More on the Gigsville CarBQ.
It's a GeoMetro if anybody cares. Here's a few shots of it getting to the playa last year.

Anyway, it is a fireplatform. The whole point of the car is that the floor keeps the really hot part of the fire off the playa. Yes, when the idiots (uninformed, if you prefer) fill it too far, burning embers (or even logs) fall out. However, it takes a lot of heat to leave a burn scar; a burning log isn't going to do it.

So there's a car, up on blocks (it's own wheels actually) keeping an 8" airspace under the car. It's as effective as the other burn platforms out there.

A CarBQ of one sort or another has been there for 4 years now, and the BORG allows it to return each year; if it was leaving big scars, they'd say "no".

There are not enough bullet holes in that vehicle.

I can help fix that...

I had memorable evening there in 2002 carefully peeling the black latex fabric paint that one of Mutaytor's dancers had mistakenly used as full-body paint. Took hours. Was a highlight of my year. Lots of good conversation 'round the car-b-que.

And I'm not one of the cool kids. Go figure.

On second hand, you wouldn't get along with anybody in Gigsville.

there are at least enough, considering that it was acreening around a lakebed in a most unfriendly fashion when we started shooting it.

in fact, it was dangerous enough that no one actually remembered to yell "it's coming right at us!", even though it actually was.

Thanks for explaining the CarBQ concept.

I did have some friends stay in Gigsville so I can't say it's all bad...and of course Precipitate was there and that says a lot. So it's not all bad.

But there were still a few fuckwits in there that made me uncomfortable.

The theme this year was really cool, and I kinda wished I was a part of it.

>>Come by Skynyrd for a drink next year. <snip> Or that Canadian place with the dome (hi Girlie!)

Yo. The Canadians also always have drinks of one sort or another around, and we love to share! In fact, walk on up to any of the forward facing gigsville camps and say "hey, i just thought i'd come by to meet folks around here" and i can guarantee that most folks will be excited to meet you. Hell, walk up and shout "Fuck Gigsville in the Nose" and folks will probably be even more excited to meet you. We're a strange lot.

There is a certain amount of gigsville community pride that i'm guessing people often mistake as pompousness and cliqueishness. We do worry about these things -- we are a pretty self-aware group and talk about this issue amongst ourselves a number of times a year. It is one of our favourite dead horses to beat.

But in the end, since we are a do-ocracy, it is up to each camp to choose for themselves the atmosphere they wish to create. And it is up to each individual in the village to choose for themselves how they present themself as an individual. Though we do chastise each other freely (we are kind of like family that way) our community does not dictate to someone how to act, even if their actions reflect poorly on the community.

Damn. Did i have a point? Um. Maybe just this... one on one most folks in gigsville have always appeared to me as very nice and extremely welcoming. Some folks are not so nice, but some people are into that not-nice vibe. If you aren't into it try to avoid those folks. Or tell them to fuck off. Or, even better, sit with them and get some conversation going. Try to see where they are coming from and try to explain to them how you experience their attitude. Could be interesting.

i would like to give an orangekid thanx to finger, his bro and the rest of the gigsville hoopla for allowing myself, (Jupiter) and my homie Hyjynx to play records for yo asses on friday night. next year i would like to take your entire group out to the man for a session or two of sex, drugs, food, music, fun or drinks, since i fucking missed the burn cause i was partying too hard all week, i would like to at least be as close to the frickin man as possible this year so in case i do pass out, at least my chances of waking during all the magnificent shit i missed are a bit greater than being passed out inside my tent at dogma and dubious... thanks again!

I have also heard that gigsville is pretentious as well but I have been thinkin' the same thing Girlie...

I am proud to be part of Gigsville.
I have been a part since the primordial soup days in 98'...

(IMHO...because I am one of many that is part of gigsville and can only mostly generalize...we're a diverse bunch)

So we have a history as a community on and off the playa...and I think everyone has a sense that their identity is some way connected to gigsville as a group...and also there is a belief that what gigsville as a whole puts out to the world and to playa is a Good Thing...

...as far as "attitude" you might encounter from me or likely from someone else...part of it is because since many of us have been to burning man more than a few times...(my first year was 97')...many of us remember a more often darker dangerous burning man and not "burning man is another rave/love fest burning man"...so I think that there is a bit of angst amoungst us gigsvillians that burning man can be something better as each year that passes... as in "it's my burning man not the BMORGs"...spank you very much...

But either way in the end we are just a bunch of folks who like burning man and for the most part eachother...

BTW Gigsville SUCKS! ;-)

I did not spend much time at gigsville, even though i was camped pretty close. I wish I made it for the beaver eatin contest, last year we got there to late to get in and this year missed completely. Gigsville did have showcase my friend on their stage. He played a 45 minute set on his guitar and even though it was a small crowd of a dozen max, it was great. I forgot about the wind and dust and missing Shiva Las Vegas......

thanks gigsville, hope to visit you more next time!

That's another thing Gigsville is good at: dead horse beating.

Been with gigsville since the start. Never really paid too much attention to any attitude problems.

I'd rather be somewhere with Gigsville than nowhere with most other folks.

I think that if they are in to beating off horses they should take their camp to TJ and pair up with the donky act, ya know.. the one with that lady and err uh ooh um I think I'll shut up now, I really know nothing about a donkey act in Mexico.
