The history of the theme camps

Post by nogganoodle » Wed Feb 15, 2006 12:49 pm

I'm a veteran of many festivals over here in good old Blighty but have never heard of the Theme Camps being done over here. I am fascinated by where the idea sprung up from, how the rivalries between camps come about (eg Apokiliptika vs Herring) and all thing camp. Enlighten me please

I don't know the history, but the Apokoliptika/Herring thing isn't real as far as I know. I suspect the Herring camp is a joke. Maybe I'm wrong. We'll see this summer.
It's going to be alright.

Peter Doty creates the first theme camp by dressing as Santa, giving away free fruitcake and eggnog at "Christmas Camp."

Ahhh... days of Santacon. Tears are again forming...

We do have a history - not as long as some, but a notable one, nonetheless. And we seem to bebreaking new ground as we go along. After all, what other Kamp can claim to have started a global thermonuclear war? >grins<

About the Herring-Apokilipse War? They say they will be here. We hope so - would be fun to have formidable enemy to trounce and assimilate.

I was never convinced that it was a Real camp/ war but it's always good for a giggle. But then again is war meant to be a joke? Not when fish are involved it's not

Camp Herring is going to be a real camp connected to the Black Rock International Burner Hostel (BRIBH).
BRIBH will contain several theme camps this year including Camp Herring.
Camp Herring has chosen this solution for to be connected to an infrastructure.
This is because it’s limited what will fit in our suitcases when traveling from Norway.
Just imagine if you were to travel to Norway setting up a theme camp in just two days.
However we are getting help from a guy in Reno using his address for shipping things we buy online.
That way we have lots of stuff stored in his garage when we arrive in Reno saving us time.

Cool, I have always been amused by the Herring/Apok war. Are you recruiting members? I just have one problem, I don't like fish...

Yes we are recruiting members!
You don’t have to like eating fish as long as you are good at throwing them. : )

i thought i read somewhere (maybe This is Burning Man) that Doherty actually gives first theme camp credit to a woman who set up 'Elegance Camp' the year before he did Christmas camp...? She used table linens, china & silver, candles, and dressed up in a white shirt, black jodpurs and shiny black boots. Stayed impeccably clean the whole time. Later admitted to having several sets of the outfit, carrying a rag to wipe off the boots constantly, and showering several times a day to keep up the image.

witchy and i are actually planning a bit of a tribute to her this year...at least in dress & homestead decor.
