I'm new here and would like more info please.

Post by smatejov » Sun Jan 29, 2006 9:49 pm

I want to go to this years Burning Man. I just found out there are tickets to be purchased. I looked all over the site and cannot find infor about what the ticket entitles you to do. Where do you stay? Do you actually camp out on the Playa? Just what is the Playa? Can you drive onto the Playa? What do you bring with you for the whole week?
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thank you all!

hiya darlin!

start by reading this: http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/

and basically your ticket allows you into the event. period. you are responsible for your shelter, food, water, clothing, and for participating in your own experience.

read that, and then keep reading here....read "This Is Burning Man" by Doherty. find burners near you who can tell you about it.

enjoy!

The ticket entitles you to admission. If you want food, you'll need to bring some. Water? Bring it. Shade? Bring that, too.

See the first timers' guide at http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/ and preparation at http://www.burningman.com/preparation/

As for what the playa is, see all three pages of pictures at http://civex.smugmug.com/gallery/1090971

You'll love it.

Haven't been either, but I'll try to answer:

Where do you stay? You can try to camp anywhere within city limits if you go by yourself. You could also try to join a camp or registered Theme Camp.
Do you actually camp out on the Playa?
Yes. There's a couple of survival guides out there. I suggest you read 'em because these are hard conditions
Just what is the Playa?
Its the hard and dried up river or lake bed of what used to be Lake Black Rock (I think, correct me if I'm wrong here)
Can you drive onto the Playa?
If you have an art-car or if you're driving to your campsite.
What do you bring with you for the whole week?
Again, survival guides.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thank you all!
Thank you! Now I gotta run for my train :)

smatejov, here's some short and sweet for ya:

TICKETS: Buy them as soon as you can. What do they entitle you to do? Hmmm, good question. What does life entitle you to do?...
WHERE TO STAY: That looks like a good spot, and oh! That spot over there, too...
CAMP/PLAYA: Yes, you camp on the playa...
PLAYA: Spainish for "beach". It is an immensily large alkali dust flat.
DRIVE/PLAYA: Yes, you can drive on the playa,UNTIL you essentially park and that is also where your camp is...
SUPPLIES: You + 1 week worth water + 1 week worth of food + 1 week worth medication/fun stuff/ misc. x how many others go with you.
Did that help any? If not, read the BM Survival guide and read this forum!

actually, the Lake was named Lake Lahontan, in honor of explorer Baron de Lahontan, by geologist Clarence King who mapped the region in 1867.

The 'Black Rock' part refers to a big, um....black rock that sits at the Northern end of the section of The Black Rock Desert that we use for Burning Man.

~according to "The Black Rock Desert" by Sessions S. Wheeler.

i'm a bit of a fan of the history of the area...

It's importart to note that while you can camp MANY places in Black Rock City there are also designated theme camp areas, many of which require pre-registration or approval or at least their permission/invitation. These areas and camps will be clearly indicated on the map that you'll be given at the gate although I suggest that you keep attuned to what's going on here on the site. Major camps will be listed under the appropriate heading, sometime this Summer. In fact, as a Newbie it might be to your advantage to connect with a pre-existing camp. I did, and was glad I did. Drop a line to someone in a camp that strikes your fancy.

We are repeating ourselves. Hop over to http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=4488

and read it over. If you come up with questions that are not there ask them there and we can build a better FAQ.

Just an idea anyway.

It would be really nice to have a better way for people to go over this past info...
