so, i had this thing where i was going to write about people being honest with you, and how if they're not that's a reflection on how you value honesty in your life, but it ended up not coming together.
if nothing else, though, not encouraging honest opinions of yourself from people you know and respect makes it difficult to maintain an accurate self image.
there's a clue there, somewhere. really there is.

being a slut is great. i'm all in favor of people getting as much sex as they can. if you're hot, and lot's of people wanna have sex with you, more power to you. hell, i wish i was hot so lots of people would wanna have sex with me.
the flip side of that, though, is that having sex with a slut doesn't make you hot stuff. really, it doesn't.

Oh yes it did! For those few brief minutes, I really was hot. OK, maybe it wasn't a full minute that first go-'round, but after a brief rest once again I had yet another glorious if too-brief moment of glory in the sun.III wrote:having sex with a slut doesn't make you hot stuff. really, it doesn't.
But yeah, by the next morning I was right back to my normal non-hot self.
Wouldn't trade the memories for anything.

True, but I would add that sincere compassion does much to diffuse the pain of the truly hurting. Ignoring them is easy, but in the end, it simply makes one an ass. Wisdom to see the difference, and having the courage to act on it in either case is the lesson. But oh the agony and stress I've sloughed away from my clenching teeth and swollen, irritated sternum as I realized that yes, indeed, this problem I do not take home. Taking it home does nothing for me, does not solve the other person's problem, and does nothing to add one quality moment to the life of any party concerned.
Oh - and please, people, I know San Francisco (I'm sure this goes for all cities with lots of tourists) is a lovely city, but it is not Disneyland's Frisco Adventure Theme Park, so next time you're here, please do obey all traffic laws as you would in your own home town, and do not discuss what your next destination will be, as you indulge your interest in amature cartography while all six of you stand stock still right on the little square of sidewalk that becomes the actual crosswalk.
Those of us who make your stay possible would appreciate the oportunity to continue on our way.

I don't think sincere compassion is ever wasted. Even if my compassion can't help "the professional victim," it helps me to avoid resentment and bitterness toward that person. Exercising compassion can be as much a boon to the person who gives it as to the one who receives.
It's not that I hate you. It's just that I'm a much better person than you.

Well spoken. It's not all about making the victim feel better, it's also about learning from that person the troubles that we all go through, and reminding ourselves of the times when someone reached out to us and offerred us compassion, and exercising that part of the psyche so that when someone who really can use your help asks for it, you are there and ready to use it.Patience wrote:I don't think sincere compassion is ever wasted. Remember the abuser was usually abused themselves. Breaking the cycle is the thing to focus on.

i'm not sure whether it's that i've had plenty little of that in my life, or only that i've found that compassion, on it's own, doesn't make much of a difference in how i live my life.
some of my most important life changes have been because of assholes (even if it was just me swearing to never be like them). then again, some of the most compassionate people i know are the ones who refused to put up with my self absorbed shit.
the clue from this: sometimes compassion hurts.

I understand compassion to mean the understanding of another's suffering, coupled with the desire to relieve it.
That doesn't mean you try to save or fix everyone. Just that you try to understand why they hurt, and wish for them relief from their pain. Most often people have to help themselves. All anyone else can usually do to help is cut them a little slack and maybe throw a little encouragement their way.

I can't help but notice that more than once it's been mentioned how annoying it is when people stop right in the middle of a traffic path. At first I wondered why God didn't put eyes on the backs of our heads, then I realized that would make it harder to whack them in the back of the head. So obviously God wants you to whack people in the back of the head when they block a trafficway. Feel free to use this explanation to the next person you whack in the back of the head!
I said something like this elsewhere but it should really go here.

You don't need to make a new vanity thread for you and your adoring fans every day. Just make the one and shamelessly bump it every hour or two. This way, the rest of us only need to check that one new thread in order to know it can be ignored. Thanks for your help.
