Website Turns Away People!

Post by SoundMan » Fri Feb 03, 2006 7:24 am

Dudes,
Went to the megapixel website to check it out and immediately left when asked to register. Why? The none protected part of the website doesn't give much of a clue about what the project is about. So, why would I register, with a bunch of contact information, when I don't have any idea that this is something I want to be involved with? Please, please fix the website pronto to ENCOURAGE folks to get involved, not TURN them (me) away.

Thanks for the feedback. Let me look into that, it should be allowing everyone to browse without becoming a member.
It's going to be alright.

OK, I went and checked. The only link that asks for registration is the "Get Involved" link. The other three are open. I know I need to make the project info portion better somehow. What would have helped you there? Should those links be switched in position?
It's going to be alright.

If this Q and A were in the place of the project info page, would that help?

Project Megapixels FAQ

Q: What is this?
A: We want to create a very large image on the floor of the desert that will be photographed by a satellite

Q: How will you do this?
A: We need your help. We need lots of people to agree to bring some of the image.

Q: If I want to bring some of the image, what do I do?
A: Signup on the web site and tell us how many pixels you can bring.

Q: What’s a pixel?
A: For this project a pixel is a piece of fabric 44 inches square.

Q: Are we going to paint this?
A: No, in June we’ll email you and tell you how much and what color fabric to buy. We’ll also send instructions that tell you how to assemble your part of the image.

Q: What happens on the playa?
A: You’ll bring your part of the image out to the project location and help fasten it into place.

Q: Do I get my material back?
A: If you want it back you’re welcome to take it, or any other material when the project is through. We’ll burn all the burnables at the end otherwise.
It's going to be alright.

Thanks for the feedback.

What would you like to see/know/have on the web site to ENCOURAGE folks to get involved?

Again thanks for the feedback. We need peoples feed back.
Thats how we make Project Megapixels work.

sput just make the Q&A part of the project info page.
And on the "Get Involved" link give more info on the page before you register.
Pix count, number of registered users, ect.

Mozy,

I may save part of that for Jim, becuase I'm not sure I can do it without looking at the code for a bit. I can certainly put the Q&A part in pretty soon.
It's going to be alright.

I can't write code but let me know if you need any graphics. I can pull some of the submitted pixs down into the test pattern grid to see what they would look like in the desert. Off today call if you like.

I'll get on top of some of these suggestions as soon as I can.

I can add the FAQ questions to the project info page, but I'm not the best with layout. If someone does a mock up it is easy for me to mimic, or, sputnik could just edit it and tell me and I'll make sure to incorporate it into the code base. I will try to add pixel count and registered user count to the front page.

Should the FAQ and the About info be on separate pages? If so we might want separate links off of the main image... Dunno if we would need that tho...

The website is done in PHP and uses CSS for layouts. So the best help I could use would be someone who is good with CSS layouts and knows PHP.

I finished this part. Just updated the about.php file.

OK, it looks like it is just one link.

I clicked on what I thought was the most innocent link and got the register now experience. I see the other links have other experiences. I might suggest separating the FEAR and Project Info imagery/links, because I focused on the FEAR and visually didn't register the smaller typefaced Project Info.

so would you like to see more info under the "Get Involved" link? More on how to Get Involved and then a link on that page with a fair warrning "register now/login" button. And have the hope and fear buttons change to say post your pic/Project Info when you move the mouse over them.

Take a look at this:
http://www.spaceimaging.com/gallery/iow ... /index.htm

"Space Imaging's IKONOS satellite took this high-resolution color image of the Burning Man community September 3, 2005."
