Just curious………

I wonder what Joel thinks about what I just posted about the solider that got shot, being the patriot that Joel is?

Also, I'm curious about what Joel or anyone thinks about what Bush had to say last night about those around the world that have nuclear or have the desire or want to create nuclear weapons as opposed to America having nuclear weapons, now that the world knows that WMD's were never found in Iraq?

Hopefully this will put the political thread back on course.

The cop that shot the soldier should never work in any facet of LE again, anywhere in the United States. And he needs to sit in jail and not in a protective isolation cell but be put in the general population. And yes I know what that means for a cop behind bars.

As for the nuclear debate I didn't freak out too much over India and Pakistan having nukes. BFD, we knew it was coming and they'll blow each other up before bothering anyone else. Now if it's Iran with nukes or crackpot Kim with some those are entirely different matters. With Iran...they are IMHO the single biggest threat to world security at the moment. The idea of a crazy fundie ayatollah having the ability to press a button and wipe out half of Europe is not something I feel should be tolerated and therefore they need to have that ability wiped out.

As for Kim...that's a true wild card that if there's any way possible to take him out it needs to be done...and in any way, shape, form, violation of international law, whatever...it simply needs to be done.

So, if the soldier that was shot had died, should the cop get the death penalty? (Sorry, but this does relate to both threads).

Violence breeds bullies. Because the cop had the bigger stick at the time, does he have power until we, as a society, also engage in violence and become the bigger bully?

As a result of the absolute power we inherited at the end of the cold war, have we now become the bully of the world?

Thanks for your consideration K, I do expect some flack from those with differing opinions. It is true that the time I spend in silent protest is not as impressive, or even as effective as a bullet to the head, or a lethal injection. I can only hope there will be a renewal of nonviolent dreams in this country that reaches from the streets to the White House.

I don't think the cop should get the death penalty because it was the residents of that city that put the gun in the cops hand. They hired him to protect them to the best of his ability using his best judgement. He may have over time developed poor judgement and should be relieved of duty but he was hired and trained to do the job. His abilities should be evaluated somewhere along the way. Did it happen? Did he just snap or was he just doing his job?

I don't condone the shooting but were any of us there. No. So at this moment it is premature to judge him. Yeah, sure there is the video tape but was it original? Was the video tape edited? Anyone here know for sure?

BTW - About WWIII, I personally am very uncomfortable with collateral damage.

Hasyim Muzadi of the Nahdatul Ulama in Indonesia comes to mind. He's not a "world leader" but he oversees the NU which because of it's humanitarian efforts among other things has a lot of power.
