folks in the Chicago and surrounding areas to hook up with. Stop into the Bar thread from time to time to grab a beer and some good conversation. Hang out on this board and you'll get some good advice for the event.

And until you're on the playa,

Welcome Home.

Thank you for the timely responses, regionalchaos and LeChatNoir,

LeChatNoir, the little photo by your name, is that cat in a box? It reminds me of a poem I wrote some time ago about the physicist Schrodinger and his famous cat box. It's just a wierd experiment of my own with five sylable lines. I don't know if it's any good, but it has a happy ending and I will present it to you here as a gift.

Fun with Physics

Schrödinger’s black cat
Was sealed in his box
The half disc was spun
The photon was fired
He had half a chance
And might not be dead
Until someone looks
He might be alive
The way he is now
Still closed in the box
In-between and strange
Makes scientists glow
Delightful unknown
Hypothetical
Experiments and
Theoretical
Properties describe
Mathematical
Formulas that prove
The state of the cat
Before it is seen
The nature of light
Should now be explained
Photosynthesis
Needs a particle
But for refraction
It must be a wave
Does kitty get fed?
Or dig him a grave?
One happy genius
Has scribbled for days
Calculating true
And checking his work
He figured it out
He ran down the hall
To show the others
They praised him and cheered
Until the wee hours
Then back to the lab
Still feeling giddy
He filed all his work
And turned out the light
He heard a meow
Here kitty kitty

Like the mushroom clouds too, if its not too close, where I live, lol.

However, I could live without, if there would be no more mushroom clouds anymore;I guess we have enough archived material, abandoned islands,
deformed babies and memories, that will never fade away.

Hi, im jeff...but you can call me President Brown, as do all of my freinds. I am 16 and im a halfway Burning man virgin....you see i have been, but i have not experienced nor celebrated the event. I went when i was thirteen with my father(who i have not seen in years). But we only went for one night to watch the man burn. I thought it wasn't right and i plan to make my own trip out this year of 2006 with some freinds. I plan to stay the intire time being that i was fasinated by the event when I was younger. I live about 60 miles away from the black rock in a small hippy redneck town(i don't mean that in a bad way at all) called Imlay neavada. I have been exploring the desert surroundings around me sense i was able. i go out to the black rock every month just for the drive. Even when it is winter and the playa is impassable i make the drive to brunos and eat just for the hell of it...

I and my family come from very irish/scottish roots, i love my heritage and am prideful, greatful, and lucky to be who i am. My favorite color is green(go figure) and i love nature. I love nature so much in fact, i live 15 miles away from my nearest neighbor(imlay). my stepfather owned this 400 acre piece of land that i live on. He had big plans to mine it and spend the rest of his days doing what he truley enjoyed...mining. But, when the mill of the mine was finished. And he had spent all of his savings on it. He became terminally ill and died of cancer. So now, its just me and my 52 year old mother living the mountain life(no power grid, no phone lines) in a cabin....and i couldn't love life any more than i do now, and i hope it never changes.
...vote for brown

Hello everyone,
I decided to buy my Burning Man ticket early so that I don't find excuses as the year progresses not to go. This will be my first time and I am really looking forward to the experience. I will be flying from Montreal to Reno, then hitchhiking or sharing a ride to Burning Man. I would appreciate any ideas of how best to participate. I was thinking of voluteering to help somewhere. I would also be happy to hear from any other single travelers.
Cheers,
