Are you talking about burners in general, or the organizers of the
LA Official Decompression? 'Cuz since seeing the website
(http://www.la-burningman.com/) i've been assuming that Twan
(LA's Regional Contact) is planning on signing Larry's contract.

Bob just had to mention fleet week. I'm going to miss the SF decompression and I'm missing fleet week. That bites. But that pic of the Blue Angels with the bridge in the background is gorgeous.

I have a dumb off topic question....will they let people walk or ride bikes across the GGB when the carrier battle groups are passing under it? I might be out there for it next year and was wondering if they will let you do it or not?

On the way up to Marin, watched the Blue Angels' practice runs from the tourist pullout at the north end of the bridge Thursday. Glad they're on our side.

Not aware of any closures since last year. Anywhere along the SF shore from Baker Beach to the Bay Bridge anchorage, and in Marin from Pt Bonita to the cove at Ft Baker is all good. From where I was watching, they were shooting over just high enough to paint the ridgetop along 101 and return above the Gate bridge deck. I don't think they underfly the Gate bridge, but I saw a pair shoot above and below the Bay Bridge. AFAIK both bridges have about the same clearance to high tide.

The LA burner scene is what you guys are saying and more. I still enjoy showing up once in a while, but now am looking at it from a slightly more estranged place( living an hour away). I'm finding that it does seem kind of elitist, and cooler-than-thou as opposed to say the San Francisco scene, where in my brief visits there I've encountered all kinds of friendly geeks who arent at all the "industry types."

Recently a bunch of LA freaks/burners were invited to entertain the cirque du soleil party guests. While I had an amazing time doing this, I realized that I only was offered the oppurtunity because I temporarily belonged to the hipster club through my acquaintances. I still love this culture in the city but I'm getting more critical of it these days because I'm not into being one of the "cool kids" just because I never was in my real life.

There seems to be a correlation between how much someone performs or is engrossed in the lifestyle and how much their ego is inflamed. I don't have to name names but this is quite aparent. Yikes, in dating people from this scene I've seen this in the most ugly way. Humans arent Gods of the cool.

There's a lot of Bullshit out there and I'm definitely waking up to it, which takes it toll on me at times.

Now I'm taking a little break for introspection and stepping away from hooping for the time being to be academic, but Ivy I see where you're coming from. There should be more people of your character around here more often indeed.

You actually saw them fly under the Bay Bridge? I thought you could lose your wings for that! Too bad somebody didn't have a camera right then, it would have made for an awesome pic. And I know the pilots that went under the bridge had a smile they won't lose for weeks. That is so cool.

And that Marin pullout is one of my all time favorite places to be. I ended up falling asleep there after BM and woke up to the sound of the foghorn and one of the most incredible views I've ever seen.

I wish they had an easier way to cross from one side of the bridge to the other with a bike on the North side...those steps are kinda steep.

Can't you create your own version of a LA burner scene?

It seems to me that if everyone who hates their scene made more of an
effort to get other burners together (bbqs, camping trips, days out on the
town, workshops, classes, dinners, dancing, book clubs, art exhibits,
discussion groups, work parties, etc. ) they would probably get great
response from the community.

I know some LA burners in the "industry", but most folks i've met aren't.
It may just be that the industry people and their scene seem more
noticable 'cuz they are use to promoting themselves that way. But
blaming the industry for ruining your scene seems a little unfair. You
create your own reality and control your own social life.

For your heartfelt suggestions Girlie but I didn't say I "hated the scene". Obviously I still find much of it enjoyable and attend things.

Obviously you misunderstood what I was trying to do, which was to point out a few things that I was noticing recently that I don't like. I don't have to have to have a cult-ish blinded love for every aspect of burner culture in order to enjoy most of it. I just happen to agree with some of the things that Ivy had remarked about in her earlier posts. This is still my favorite social scene and that should be aparent since I just saw you last night at the abundant sugar thing.

And thanks for your lovely suggestion of planning my own things, because I already am an active part in building community.

I know I'm late to the thread, but I've always looked at the cheaper-in-fancy-schmancy-dress thing as more like a thank-you discount to the folks who took the trouble to transform themselves into something not normal, thus adding to the ambiance of the event in question. Outright punitive price differences like 30.00 street clothes/15.00 costumed (which I've seen at some events where costumes, etc. are encouraged - not BM-related), is not fair, but a discount given to people who took a little time to dress up is okay.

Actually i was being lazy and quoting you when i really meant to write an
open response to the folks who do hate or dislike the scene here.
Sorry 'bout that.

I think detailing the problems with the LA burner community is worthwhile,
but i think it is even cooler when action is then taken to remedy those
problems.

I am currently gathering a bunch of info related to this. Am I the person to take this on? Well, I have some shortcomings; shy, socially un-assertive, hate people I don't know, lacking in 'star power', tending toward slack. The first stage is to test the waters with other local folks. This is going well in this thread and some PM conversations. The second stage is actual FTF encounters. This has been slowed by my SARS recovery. I am still looking for reasons to go to decom but I am not yet swayed. I think a nova thingie sounds more like it. The third stage would be, after carefull assessment I guess, trying to create lasting bonds and working on group projects.

I think you'll do just fine! Actually, in my experience creating social
events, etc. is rarely a one person job. But if *everyone* interested in
building community started actively trying to get people together you'll
really start to see things happening. I think bringing together a
community is a group task, not something one person should be expected
to do on their own.

To get started you can use the la-burningman list to announce get-togethers,
as well as your personal address lists, the ePlaya and word-of-mouth.
I agree that gatherings in the style of the Nova Cafe thing are a good
place to start.

I'm going to go, but i am going for the people, not the event, if that
makes any sense. It is always fun meeting other burners. I am also
fairly shy and strangers sometimes make me very uncomfortable (in that
not-so-fun hyperventilating sort of way) but my goal for the LA Decom
thing is to talk to a least a handful of people i've never met before.

Maybe we could have a mini ePlaya meet-n-greet during the Decom
event, to try to make the whole thing a little more people-oriented then
party-oriented.

I am totally with you about taking things into one's own hands. I think that's what we are starting to do here--only we are starting at the very scratch of it all, as most of us have never even met yet. I didn't mean to sound all bitchy and "talk the talk but not walk the walk" 9although I do admit to a deal of ranting, mainly to get it out of my system).

I think a mini meet & greet is an awesome idea. I've been to the BB before but i have no idea how they're layiing out the faire; if I were guessing I'd say our best bet would just be to meet out front of the Blue Bongo, unless anyone has a big flashy sculpture or something else easily identifiable. I don't know what time I'll be there yet, how about you guys?

Two totally unrelated side notes:
1. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Twan's list (the LA BM announce list). However, I am recently frustrated with the lack of appearance lately of all the events I have sent in.

2. Girlie--back to the original topic of $5 costume vs. $10 street clothes--I am curious to your opinion about other discounted entrance fees, like girls get in free, stuff like that.

Blah Blah... At least you only had to pay $5 and $10 it cost twice as much up here, Dammit. I just strolled on in and payed $10, just look like you are supposed to be there, I was all like "hi Crimson" on the way everybody asked me if I was going to "the burning man party" apparently I looked the part enough. I don't see what is wrong with giving people a discount if they are in costume, it enhanses the atmosphere. There really arent enough opportunities to wear crazy stuff, if you ask me. I dont get why it is a problem. HEll thats how the kids got into Studio 54.

I was wondering if I looked "Playa" enough for the discount, and then the weird old bitch from my neighborhood gave me the evil eye, so I knew I would be ok. She wears a baggy purple sweatshirt and a red hat like the stupid poem every damn day and never smiles back when I smile at her. So here she is in her red hat and purple sweatshirt looking totaly weird herself and she gives me the evil eye for my tame by playa standards seqined star belly shirt with cammo raver pants and spiked belt topped off with a star hat, (gift) studded pink vinil choker and orange bandana (see "gifts" the anti downer thread" for the bandana story) At least I looked GOOD! Goggles are sexy.
