Any interest in a curry restaurant/pizzaria?

Post by Cephlah » Wed Feb 08, 2006 2:00 am

Last year was my first burn, and this year I would like to be more participatory.

My husband and I were talking about setting up a playa restaurant serving various vegetarian curries (Thai, Indian, etc), as well as pizza and juices or teas. We have no idea about the logistics of getting this together, or even if the two of us COULD put something like this together all by ourselves.

Questions of feasability aside, please let me know if you think it's a good idea. Also, if any theme camp would like to include our little restaurant, that might work out well for everyone.

Cepalah,

The BM web page that's linked to 'Organizing a Communal Kitchen' has a lot of good information. However, keep in mind that there is and has been a distinction between a kitchen set up to feed mebers of a camp vs food distribution to all comers. Please keep in mind that an unfortunate fact of life on the playa is that members of state and local health departments have been on the playa for the last few years to monitor such set up as the one your post seems to propose. I write this because I don't really see it so much as a feasability issue as it is a practical matter to consider before you start planning. Sorry, I can't help you with contact info for such things.

What Scotto and Iso said.... You might want to start off with just serving beverages and see how that goes (the health dept. is generally less concerned about beverages, at least I've never really had a problem).

You should also consider rehearsing the following phrase:

"Are you in my camp?" <nod head yes>

wow, no kidding. Thanks for the info...I had no idea things were so regulated.

I guess I understand needing some regulation on what food is served (so that no one is poisoning burners), but I am disappointed, because I really thought a restaurant would be a nice thing I could contribute. I will have to research this further.

*sigh* and it's good curry too. :(

I don't suppose that you can get by on the "But, but curry has all those spices in there to kill off the bugs" arguement.

Too bad

I like curry.

That's why I figured on making the curries vegetarian. Aside from the fact that they're good that way, no meat = no spoilage. All the other ingredients are either dry or canned/bottled.

Yes, I love curry too (obviously). Last year I was a friendless and lonely BM virgin, and I invited random burners to my camp for curry. Made a few friends that way and I thought it would be fun to make more (curry and friends) this year.

Crypto, track me down, and I will sneak you some curry. Just don't tell the health dept! *LOL*

Uh, vegetarian dishes can carry just as much bacteria and other bugs as meat-laden dishes. Really. Meatless does not equal no spoilage, why do you think canning fruits and veggies requires high temps? Botulism, that's why. Are you thinking of salmonella? Then, well, yeah, there's less chance of salmonella with no meat.

I'm sure you're clean and responsible, just challenging a blanket statement I know is untrue.

I love curry, but rarely can have it because of the potatoes. Kaire-raisu, now that's something I really miss.

Hushville's playacakes used to be out on the street, now they're inside the Town Round just because the Health Department shut them down one year. Wonderful vegan pancakes!

You're right, and yes, I do know veggies can spoil. I didn't include all the food prep details because it seemed like a moot point to me since I can't do the restaurant.

Thinking about some of my other posts on this board, I do seem to have a problem with making blanket statements. I need to break this habit! *LOL*

If you have your heart set on it, something you might be able to do is have curry cooking classes, make it a little more interactive and get yourself a few more folks to help chop the veggies while you're at it...

The White Dragon Noodle Shop (?name?) was right up the street from us and they had a permit to serve the public. Good soba, even if there was a line. They were only open a few hours each evening so as not to become slaves to their kitchen. I don't have their contact info, but I bet it could be dug up.

Or you could find a larger camp to blend into and then you'd be serving curry to your bigger camp, plus any camp visitors.

Don't mind me, I nit-pick. Don't get me started on apostrophes, they're my pet peeve, right along with the heavily misused "impact." See? Nit-picky.

Good idea Pikey - hosting "classes" could be fun :)

But what exactly is the impact of a mis'used apostrophe'? Just kiddin'.

Look, Curry is good (it saved my marrage a good many times) but I am interested in the pizza! I say do it anyways, screw the health people and what's the worst that could happen, so three days into it we ( i'm willing to be in on your camp) get shut down and have to reinvent ourselves as serving our own "Camp"
It takes many nails to build a crib, but only one screw to fill it.

Or, it could just be a requirement that anyone wanting to partake of the curry must spend the night. That could make for a very interactive camp!

So for pizzas then, would you like the Botulism Basic, or the Salmonella Special?

...I'm just feeling so witty today...

Sooo....what has become of the idea?????

Post by gyro » Tue Jun 27, 2006 8:50 pm

I'm a newby here so I may be missing vital information, and sadly, I am also logged on 5 months later than the last post I could find......

What is happening with the curry? I would so go for a curry on the playa, but because I will be traveling from a long way away, I will likely be sorely lacking in cooking ability......

So a curry class would be awesome.....volunteer galley slave guy?

Cheers,

I don't know about the curry (even if I'd love to find some in BRC) but each year I've bumped into someone giving out food to all comers and been very thankful for the gift. Be it hot dogs on the deep playa, fried potatoes and scrambled eggs from the christians, or even strips of dried deer. Yummy!

Sadly, the minor gods of capitalism demand that no curry shall come to the playa from my hands....in other words, I couldn't get the time off of work, so I won't be able to burn this year.

I will make curry at home and think of you fondly....

...until 2007 then

By the way, a curry-making CLASS would be an excellent idea, and maybe one to pursue for 2007.

Does anyone know if the health dept. rules apply to burners making their own food from supplied raw or frozen ingredients?

Funny you should ask- I just received the official themecamp health department rules today on just this subject. Both quotes are from this announcement.
If you are providing beverages and/or food for your camp and friends
no health permit is needed.
PUBLIC kitchens of any sort need a permit.
and
If you are giving food to the public you need a permit. Your CAMP
MATES and FRIENDS are the only people you can give food to without
health department clearance. If you have any questions please contact
us at [email protected].
Remember to direct questions to the theme camp people, not me. I eat Trader Joes burritos most of the week- and I actually like them.
